Teddy Randall Caple Jr., 13 of 1214 Saint John Street, Richmond, Va., formerly of Petersburg, Va., passed away September 6, 2001 at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Robert Sykes and Robert Williams. Teddy attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., where he was baptized. He was a loving, joyful and strong young man. Never did he complain or cry. He was a former student at Virginia Avenue School in Petersburg, Va. Later he moved with his family to Richmond where he attended Albert Hill School until his declining health. He is survived by his devoted parents, Debra Sykes Caple and Teddy Randall Caple Sr. of Richmond, Va.; godfather, Lee Washington of Petersburg; four sisters, Theresa, Tamisha, Tabitha and Ameila Caple, all of Richmond, Va.; his grandparents, Alice Sykes of Petersburg, Va. and Jane Caple of Colonial Heights, Va.; uncles, Willie Lillie (Carolyn), Archie Love (Gerald) of Petersburg, Va., Darryl Sykes of Richmond, Va., Robert Sykes (Diana) of Chester, Va.; six aunts, Angela Williams (Barry) of Richmond, Natilie Caple of Colonial Heights, Va., Cynthia Rogers of North Carolina, Ramona Sykes of Richmond, Va., Janice Lewis (Anthony) of Ettrick, Va., and Amy Sykes of Maryland; seven great-aunts, Frances Sykes of Petersburg, Va., Marie Ware, Mattie Caple, Gracie Caple, Ruth Parham. Mary Brown and Lois Caple all of Stony Creek, Va.; great-uncles, Bernard Williams of New York, Peter Sykes, Rev. Joe Caple, all of Stony Creek, Va., Royal Caple of Washington, D.C., Charlie Caple, Dennis Caple and John Caple, all of Stony Creek; and a host of cousins and friends, among them are his devoted friends, Tonya Barnes, home teacher, Tyscaln Armstrong, James Richardson and Rev. Eric Jackson. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the James M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., with Rev. William Eric Jackson officiating and Rev. Joe Caple, eulogizing. Interment will be in the Caple Family Cemetery, Stony Creek, Va. The family will receive relatives and friends at 1214 Saint John Street, Richmond, Va. and at the home of his aunt and uncle, Janice and Anthony Lewis, 21231 Fox Maple Court, Ettrick, Va. CHANDLER
Donna Cecile Chandler, age 54, of Midlothian, died Thursday, September 6, 2001 at her residence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tade and Mary Chandler; one brother, Chris; and one grandchild, Matt. Survived by three children, Wendy, Michael, Mark; two sisters, Nikki and Lisa; seven grandchildren, Angel, Rusty, Corey, Ashley, Michael Jr., Preston and P.J. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday, September 10, 2001 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bon Secours Hospice or American Cancer Society. COTTOM
Albert Arnold Cottom, age 95, of Richmond, widower of Marion Grimes Cottom, died Friday, September 7, 2001. He was retired from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad where he was employed for 51 years, a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 14 and the Jahnke Road Baptist Church. He was a resident of the Masonic Home of Virginia for the past ten years. Survivors include his son Albert Arnold Cottom Jr.; niece, Carol Cottom Browder; nephew, Gordon W. Cottom; and a loving and devoted friend, Virginia Gammon. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Rd., with Masonic Memorial Rites to follow. Interment will be at a later date at Maury Cemetery.

CUSTALOW
Curtis L. Custalow Sr., 85, former Chief of the Mattaponi Indian Reservation, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 6, 2001 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. He was born to Solomon D. and Lillie B. Custalow. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Gertrude Minnie Ha-Ha Custalow; five children, Curtis L. Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, Marvin I. Sr. and his wife, Jackie, Veronica C. Reel and her husband, Billy, Denise C. Davis and Michael G. Sr. and his wife, Donna; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Chief Custalow was a charter member of the Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church and served as Sunday School Teacher and Senior Ordained Deacon. He served on the Steering Committee of the Native American Rights Fund for 13 years, as well as Native American Committee instituted by former Gov. Linwood Holton. Chief Custalow served in World War II, 17th Signal Corps, in the Normandy, Northern France and Germany Campaigns. He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the E.A.M.E. Campaign Medal, three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a Marksmanship Medal. Chief Custalow was a leader in his church and a leader for his people and will always be remembered for his contributions to both. We would like to express our thanks to the Mattaponi and West Point Volunteer Rescue Squads, McGuire Veterans Hospital, in-home nurses and caregivers and Walter Reed Hospital, with a special thanks to their ICU team. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 10, at 2 p.m. at the Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church, Mattaponi Indian Reservation. Remains rest at B.W. White Funeral Home, King William, where the family will receive friends and family 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9.

Willie "8 Ball" Dark of 3521 Florida Ave., entered eternal rest September 6, 2001. DUKE
Elizabeth Russell Duke, 87, of Woodford, died Friday, September 7, 2001. Survivors include a son, William A. Duke Jr. and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Tate Duke of Woodford; and grandchildren, Caitlin Duke and William Paul Duke. A funeral service will be held Monday, September 10, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Bowling Green. FRANKLIN
William Edward "Ed" Franklin, 83, of Richmond, formerly of Lancaster County, died September 6, 2001. Mr. Franklin was born in Henrico County and graduated from Westhampton High School. Early in his career he worked as a locomotive fireman for the R.F.&P. Railroad. He later became a bricklayer and brick foreman and was a lifelong member of Bricklayer's Local No. 1, where he later served as full time business agent and financial secretary from 1959 until his retirement in 1981. He served two terms and a member of the Virginia Employment Commission. Mr. Franklin was an active Mason, a member of ACCA Temple, Scottish Rite, Provost Guard and numerous Shrine Clubs, and was past master of the Lodge of Strict Observance No. 207 A.F.&A.M. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ where he served on the Church Council and was a past president of the Men's Club. During WWII, Mr. Franklin served in the Philippines as a 1st lieutenant in the Transportation Corps, 649th Port Company. He was a member of American Legion Post 125. Mr. Franklin was an accomplished golfer, hunter and fisherman. Mr. Franklin is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Lucille Bluethgen Franklin; his daughter, Ellen Franklin Lockard and her husband, Robert of Glen Allen, Va.; his sons, Edward Carlyle Franklin and his wife, Cynthia of Apex, N.C., Ronald Ernest Franklin and his wife, Dianne of Richmond, Va., Gregory William Franklin of Quinton, Va. and Lynwood Lee Franklin and his wife, Julie of Severna Park, Md. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, followed by a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, September 10, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 503 N. Lombardi St., Richmond. A graveside services follows at Washington Memorial Park in Sandston, Va. GIBSON
James Leonard Gibson Jr. of Varina, Va., age 76, died of cancer on Saturday, September 8, 2001. He was preceded in death by his father, James L. Gibson Sr.; his mother, Mae Jane Grigsby; his sister, Elizabeth Gibson Parker; and his brother, Robert N. Gibson. Jim was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy almost four years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was active in many service and community activities, having been a member of the Varina Lions Club for 36 years. For his humanitarian service to others, he was awarded the highest honor by the Lions Club International Foundation, by being designated a Melvin Jones Fellowship. Jim served as a member of Varina Beautification Committee for many years, the Virginia Tax Payers Association, the Advisory Board of the Elizabeth Crump Manor, Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the Traveler's Protective Agency. He was an active member of the St. John's Episcopal Church, serving as Junior then Senior Warden, president of it's Endowment Fund and Chairman of the Building and Grounds. He also served many years as an Usher. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lorene Shaw Gibson; their son, Benjamin C. Gibson and his wife, Sharon; a granddaughter, Kylie Michelle; and a sister-in-law, Fay B. Gibson. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Monday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at St. John's Episcopal Church, 12 Noon Tuesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Relay for Life, c/o Robin Yoder, Johnston-Willis Hospital, Hawthorne Hospice Care, Johnston-Willis Hospital or St. John's Episcopal Church Endowment Fund.

GLASS
Cecil Leroy Glass Sr. died September 6, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wives, Margaret W. Glass and Glady S. Glass; and one of his 13 children, Debbie Barnes. He is survived by his children, Linda Stiltz, Becky Almeida, Cecil Glass Jr., Luther Glass, Bonnie Mulligan, Ronnie Glass, Elsie Sylvester, Kenneth Glass, Tater Morgan, Kenneth Tyree, Bobby Tyree and Pam Tibbs; brother, Luther A. Glass; and sister, Alice Warman; 32 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends Sunday and Monday 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 11. Interment Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Deltaville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Dltaville, Va. 23043.

HANNAH
Robert M. Hannah, 74, of Richmond, a retired CPA, died Friday, September 7, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Cecelia H. Hannah; daughter, Anita Darnell and her husband, Danny; a brother, Frank R. Hannah Jr.; several nieces and nephews; and three special friends, Gene F. Lyon, and John and Betty Hoover. Mr. Hannah was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, with interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.

HAYMES
Mr. John Richard (Dick) Haymes, Jr., 78, of Richmond, Va., died September 7, 2001 at Windsor Nursing Home, Richmond. Born in Richmond on December 18, 1922, he was the son of Mr. John Richard Haymes Sr. and Mrs. Sara Dillard Haymes Penick. The family resided in South Boston, Va., during his youth. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted and served as a Navigator in the Army Air Corps. Mr. Haymes obtained a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia, an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School, his JD Degree from the TC Williams School of Law, a Masters degree in Law and Taxation from the Marshall Wythe School of Law, the College of William and Mary. He retired from the Richmond City Attorney's office in 1983 and continued in private law practice until July 2001. Mr. Haymes is survived by three sons, J. Richard Haymes III and wife, Julie of Concord, Calif., Joshua D. Haymes of Richmond, and B. Mason Haymes of Richmond; two grandsons, Ethan and Mason Haymes of Concord, Calif.; a sister, Martha Haymes Vaughan of Richmond; and two nieces, Marty Vaughan of Richmond, and Dillard Vaughan Philpott of Fredericksburg. He was enthusiastic about classic cars, natural sciences, running, biking, tennis and many other subjects. He had many friends and acquaintances of all ages and walks of life. Graveside services for Mr. Haymes will be held Monday, September 10, 3 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston with military Rites. The Rev. Dr. Russell Lee will officiate. A memorial service will be held on September 15, 2001 at 5 p.m. at the Virginia House, 4301 Sulgrave Rd., Richmond, Va. For memorials, please consider a charity of your choice. JENKINS
Thomas Wilson Jenkins Jr., 58, died at home on Friday, September 7, 2001 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Thomas W. Jenkins and Mintha Ann Weld Jenkins. He is survived by his wife, Susan Jester Jenkins; his two sons, Thomas Wilson Jenkins III and Robert Sterling Jenkins; and his sister, Barbara Warriner Roehrich. Mr. Jenkins was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Beacon Press, Inc. until his retirement in 1996. He served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Deer Hunters Association and was a member of Third Presbyterian Church and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 10, at Third Presbyterian Church, 600 Forest Ave. The Bliley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund for the Sanctuary, Third Presbyterian Church, 600 Forest Ave., 23229 or Hunters for the Hungry, P.O. Box 304, Big Island, Va. 24526.

JENNINGS
Elsie "Sister" R. Hendricks, age 89, widow of Earl A. Hendricks and George H. Jennings, departed this life on Friday, September 7, 2001. She is survived by her son, Norman Earl Hendricks Sr. and his wife, Martha; two stepdaughters, Shirley Jennings Baber and her husband, Jerry, and JoAnna Jennings Gammon and her husband, Russell; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 14th and Perry Sts. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.

JOHNSON
Oliver Francis "O.J. Sr." Johnson Sr., 66, of Richmond, died Thursday, September 6, 2001. He was the widower of Irene Johnson and survived by his son and daughter-in-law, O.J. Jr. and Susie; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Gwen and Gary Benton; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Jeffery, Brandon, Amber, Megan, Sara, Jamie and Kelly; two brothers, Jerry and Edward; two sisters, Anne and Mary; and three nephews, Steve, Joe and Dave Hollis. Mr. Johnson was a Korean War U.S. Army Veteran, owner of O.J. Sporting Goods, devout coach to Lakeside sports, member of Lakeside Optimist Club, and a well known employee of SunTrust Bank. His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park.

John Mitchell (Mitch) Jones Jr., of Midlothian, Va., departed this life Saturday, September 8, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

Robert J. "Bob" Jones Jr., 49, of Richmond, died suddenly September 6, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Minor-Jones; his children, Lindsey, Robbie and Heather; and his father, Robert Jones of Danville. The family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Services and interment will be private.
