Anna Childs
Anna Nearhood Childs, 88, of 10135 Lake Jackson Drive in Manassas, and formerly of Covington and Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005.
She was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Detroit, Mich.A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will be in Lone Star cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Noe, Kevin Noe, Keith Noe, Steve Prokop, and Richard Cranford.
Friends may pay their respects at any time at Arritt Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service Saturday.

Janet Dorcus
Janet West Dorcus, 64, of 826 Long Ave. died Saturday, April 9, 2005, in Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem.
The funeral service conducted today at 3 p.m. the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Willie L. Cannon,Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Milton Helton, Kevin Pierce, Darnell Hunter, Eddie Cosby, Eddie Goode, John Goode, Kevin Allen, and Kenneth Johnson.
Flower Bearers will be Pearl Miller, Barbara Halsey, Thelma Halsey, Jeanette Reynolds, Yvonne Williams, Julie Smith, and members of the Covington Women’s Senior Center.

Dot Frye
Mrs. Dorothy Jean Lantz Frye, age 76, of 3619 Jackson River Road, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at her residence. She was the wife of Edward Eugene Frye Sr.
Mrs. Frye was born October 4, 1928, in the Morris Hill section of Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Bertha Lewis Lantz.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Hartsfield officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gary Marshall and the Rev. Bo Setliff. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Edward Eugene Frye Jr., Chad Edward Frye, Richard Cochran, Robert Varner, Ronnie Broce, Jack Noel and Darfow Rice. Honorary pallbearers will be Buster Noel, Jim Guth, Ethel Whitehead, Scott Lasam, Abe Miller, James Flint, Raymond Oyler and Roger Fox.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorial tributes Mrs. Frye take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va, 24422.

Carl Harouff
HOT SPRINGS — David “Carl” Harouff, 91, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and formerly of Hot Springs, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Fort Wayne.
He was born May 16, 1913, in Burnsville, a son of the late David Christian and Lucy Brisco Harouff.
Mr. Harouff was a baker for the The Homestead Resort until he retired after 47 years of service. He served his country during World War II as a member of the U. S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church. He served the church as a Sunday school teacher superintendent. He was a member of Valley Springs Masonic Lodge No. 265 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 186, for 50 years. James W. Gardner Encampment, Clifton Forge Canton, P.M. No. 22, Hot Springs Rebekah Lodge No. 64 and the Modern Woodsman of America.
Mr. Harouff was the last surviving member of eight sons in his family.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Frances Decker Haroff of Fort Wayne. The Harouffs were married Dec. 3, 1939. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Dale Schaefer of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, David Schaefer, Derrick Schaefer, Hope and husband Ben Eastman; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Eastman.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the McLaughlin Funeral Home Chapel, Ashwood, with the Rev. Debbie Carey and Jimmy Green officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Criser, Denny Hansford, Walker May, Julian Griffin, Jack Woodzell, Jimmy Green, Donald Lee Altizer, Bobby Thomas and Dale Loan.
Honorary pallbearers will be William Berry, Nelson Carpenter Jr., Teddy Woodzell and Charlie Lindsay.
The family will receive friends this evening at McLaughlin Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Harouff will be staying at the residence of Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Lindsay in Hot Springs, where the family will receive friends at any time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mickey Robertson Fund, c/o McLaughlin Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1112, Hot Springs, Va. 24445; or Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Charlotte May, P.O. Box 116 Hot Springs, Va., 24445.

Archie Nicely
CLIFTON FORGE — Archie Victor Nicely, 68, of 915 Alleghany Ave., Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Alleghany Regional Hospital.
He was born on July 13, 1936, in Clifton Forge, a son of the late Jake Senior and Mary Blanch Webb Nicely.
He worked for Acadia as a molder and was U. S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Madeline Furry Nicely of Clifton Forge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Regina and Robert Hughes and Lisa and David Blankenship both of Clifton Forge; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Archie Nicely Jr. of Clifton Forge and Rocky and Debbie Nicely of Roanoke; eight sisters, Lula Bell Nicely, Linda Faye Brady, Mary Brady, and Ruby Furry all of Clifton Forge, Lillie England and Patsy Willie both of Louisiana, Nancy Dolan of California and Janie Nicely of Richmond; one brother, Jake S. Nicely Jr. of Clifton Forge; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Nicely and Jack Nicely.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with the Rev. Frankie Neff officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery, Clifton Forge.
Pallbearers will be Danny Nicely, Tommy Blankenship, Brandon Blankenship, Tony Nicely, Todd Nicely, Casey Hughes.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening at Nicely Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30 p.m., and at the residence, 1300 Callie Mines Road, Clifton Forge, at other times.

Grant Nicely
CLIFTON FORGE — Grant Dillard Nicely, 61, of Roanoke, left this earthly life to be with our Lord Jesus on Tuesday, April 12, 2005, after a well-fought battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 13, 1943, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Russell Eugene Nicely Sr. and Mary Vest Nicely.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Central Advent Christian Church cemetery, Clifton Forge, with the Rev. Charles Gregory officiating.
In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Nicely’s body was cremated. There will be no visitation at Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge, which is handling funeral arrangements.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, Alleghany Highlands Division, P. O. Box 11, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.

Larry Payton
Mr. Larry Ray “Popcorn” Payton, age 65, of 802 N. Rockbridge Ave., died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at his residence.
He was the husband of Wilma Jean Lepley Payton.
Mr. Payton was born Nov. 4, 1939, in Alleghany County, the son of Georgia Dressler Payton and the late Robert Ray Payton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating. Interment will follow in Mount. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.Graveside rites will be conducted by the Covington Fire Department and the National Guard.
Pallbearers will be Clarence Kellison, Mackenzie Kellison, Alan Livesay, Patrick Livesay, Bill Gumm, and Leon Middleton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Covington firefighters.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Daphne and Alan Livesay, 406 Dunbrack Rd., Covington. Covington Lodge 610 of the Loyal Order of Moose will offer a service of tribute at 7:15 p.m.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Covington Fire Department, 435 W. Hawthorne St., Covington, Va. 24426, or the Alleghany Unit of the American Heart Association, in care of Joy Brackman Weeks, memorial chairwoman, 2212 Dressler Dr., Covington, Va. 24426.

James Bistline
Former Clifton Forge resident James A. “Jim” Bistline, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, in a northern Virginia Hospital.
Mr. Bistline oversaw the steam program of the Southern Railway and its 1982 successor, Norfolk Southern, for 20 years.
Mr. Bistline’s 39-year career with Southern and NS began in thew law department in 1948. He graduated first from his class from Duje University in 1937 and then graduated from the Columbia University School of Law in 1940. he was assigned to the U.S. Army Judge Advocate’s office during World War II, serving both stateside and in Europe. Following the war, he was a junior prosecutor during the Nazi war trials.
Mr. Bistline became an assistant to Southern’s president in 1967 and he retired as general manager of steam operations for NS in 1987.
He was born in Newport, Pa., where the family home was near the Pennsylvania Railroad’s four-track main line. During his first two years of high school, the family moved to Old Fort, N.C., where he watched the Southern Railway trains climb the grade at Ridgecrest. The family next moved to Cumberland, Md., where the Baltimore & Ohio and Western Maryland were influences. Mr. Bistline said all of those experiences led to a deep love of railroading.
Mr. Bistline and his wife of 47 years, Lillian, a teacher, had two sons. Mrs. Bistline was a flight attendant for Capital Airlines on board DC-3s when the two met in the late 1940s. She died in 1996 at the age of 75.

Eleanor Hardeaker
Eleanor B. Hardeaker, 84, died this morning, after an extended illness at the Brian Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by Shanklin Funeral Home.

Mildred Kern
CLIFTON FORGE — Mildred Emmaline Herron Kern, 78, of 3107 Douthat Rd., Clifton Forge died Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at Brian Center Nursing Home, Low Moor.
She was born July 21, 1927, in Fayette County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Matt Everett and Tillia Jane Rutherford Herron. She was a devoted mother and christian, having been a licensed minister. She was a member of Gloryland Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cecil Kern Sr, three sisters; Irene Persinger, Garnett Robinson, and Aline Jones, and two brothers; Lawrence Herron and Otha Berl Herron.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane Kern Thomas and husband Robert, two sons; Alvin "Amos" Lewis Kern, Sr. and wife Ann, and Walter Vermilya Kern and wife Debora, all of Clifton Forge, a sister, Beulah McSherry of Clifton Forge, seven grandchildren; Amy Wilhelm, Alvin L. Kern Jr. Amanda Renae Hayslett, Brandon Kern, Cameron Kern, Christopher Freels, and Harold Tharp, two great-grandchildren; Gaige Kern and Olivia Wilhelm, and a number of nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Larry Sprouse.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with the Elder Raymond Megginson officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery, Clifton Forge.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Kesterson, Leon Saville, Harold Tharp, Dale Jones, Walt Durham, and Billy Berberette.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Jane Thomas, 208 Revere Street, Clifton Forge.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Gloryland Church, 430 W. Ridgeway St, Clifton Forge, Va 24422.

Lora Iva “Jane” Stone
Lora Iva “Jane” Hepler Stone, 74, of 2311 Snake Run Road, died Monday, October 24, 2005, at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.
She was born January 1, 1931, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Harvey Lee and Mary Reynolds Hepler.
Mrs. Stone was a member of Dunlap Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Day “Jack” Stone, in 1994; six brothers, Alfred Hepler, Preston Hepler, David Hepler, Eugene Hepler, Dewey Hepler , Johnny Hepler and one sister, Juanita Arthur. .
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Anita Stone of Covington; four grandchildren, Valerie Jack and her husband, Robert, Christie Simmons and her husband, Chuck, Linda Stone, and Raymond “R.C.” Stone, all of Covington; 3 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Hepler and Howard Hepler, both of Covington; one sister, Ethel Daisy Armentrout of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with Bill Carter officiating, assisted by the Rev. John Cahall.
Interment will be in the Carter Family cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Danny Foster, Ryland Bates, William Withrow, Jr., Jessie Carter, Arnold Harvey, and Johnny Humphries.
Friends may pay their respects at anytime at Arritt Funeral Home. The family will receive their friends this evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
