Mr. Claude Edward Key, Jr.
(November 22, 1933 - January 17, 2012)
Mr. Claude Edward Key, Jr. (affectionately known as Lil Bro “pronounced Bruh” and Hammer), 78, of Sussex, Virginia entered eternal rest and peace, Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia.
Claude was born in Yale, Virginia on November 12, 1933, although he always celebrated his birthday on the second Sunday in November.
He accepted Christ at an early age at Calvary Baptist Church, Yale, Virginia.
Claude enjoyed being outdoors, working in his garden, and visiting with friends at the local corner store. He had a great sense of humor, and most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Claude was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Estelle Key, Sr.; step mother, Ipaige Key; and son, Donald “Joe” Key. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Dorothy Key; children, MacArthur Key (Vanessa), daughter-in-law Patricia Key, Barbara Bell (Ronald) of Petersburg, Dorothy Blunt (Ricky) of Courtland, and Willie Key (Patricia) of Chester; two brothers, Frankie Key (Gayle) and Christopher “Pete” Key; four sisters, Patricia Scott, Shirley Key, Sarah Smith (Anthony), and Edna Key; one brother-in-law, Ruben Hall (Hester); two sister-in-laws, Rosa Parham and Shirley Davis; a special aunt, Reaner Richardson; fourteen grandchildren which includes one devoted granddaughter whom he raised, Sholanda “Peaches” Key, who also served as his caregiver; nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will have a wake for Claude 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012. A homegoing service will be on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 1 p.m. Both will be held in the Chapel at William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg, Virginia. Elder Melvin Taylor will be officiating. The committal and benediction will be held at Blandford cemetery, Petersburg.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the staff of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg.

John F. Wellons
SEDLEY — John Frank Wellons, 90, died Dec. 19, 2008.
Mr. Wellons was a native of Sedley, a son of the late Levi Thomas and Sally Rose Wellons and was predeceased by his wife, Lucille Raiford Wellons and his son, John Curtis Wellons. John Frank was a Navy veteran of WWII, a retired brick contractor and a member of Sedley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his grandson, Chris Wellons and wife Theresa and great-grandson, John Stephen Wellons, all of Bowie, Md.
The funeral was held Tuesday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Armand Jalbert officiating.
Burial with military honors followed at Rosemont cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sedley Baptist Church, 17494 Johnson’s Mill Road, Sedley, VA 23878 or Sedley Volunteer Fire Department, 18080 Johnson’s Mill Road, Sedley, VA 23878.

Louise L. Holt
IVOR — Louise Lowe Holt, 88, died Dec. 26, 2008.
Born in Southampton County on Dec. 22, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Saint Luke and Mabel Drewry Lowe.
She was the widow of her husband of 63 years, William Henry Holt Jr.
Mrs. Holt was a member of the Corinth Friends Meeting, Ivor. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and grandma, a great cook and homemaker and a volunteer with the “Pink Ladies” at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
She was an avid gardener. She resided at Consulate Healthcare in Windsor for four years and nine months and during that time, despite her declining mental health, she was a much-loved bright spot for the residents and the staff.
Survivors include her four daughters, Becky Duval (Johnny), Toni Farrenkopf (Albert), both of Suffolk, Brenda Mathews (Richard) of Carrollton, and Donna Chesson (Doug) of Ivor; three sisters, Inez L. Holt of Ivor, Elise L. Asbell of Suffolk, Juanita L. Rousse of Raceland, La.; nine grandchildren, Candy D. Nickert (Joe) Laura F. Lathrop (Wayne), Daniel B. Farrenkopf (Yvette), R. Thomas Mathews, Jenna L. Johnson ( Sam), Hannah R. Mitchell (Matthew), Blaire D. Chesson, Adam H. Chesson, Tyler A. Chesson; eight great grandchildren, Noah L. Nickert, Luke W. Nickert, Alex E. Lathrop, Shawn D. Lathrop, Blake W. Farrenkopf, Dylan L. Farrenkopf, Brianna K. Farrenkopf, Ethan A. Mitchell.
She was predeceased by a brother, Haywood G. Lowe, and two sisters, Helen L. Warren and Sadie L. Turner.
A funeral service was held Monday by David Hobson at Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral in Wakefield.
Burial followed at Ivor cemetery.

Derryl L. Britt
CHESAPEAKE — Derryl Lamont “Lil Dee” Britt, 20, of the 700 block of Big Twig Lane, died Sept. 28, 2008.
He was born Aug. 23, 1988 in Chesapeake and attended Oscar Smith High School.
Survivors include his parents, Derryl and Angel Britt; sister, Nakia Britt; grandparents, Frances Sumblin (Earl) of Franklin; great-grandfather, Edward Britt of Franklin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Metropolitan Funeral Service, 120 W. Berkley Ave., Norfolk.
Interment will follow in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.

Minnie J. Hill
FRANKLIN — Minnie Johnson Duke Hill, 85, died Sept. 30, 2008.
Mrs. Hill was born in Holland, a daughter of the late Wade Shepard and Mary Hamilton Johnson.
She was predeceased by two husbands, Roy Carr Duke Sr. and Billy Joe Hill; four sisters, Debbie Wilkins, Becky Rountree, Annie Mae Johnson, and Clara Pierce; and two brothers, Samuel and Robert Johnson.
A graduate of Holland High School, she attended Chowan College and Elon College.
She owned and operated multiple motels from North Carolina to Florida.
She was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Carr Duke Jr. and wife Susan of Franklin, Raye Johnson Duke and wife Carolyn of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Wade Shepard Johnson Jr. and wife Marjorie of Franklin; eight grandchildren, Ryan Duke and wife Jennifer of Suffolk, Scott Duke of Greenville, N.C., Matt Duke and wife Christina of Chase City, Marty Duke and wife Leah of Pasadena, Md., Bill and Rebecca Allmond of Leesburg, and Dan and Valerie Hardesty of Charlotte; and eight great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Duke, Josie Duke, Kylie Seidenburg, Zachery Duke, Matthew Duke, Jordan and Cameron Hardesty, and Meredith Allmond.
The funeral will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. James H. Hyatt officiating.
Interment will follow in Poplar Spring cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to Franklin Congregational Christian Church, 412 North High Street, Franklin, VA. 23851.

Algie L. Turner
PORTSMOUTH — Algie Lee Turner of 1410 Newby Road, died Oct. 1, 2008, at the VA Medical Living Community Center.
Mr. Turner was a native of Newsoms. He graduated from Southampton High School, Courtland.
He was a retired Army/Navy veteran.
He joined the Army in October 1965 to 1968; he was awarded the Purple Heart by the Army in March 1967.
In 1969, he registered in the U.S. Navy until he retired in 1987.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Carphine Turner; his parents, Everette and Margeret Turner; and a son, Henry Cuffee.
Survivors include his four children: two daughters, Gail (Jim) Ramsey of Chesapeake and Vanessa Cuffee of the home; two sons, Vernon (Kim) Griffin of Portsmouth and Michael Cuffee of Williamsburg; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor T. Best of Franklin; one brother, James Turner of Franklin; one aunt, Fannie Griggs; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at Greater Bethel AME Church, Chesapeake, Thursday at noon by the Rev. William Chatman.
Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Graves Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

LaVerne C. Spruill
PORTSMOUTH — Laverne Cassell Spruill, 65, of the 3000 block of Nelson St., died Oct. 4, 2008.
She was the daughter of the late Lucy Artis Cassell and Hubert Cassell.
Mrs. Spruill was born May 20, 1943, in Yadkins in Norfolk County.
She graduated from Crestwood High School in 1961 and later attended Norfolk State University where she received a major in psychology.
She loved to tell of visions and experiences with angels beginning at the age of 8.
She loved working with teens and worked at the Pines Residential Treatment Center in Portsmouth for eight years.
She was an ordained minister, counselor, pianist and an organist. She was deeply spiritual and joined Divine Baptist Church in Chesapeake at an early age.
She became legally blind in 1996 after having 10 eye surgeries and began kidney dialysis in 2000.
Survivors include her husband, Grady V. Spruill of Portsmouth; sons, Samuel Spruill (Errin) of Portsmouth and Carnelius Spruill (Shalmaria) of Norfolk; sister, the Rev. Hazel Cassell Minor of Norfolk; niece, Dr. Viola Vaughan-Eden (Scott) of Williamsburg and five grandchildren; aunts, Mary Scott Davis of Chesapeake, Thelma Faulk of Suffolk, Wilhamena Jordan of Nags Head, N.C., Georgia Mayo of Holland and Ruth Beatrice Holland of Holland; sister-in-law, Dorothy Redman of Tazewell, N.C.; brother-in-law, Rudolph Spruill of Omaha, Neb.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be held today from 2 to 7 p.m. at J.T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake.
A life celebration service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Divine Baptist Church, 2917 Old Galberry Road, Chesapeake.
Interment will be in Cassell Cuffee Demby Family cemetery, Galberry Road in Chesapeake.
Thanks to the staff and nurses of the River Point Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Virginia Beach for the care, love and companionship given to LaVerne.
Thank you also to the DaVita Dialysis for the love and support these eight years.

Naomi M. Russ
ZUNI — Naomi Leigh Munford Russ, 32, died Oct. 16, 2008.
She was born in Alexandria, and was a graduate of Isle of Wight Academy.
She was predeceased by a brother, David Hansel (Hans) Munford.
Survivors include her 1-year-old son, Carter Grayson Hobbs; mother, Nancy Ellis Patterson and husband Vernon; father, John A. Munford Jr, and wife Patty; sister, Terri Munford Hoag; half-brother, Jason Munford; paternal grandfather, John A. Munford Sr; nephew, Logan Todd Hoag; and her fiancé, Eric Shane Edwards; and uncle, Thurman Munford and wife Martha.
The funeral will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin with the Revs. Charles Alvis and Howard Vinson officiating. Burial will follow in Black Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home and suggests that memorials, in Naomi’s name, be made to Wright Funeral Home, P. O. Box 743, Franklin, Va. 23851.

Leo Hardy Jr.
DREWRYVILLE — The Rev. Leo Hardy Jr. died Oct. 17, 2008, at his residence.
The Rev. Hardy was a native of Southampton County and was born to the late Leo Hardy Sr. and Catherine L. Mayfield Hardy.
He was the first black high school basketball player to be recruited to play at Old Dominion University, where he received a degree in marketing.
He was self-employed and president/CEO of Positive Expressions Janitorial & Home Repair Service.
He was instrumental in forming a nonprofit organization in Southampton County to provide housing to low- and moderate-income families.
He helped numerous families buy their first home, and assisted many families to get and keep their homes. He was an advocate for the downtrodden and forgotten members of the community.
He led a vocal effort to provide assistance to the flood victims in Princeville, N.C. His organization built three duplexes to house Hurricane Floyd victims in Southampton County and the City of Franklin.
He was the associate pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Highway 58 in Drewryville, where he also served as youth Sunday School teacher, and lead singer in the church choir.
Survivors include his faithful and loving wife of 36 years, Brindle V. Sykes Hardy of Drewryville; one son, Owen Lamonte Hardy (Carisa) of Portsmouth; one daughter, Brindle H. Darden of Portsmouth; four grandsons, Lajuan Hardy of Franklin, Owen Lamonte Hardy Jr., land Hardy of Portsmouth and Seneca B. Darden II; one granddaughter, Mariah LeBrin Darden of Portsmouth; one brother, Otis L. Hardy of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Linda E. Porter (Everett) of Franklin and Shirley L. Walden (Howard) of Newsoms; a very close friend of the family, Corey Ducre; four aunts, three uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Seneca B. Darden.
He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.
A Life Celebration service will beheld at 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Drewryville.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Knox-High Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
