CLAUDE N. WILLIAMS SR.
Claude N. Williams Sr., Neenah, Wis., passed away Sunday (Sept. 21, 2008).
He was born Dec. 13, 1921 in Arno, son of the late Willis Ray and Jessie (Calfee) Williams.
Claude served in the U.S. Army during WWII, being stationed in India, Burma and China.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the First Presbyterian Church and Chapel, with The Rev. Richard Moore officiating.
Visitation was held at the church from 3 p.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established for the Diabetes Foundation.

CRYSTAL NYCOLE DELANO
Crystal Nycole Delano, 25, of Nicklesville, passed away on Sunday (Sept.21, 2008).
She was born in Kingsport, Tenn. on Oct. 19, 1982.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Owens Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with The Rev. G.W. White officiating.
Interment will follow at the Breeding Family cemetery in Cleveland.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

TRINA ROSE ROLLINS
Trina Rose Rollins, 63, passed away Sunday (Sept 21, 2008) after a courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Appalachia, she had lived the past 40 years in Big Stone Gap.
Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is serving the Rollins Family.

KASEL ROBINETT WESTBROOK
Kasel Robinett Westbrook, 88, of Brooksville, Fla., formerly of Dade City, Fla., died Saturday (Jan. 10, 2009.)
Born in Oreton, she moved to Dade City 60 years ago from Big Stone Gap.
Arrangements by Merritt Funeral Home, 2 South Lemon Ave., Brooksville, Fla. 34601.

PHILLIP D. WILLIAMS, SR.
Phillip D. Williams, Sr., 62, of Bristol, passed away Monday (Jan. 12, 2009) at the VA Medical Center.
He was born in Jellico, Tenn., a son to the late Joe and Ruth Viola Arnett Williams.
He had been a resident of Bristol since 1979 and had formerly worked as a supervisor at Speed Clip.

RUTH L. SCALLAN
Ruth L. Scallan, 88, of Beaufort, N.C., formerly of Crystal River, Fla., died Thursday (Jan. 8, 2009) at home.
She was born in Big Stone Gap to the late Samuel and Berta Miner Lane.
The family received friends at Brooks Funeral Home Sunday, Jan. 11.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Brooks Funeral Home chapel, Morehead City, N.C. with The Rev. Ken Turner officiating.
The committal service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, at Magnolia cemetery, Lecanto, Fla.

Doris Christian Lawson
Doris Christian Lawson, 51, of Exeter, passed away Saturday (March 14, 2009) at Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport, Tenn.
She was of the Apostolic Faith.
She was an employee of Wal-Mart, Big Stone Gap, where she had many friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. John Fultz and The Rev. Robert Maggard officiating.
Burial followed in the American Legion cemetery.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

E.C. “Tate” Swiney
E.C. “Tate” Swiney, 76, of Big Stone Gap, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (March 17, 2009) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.
Family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with The Rev. Allan Williams officiating.
Committal services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Saturday to go in procession.

Lillian Beatrice Wilson
Lillian Beatrice Wilson, 82, of Exeter, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (March 17, 2009) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.
Family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.
Funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with The Rev. Jerry Belcher officiating.
Committal services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway.
Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Thelma Elsie Lester
Thelma Elsie Lester, 90, passed away Thursday (March 12, 2009) at Heritage Hall Healthcare Center, Big Stone Gap, after an extended illness.
She was the daughter of Myrtle Rose and Raleigh David Lester.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home Chapel with The Rev. Nick Brewer officiating.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Entombment followed in the Glencoe cemetery Mausoleum.

Elizabeth P. Gay
WAKEFIELD — The Rev. Elizabeth P. Gay, former pastor of Mount Zion AME Zion Church, Lawrenceville, died Oct. 5, 2008, at Obici Sentara Hospital Suffolk.
She was born March 7, 1948, to the late Joseph and Deloise Purdie.
Mrs. Gay attended school at L.P. Jackson High School in Dendron and worked as a child care provider at Mars AME Zion Daycare.
She preached her trial sermon on March 12, 1989, at Mars Hill AME Zion, under the leadership of the late Rev. E.L. Forbes.
Survivors include her husband, Richard E. Gay of Wakefield; a stepson, Lee Clary; a stepgrandchild, Lee Clary Jr.; a daughter, Cheryl Purdie; two brothers, Everett Purdie and Joseph Purdie Jr.; two sisters, Estelle Purdie and Jacqueline Hill (Reginial); one grandchild, Damian Purdie; four Goddaughters, Sharon Gay, Sonja Eley, Tamara Barnes and Sharvonda Roberson; two Godsons, Carlton Lankford Jr. and Kendall Roberson; devoted friends, Gracie Hill and Everlyn Sulmer, both of Wakefield.
The family wishes to thank all the staff of Obici Sentara Hospital and Sister Ruby Allen.
A funeral service was held Friday at Mars Hill AME Zion Church, Wakefield, with the Rev. Benjamin Petway officiating.
Interment followed at Mars Hill AME Zion Church cemetery.

Services were handled by the staff of Peace-Bland Funeral Home Waverly.

Mary L. Hendricks
BOYKINS — Mary Lucy Hendricks, 67, of the 32300 block of S. Main St., died Sept. 30, 2008.
A funeral was held Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church.
Engram Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
