Bessie Sligh Stump

Bessie Sligh Stump, 74, of Appomattox, died Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Eldridge Dewey Stump, Sr. Born July 23, 1932 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Sligh and Mary Tyree “Frances” Sligh Layne; also preceding her in death were a son, Eldridge D. Stump, Jr. a daughter, Shirley Coles Hawkins, a sister, Woodsie Sligh, and two brothers, Robert and J.C. Sligh. Mrs. Stump retired from Wilburn’s Super Market in Appomattox and was a member of the Baptist Faith. She is survived by her daughters, Janet S. Doss and her husband Douglas of Appomattox, and Kathy S. Treaster and her husband Gary of Chesterfield; a brother, J. Esley Sligh of Seminole, FL; three sisters, Lois Reeves of Appomattox, Barbara Shaffer of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Mary L. Moore of Evington; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two expectant great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 6, 2006 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the Rev. Robert " Dink" Phillips. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park, Forest. Visitation for family and friends will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at her daughter Janet's home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. The family would like to send special thanks to Dr. Guthrow, Dr. Vandyke, and the staff of Lynchburg General Hospital for their excellent care and to her extended family at Babcock Manor.

Melvin Edward "Pete" Laughlin

Melvin Edward "Pete" Laughlin, 68, of Pisgah Road Goode, died Friday, March 17, 2006 at his homeplace. He was the husband of Shirley Johnson Laughlin.

Born in Bedford County, May 7, 1937 he was a son of the late Vivian Edward Laughlin and Nora Lucy Goodman Laughlin. He was a retired brick mason and was a member of Rock Pike Baptist Church. Pete also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Vickie Laughlin Smith and her husband Russell of Bedford; one son, Vivian Edward "Pete" Laughlin of Goode; three sisters, Nellie Breeden and her husband Russell of Rustburg, Martha Hatter of Goode and Diana Baldwin and her husband Fred of Lowry; four brothers, Lawson Laughlin and Haden Laughlin and his wife Angila all of Forest, Clifton Laughlin and his wife Svetlana and Leland Dobyns and his wife Donna all of Goode; three grandsons, Timothy G. Laughlin, Terry E. Laughlin and Jeremy D. Bennett; two great grandsons, Tylee Laughlin and Cody Bennett and a number of nieces and nephews including a very special niece, Sueanna Keesee who was always there for Pete.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Pisgah Presbyterian Church by Pastor Ray Lyons. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the home of his niece, Sueanna Keesee.

Frankie Allen Powell

Frankie Allen Powell, 57, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born October 6, 1948, in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Erskin M. Cottrell and Essie Tomlin Cottrell. Mr. Powell was the former owner of Rainbow Intl. Carpet Dying and Cleaning Co. for over 12 years.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gary and Pete Powell and two sisters, Jewel May Paulette and June Green and her husband, “Bud”.

Survivors include two daughters, Becky P. Moore and fiancé, Danny Grizzard of Lynchburg and Wendy Murphy and her husband, Mark, of Madison Heights; Mr. Powell’s fiancé, Margaret Franklin, of Madison Heights and her children, Crystal, Darrell and Dawn Franklin; three brothers, Pastor Bill Evans and wife, Judy, George Evans, and wife, Sonya and Danny Ray Powell; four sisters, Frieda Norton and husband Dave, Latricia Hall and husband, Gary, Brenda Martin and husband, Clayton and Debbie Knowles and husband, Anthony; sister-in-law, Della Powell, brother-in-law, Wayne Paulette; five grandchildren, Thomas Moore, Derrick Verdinella, Michael Brooks, Miranda Murphy and Bryson Murphy, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Pastor Bill Evans and the Rev. Donald Stine. Interment will take place in Meade cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 154 Maple Lawn Place in Madison Heights.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the family in care of Wendy Murphy, P.O. Box 1236 Madison Heights, 24572.

Totsie Ring Emmerson

Totsie Ring Emmerson, 84, of Madison Heights died Monday, February 06, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Derrel E. Emmerson.

Born in Fries, VA, August 25, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Martin E. and Mary Morgan Ring. She was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.

One son, Calvert “Jimmy” Johnson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Johnson Jones and her husband Robert of Evington and Kim E. Mays and her husband Brian of Madison Heights; three sons, Arthur Edward Burch, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Roanoke, Terry Wayne Burch and his wife Betty of Forest and Timothy E. Emmerson and his wife Debra of Madison Heights; one sister, Ruby Ring Davis of Lynchburg; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday from Whitten Monelison Chapel with Dr. Timothy Madison officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her daughter Kim.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Monelison Rescue Squad.

Harold Franklin Pillow

Harold Franklin Pillow, 84, of Madison Heights, passed way Tuesday, March 20, 2006 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. Mr. Pillow was preceded in death by his first wife, Mable Mathews Pillow and his second wife, Martha Bryant Pillow.

Born September 16, 1921, in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Walton H. Pillow and Lillie Lee Pillow.

Mr. Pillow was a United States Army veteran having served in WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post 16. He was in the bakery business for over 30 years and was retired from the Merchandising Co. Mr. Pillow was a member of Park View United Methodist Church.

He was also preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

A daughter, Frankie V. Pillow, of Madison Heights, survives him.

A graveside service with full military honors by American Legion Post 16, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, by the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider Park View United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.

E. Ernest Burch, Jr.

E. Ernest Burch, Jr., 87, of Winesap Rd. in Madison Heights, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Helen Roach Burch for 65 years.

Born March 1, 1919, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Emmett E. Burch, Sr. and Eva Page Burch. Mr. Burch was a United States Navy veteran having served in the Pacific during WWII.

He was retired Chief of Police at the Central Virginia Training Center for over 20 years. Both residents and employees remember him as a man with great leadership and humanity. He was Elder Emeritus and charter member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where he served actively as elder and Sunday School teacher for more than 30 years.

Mr. Burch was a member of the Virginia Association of the Chief’s of Police, Gideon’s International, Elon Ruritan Club, and a member and past commander of American Legion Post 100.

In his leisure time and during retirement, Ernest enjoyed traveling and took many trips with his wife, Helen. They traveled across the country, visited his brother in Arizona, and took many trips to the beach and to see their daughter in Maryland. They also took trips to Canada and Mexico with the family. He was a wonderful husband and caring father. His sense of humor was a source of joy to his family and friends. He loved to cook and experiment with new kinds of dishes. He had a large garden in retirement and enjoyed working in the garden with his wife and canning the fruits of their labor. He loved to play games with his family and enjoyed the many dogs and cats he had over the years. He and his wife spent many wonderful times on their porch in the nice weather enjoying their time together and their time with family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill” Burch.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Jean Kitts and husband, James, of Madison Heights and Becky Burch, of Prospect, KY and former husband, Joe King, of Louisville, KY, who remains a close family friend. He loved and was loved by his two grandchildren, Cathy Baldwin and husband, Steven, of Lynchburg and Ali Burch, of Prospect, KY. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Maddy and Daniel Baldwin; two sisters, Marilyn Harris and husband, Fred and Lois Cutshall and husband, Shelby, both of Madison Heights; a brother, Edward Burch and wife, Addie, of Lynchburg, many treasured nieces, nephews, many other relatives and wonderful friends he touched throughout his life.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2006 at Northminster Presbyterian Church by Dr. Wayne Meredith, the Rev. Barry Tucker and the Rev. Charles Sutton. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park with full military honors by American Legion Post 16 in Lynchburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3-5:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

James Coleman “Pete” Wood

James Coleman “Pete” Wood, 82 of Monroe, passed away Monday, April 4, 2005 at the Virginia Medical Center in Salem.

Born April 6, 1922, in Snowden, he was a son of the late Harry Wood, Sr. and Julia Bowels Wood. Mr. Wood was a United States Army veteran having served in WWII and was retired from Bat Masonry in Lynchburg.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Hartbarger and Ida Dawson, three brothers, Harry Wood, William Wood and Leslie Wood.

Survivors include two sisters, Estelle Cheatham of Monroe and Mary Mitchell of New Market, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Denny Mitchell and the Rev. Bryan Ferrell. Interment will take place in Cheatham Family cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Estelle Cheatham, 234 Cheatham Rd.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider the Big Island Fire and Rescue squad or the Cornerstone Baptist Church building fund.

Mary Henson Staton

Mary Henson Staton, 94 of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at Avante of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Albert M. Staton.

Born April 24, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Dora Lawhorne Henson. Mrs. Staton was a member of the Madison Heights Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, Donald, Leonard and Sherman Staton, a grandson, Donald Scott Staton, four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include three children, Terry Staton and his wife, Merle of Bedford, Robbin “Bobby” Staton and his wife, Shirley of Madison Heights and Mary Stewart and her husband, Jimmy of Lynchburg, five grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Tim Madison. Interment will take place in Meade cemetery.

The family will receive friends from7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Robbin Staton, 155 Great Oaks Dr. in Madison Heights.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Madison Heights Baptist Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at Avante for the care and compassion given to Mrs. Staton.

Frank Reese Mays

Frank Reese Mays, 80, of Madison Heights, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at the Virginia Baptist Hospital after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary Pickral Mays for 58 years.

Born in Lynchburg on Aug. 13, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles Joseph Mays, Sr. and Goldie Stewart Mays. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles J. Mays, Jr.

Frank was a retired Electrical Engineer for Wiley & Wilson and a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater of Operations from 1943 to 1945. He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 called “War Horse”. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Presidential Citation, ETO ribbon with four Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the W.W.II Victory Medal. He was the author of “And No Purple Heart”, a book about his World War II adventures.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Terry Wayne Mays of Madison Heights; one daughter Sarah Ann Mays of Madison Heights; an aunt, Hilda Southall of Lynchburg and a special friend, L’Tonya Isabelle of Madison Heights.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3 P.M. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, from Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment will follow with military honors by American Legion Post 16 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Fremont Huffman Goodbar

Fremont Huffman Goodbar, 73, of Rustburg, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Carole Strong Goodbar.

Born February 9, 1932 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Pearlie Lloyd Goodbar and the late Eva Bane Morra. He served in the US Army and Army reserve for 33 years and was retired from the Lynchburg Foundry after 31 years.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Goodbar was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd "Bill" Goodbar.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: five children: Joyce G. Fisher and husband James of Lynchburg, Peter G. Goodbar and wife Sheila of Rustburg, Jeannie Torrents of Gladys, Hope Carroll of Madison Heights, and Cynthia Farrar and husband Rick of Rustburg; two step-children: Larry Clingempeel of Lynchburg and Petty Newton and husband Bobby of Madison Heights; two sisters: Anna Sensabaugh and husband Samuel and Audrey Ware and husband Marvin both of Lynchburg; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2005 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Ray Triplett. Interment, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16, will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 7 – 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association.
