Peggy Boswell
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — Miss Peggy Ellawise Boswell, age 80, of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., died today at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, W. Va.
Miss Boswell was born August 28, 1926 in Cass, W. Va., the daughter of the late Roderick A. Boswell and Hettie McDermott Boswell.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by Loving Funeral Home.

Mary Johnson
Mrs. Mary Alice May Johnson, age 79, of Valley Ridge, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Clarence Ivan Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson was born September 7, 1927 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Moses M. May and Mary Pearl Byer May Newcomer. A lifetime member of this community, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Johnson loved working in the yard and was an avid reader. She enjoyed collecting Longaberger baskets.
In addition to her parents, Moses M. May and Mary Pearl Byer May Newcomer and her husband, Clarence Ivan Johnson, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred May Bartley on February 15, 2005
Mrs. Johnson is survived by two daughters, Mary Melissa J. “Missy” Hendrick and husband, Lynn of Roanoke and Sheilah J. “Shelly” Michie of Selma; three grandchildren, Shawn M. Michie, Brandon L. Hendrick and Ashley B. Michie; one great-grandson, Nathanial J. “Nate” Michie; and one sister, Laura M. Guth and husband, James of Covington.
A private service was held today with the Rev. Thurmond G. Ayers officiating. Interment followed in Alleghany Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Lynn C. Hendrick, Shawn M. Michie, Brandon L. Hendrick, James E. Guth, Johnathan K. Simpson, Randolph W. Downey and Michael P. Michie.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Karen Buzzard, 807 McCormick Blvd, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.

Vernon Spinks
SELMA — Vernon Clifford Spinks, age 64, of 1405 Donovan Street, Selma, died Monday, March 26, 2007 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia after a courageous battle with heart disease.
Born September 6, 1942 in Maxwelton, W. Va., he was a son of the late Billy Clifford Spinks and Gladys Dotson Spinks. He was a retired maintenance supervisor from The Homestead and also worked in cable TV maintenance. He was a member and past worshipful master of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge No. 166 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Alleghany Royal Arch Chapter No. 24, the Alleghany Commandery No. 23, the Knights Templar of Virginia, the Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Roanoke, and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. He was a member of Selma Church of the Brethren as well as member and past president of the Selma Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Gracie Spinks.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Broughman Spinks of Selma, a daughter, Holly Spinks of Selma, two sons; Christopher Spinks and wife Katie of Covington and Steven Spinks and wife Missy of Buchanan, two sisters; Geraldine Ingram and husband Avis of St. Augustine, Fla. and Anna Mae Paxton and husband Bruce of Covington, a brother Ralph Spinks and wife Margaret of Forrest Hills, Ky.; eight grandchildren; Victoria Spinks, Kinley Spinks, Erica Spinks, Miranda Smithers, Ben Spinks, Haden Spinks, Veronica Helvey, and Gavin Spinks; an uncle, Roy Spinks of Greenbrier County, W. Va., and a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Darlene Downer of St. Augustine, Fla.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Reverend Ed West officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery in Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be members of the Selma Volunteer Fire Department.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence, 1405 Donovan St, Selma.
The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, ATTN: Joy Weeks, memorial chairman, 2212 Dressler Drive, Covington, VA 24426.

Virginia Cunningham
CLIFTON FORGE — Virginia Atley "Gypsy" Simpson Cunningham, 95, of The Golden Living Center, Clifton Forge died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at The Golden Living Center.
Born September 29, 1913 in Selma, she was a daughter of the late Emmett and Della Inge Simpson. She was a homemaker throughout her life and attended Clifton Forge Baptist Church. She had resided at The Golden Living Center since 2002.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Ralph Cunningham in 1983, sisters, Mildred Carter and Elizabeth Deeds, and brothers, Mason and Landon Simpson.
She is survived by her children, Julia Ferguson (Ed) of Englewood, Fla., Emmett Cunningham (Elaine) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Foraker (Larry) of Englewood, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Oakland Presbyterian Church cemetery, Low Moor with the Rev. J. Glenn Linthicum officiating. There will be no formal visitation.
The family respectfully requests no floral tributes. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or to the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, 511 McCormick Blvd., Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.

Warren King
WYTHEVILLE — Warren Olden King, 88, of Wytheville, died Thursday , January 29, 2009, at the Wytheville County Hospital.
He was born December 9, 1920 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Wilbur G. and Emma Evans King.
Mr. King retired from Hercules Powder Inc. in Covington, Ga. He was a member of the All Nations Church in Wytheville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Mr. King is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Wright King of Wytheville; two daughters, Linda Messer and her husband, Charles of Wytheville and Anita McElroy and her husband, Keith of Cary, N.C.; one granddaughter, Sheri Simasek of Maitland, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Walker Simasek and Nathaniel Simask, both of Maitland, Fla.; one sister, Velma Armentrout and her husband , Fred of Fuquay Vairna, N.C. and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Bowles officiating.
The interment will follow in Lone Star cemetery.
The family will receive their friends Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home.

Randolph Adwell
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Randolph B. Adwell, 82, of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., passed away this morning, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, W.Va.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs.

Alice Garrison
Alice Johnson Garrison, 98, of New Haven, Conn., and formerly of Clifton Forge, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, following an extended illness.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Alice Willis of Columbus, Ohio, and June Garrison of New Haven, Conn.; five grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Olivia Brown of Los Angeles, Calif., and Louise Sorrell of Clifton Forge; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Garrison was preceded in death by a son, James “Buddy” Garrison.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Eugene Jackson
MILLBORO — Eugene M. Jackson, 81, of River Road, Millboro, died Saturday morning, Jan. 24, 2009, at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.
He was born Aug. 15, 1927, in Bacova, the son of the late James Arthur Jackson and Alice Genevia Brinkley Jackson.
He was married to his wife of 46 years, Marily J. Jackson, who preceded him in death in 2004.
Mr. Jackson attended Westminster Chapel in Millboro.
He enjoyed hunting and other outdoor activities and repairing clocks and victrolas.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shari Jean and Bruce Byrom of Bourbonnais, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Rochelle Jackson of Emington, Ill.; a grandson, Jacob Eugene Byrom of Bourbonnais; a sister, Claudia May Puffenbarger of Carloover; a sister-in-law, Lorean Jackson and husband, Lloyd, of Ypsilanti, Mich.; special nephew, Ralph Puffenbarger Jr.; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Keitrich of Burkeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Dora Hodge, Englith Puffenbarger, Mildred Reeves, and Bertha Lee Lowry; and one brother, Lloyd Jackson.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Woodland Union Church in Millboro with the Rev. Punker Robertson officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the church social hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Westminster Chapel Church, Millboro, Va. 24460, or the Millboro Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 295, Millboro, Va. 24460.

Frances Nicely
Frances Marie Carpenter Nicely, 61, formerly of Covington, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.
She was born Nov. 27, 1947, in Alleghany County, a daughter of Mildred Carpenter of Covington and the late Lawrence E. Crowder.
Mrs. Nicely was a resident of Ruxton Home in Staunton.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Nicely is survived by a daughter, Angela Jerman Biggs and husband, Keith, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; a son, William Allen Jerman and his financee, Angel Hoffman, of Covington; two granddaughters, Rachel Schileve and Cari Biggs; a grandson, Bryan Biggs, all of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; three sisters, Helen Hipert and husband, Richie, Gail Eason and husband, Jeff, and Carol Lipes, all of Covington; a brother, Michael Carpenter and wife, Hilda, of Randallstown, Md.; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Cedar Hill cemetery with the Rev. Michael Fleenor officiating.
Friends wishing to attend the service should assemble at Arritt Funeral Home by 12:30 p.m.

Gloria Topping
CLIFTON FORGE — Gloria Jean Byer Topping, age 58, of Clifton Forge, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Radford.
She was born on July 21, 1950, in Covington, a daughter of the late Charles Byron Byer and Evelyn Pearl Hodge Byer.
Mrs. Topping served as deputy commissioner of the revenue for the city of Clifton Forge for a number of years and was a member of the former Altamont Presbyterian Church in Covington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by grandparents, John and Muriel Byer, who raised her; her mother-in-law, Evelyn Topping; and an uncle, Steven Kent Byer Sr.
She is survived by her husband,

Harry Robert "Bobby"
Topping of Clifton Forge; a daughter, Melissa T. Phillips and fiance, Andrew Fuller, of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Phillips; five sisters, Joan Hawse and husband, Charles, of Clifton Forge, Debbie Byer and friend, Erin Sullivan, of Christiansburg, Annette McFadden and husband, Larry, of Covington, Anita McGuire and husband, Bobby, of Clifton Forge, and Joy Goad and husband, Cliff, of Christiansburg; stepmother, Ellen Louise Byer of Clifton Forge; father-in-law, Harry Topping of Clifton Forge; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with the Rev. Bill Gilliland and the Rev. Steven Noel officiating. Entombment will be in the mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. The entombment will be private.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.

Mike Kraft
WARREN COUNTY, N.C. — Michael Edward "Mike" Kraft Sr., 80 of Warren County, N.C. and formerly of Richmond, Collinsville, and Clifton Forge, passed away March 18, 2008.
He was born April 10, 1927 to Michael H. and Maude Wickline Kraft. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and was a graduate of Roanoke College and an Alumni of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
After retiring from Defense General Supply Center with 30 years service, he lived for the past 20 years with his recently deceased wife of 54 years, Edith, on Buggs Island Lake in North Carolina.
Mike was a charter member of St Luke’s United Methodist Church in Chesterfield County.
He was also a proud member of the "Good Ol’ Boys" and "The Ivy House Gang" of Clifton Forge. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature and animals. He will be remembered as a gentleman with an abundant kindness and respect for all, his passion for life, his tireless devotion as a loving husband and caregiver, his friendship, and being the greatest Dad his children could ever have wished for and could not have loved more. Mike, or "Ned", had the endearing ability to brighten anyone’s day with three words, "Thank You Kindly".
He is survived by his daughter Carol Kraft of Manson, N.C.; son Michael "Buzz" Kraft of Richmond, and many good friends.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at 2:30 p.m. in Crown Hill cemetery in Clifton Forge with the Rev. Charlie Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends at Nicely Funeral Home, 405 Alleghany Street, Clifton Forge from 1 p.m. until time of service at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choosing.

Ollie McManamay
WARM SPRINGS — Ollie Torrence McManamay, 86, of Warm Springs, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs.
She was born Dec. 24, 1921 in Bath County, the daughter of the late George Price Hoover and Laura Brinkley Hoover.
Mrs. McManamay was retired from Bath County Community Hospital. She was a member of the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by five daughters, Shirley Swearengin of Hot Springs, Carol Adkins and husband Hershel of Warm Springs, Joyce McManamay and fiancé George Montgomery of Staunton, Diane Botkin and husband Johnny of Millboro, Sue Boothe and husband Tom of Salem; a brother, Paul Hoover of Covington; two sisters, Blanche Hodge of Hot Springs, Ruth Hoover Locklear of Pembroke, N.C.; special friends, Barrie and Anita Wolf of Warm Springs; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Emily Matthews and Pauline Turner.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at McLaughlin Funeral Home with the Rev. Will Vaus officiating.
Interment will be in Warm Springs cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Barrie Wolf, Jamie Windsor, Justin Windsor, Jerry Adkins, Andrew Boothe and Scott Robertson.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. this evening at McLaughlin Funeral Home.
