Alonzo E. Brown
Alonzo E. Brown, 80, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at his home in Remington.
He was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Remington.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Lula Brown; three sisters, Leora Boyd, Frances Brown and Gloria Newman; and a son, Calvin A. Brown.
He was baptized at Providence Baptist Church in Remington at a young age. Mr. Brown was a World War II veteran and a retired brick and stone mason.
Survivors include his wife, Earlene V. Brown; three daughters, Barbara Mayers of Washington, D.C., Marcia Tyree of Minneapolis, Minn., and Sandra Brown of Roanoke; three sons, Raymond Brown of Warrenton, Stanley Brown of Fredericksburg, Michael Brown of Cheverly, Md.; three daughters-in-law and two sons-in-law; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; two sisters, Helen Williams of Pittsburgh, Pa., Esther Brown of Alexandria; four brothers, Henry Lincoln Brown of Remington; Eugene Brown of Scottsville, George Brown of Alexandria, and Robert Brown of Remington.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Providence Baptist Church in Remington.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m., at Hollywood cemetery in Remington, with the Rev. Earl McKenzie of Dale City officiating.

Ernest Franklin Crane
Ernest F. Crane died on Monday, July 14, 2003, in Orange.
Born April 10, 1928, on “Horseshoe” farm near Rapidan, he was the youngest of 11 children born to the late Allie William and Bettie Lee Brown Crane.
Upon graduation from Orange High School in 1945, Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer USS Meredith and witnessed the end of World War II.
After the war Ernest developed a legacy on Main Street in Orange having been in business for more than 50 years selling Esso, Exxon and Texaco products.
He was an avid baseball fan and fisherman. Ernest was a former Little League coach and Scout Master. He served as a deacon for many years at the Orange Baptist Church, where he was a member.
Ernest was a charter member of the Orange Kiwanis Club and a life member of the Orange County Rescue Squad.
He leaves behind his wife, Peggy Newman Crane; two sons, Jeffrey L. Crane and wife Kathy of Culpeper, and Kevin S. Crane of Orange; three grandchildren, Daniel A. Crane and Elizabeth A. Crane of Culpeper and Christopher Crane of Orange; and a brother, Newton B. Crane and wife Alice of Culpeper.
Survivors also include sisters-in-law Barbara N. Bartley of Orange, Helen N. Piazza and husband Sal of Revere, Mass., Frances A. Newman of Rhodesville, Maxine B. Crane of Culpeper and Barbara M. Crane of True Blue; brothers-in-law, Carroll E. Newman of Topeka, Kan., and Robert Daggett of Kennebunkport, Maine, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be conducted by Dr. Stanley Johnson at the Orange Baptist Church on Friday, July 18, at 1 p.m. Interment will be held at Emmanual Episcopal cemetery in Rapidan.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 17, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.
Pallbearers named are Tom Woolfolk, Carter Jacobs, Buddy Shumate, Eugene Byram, Royce Hughes, G.L. Haney Jr., Pete Modena and Steve Hopkins.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Orange County Rescue Squad or Hospice of the Rapidan.

Laney Booten Menefee
Laney Booten Menefee, 75, of Culpeper, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital.
He was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Rappahannock County to the late Charles William Menefee and Missouri Florence Clark Menefee.
Mr. Menefee was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, James William Menefee and his wife Peggy of Bealeton, and George William Menefee and his wife Sally Ann of Woodbridge; and four daughters, Frances Ann Brooks, Ruby M. Orange and her friend, Hurley Banks, Betty A. Settle and her husband Frank, all of Culpeper, and Juanita Kenney and her husband Larry of Reva.
Additional survivors include 10 grandchildren, David Lynn Menefee, Dana Lee Hensley, Tracey Brooks, William Brooks Jr., Gregory Wayne Settle, Jerry Franklin Settle, George Menefee Jr., Donna J. Davies, Patricia K. Messa and Michael D. Kenney; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Menefee was preceded in death by his wife, Corine Grady Wharton Menefee; two sisters, Alice Virginia Peyton and Ella Mae Menefee; and two brothers, Elbert Menefee and Issac Menefee.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with the Rev. John S. Farrar officiating.
Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

William Glenn Compton, 48, of Manassas, formerly of Culpeper, died Saturday, May 18, 2002 at Fairfax INOVA hospital. He was born April 2, 1954 in Charlottsville. He is survived by his mother, Ruby Compton, of Culpeper, and his sister, Lois Compton, of Culpeper. Mr. Compton is preceded in death by his father, Jacob Glenn Compton, his paternal grandparents, Vashti Haught Compton and William Compton, and his maternal grandparents, Corrie Smith Gallihugh and Weldon T. Gallihugh. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 21, 2002 from 7 to 9 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. Curtis Hallet Jones, a resident of Bayford, Va., passed away on July 13, 2003, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center in Culpeper, Va. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Barbara B. Nowlin
Barbara B. Nowlin, 57, of Amissville, Va., died on July 10, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. A private family service was held. Joynes Funeral Home in Warrenton handled the arrangements.

Gladys Virginia Jones
Gladys Virginia Jones, 92, of Culpeper, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born December 8, 1910, in Culpeper to the late George Woodville Hitt and Lucy Myers Hitt.
Mrs. Jones was a member of Stevensburg Methodist Church and attended Lael Baptist Church. She retired as owner of the Jack & Jill, a retail shop for children in Culpeper. She is remembered for her enjoyment of her music.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen Delores Brookman, of Culpeper, and three grandchildren, Patricia Brookman Foan and her husband, Gordon, of Richmond, Michael Eugene Brookman, of Rixeyville, and Rebecca Lynn Howington and her husband, Buddy, of Culpeper.
Additional survivors include eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Wood Brown and Katherine Heflin.
One of thirteen children, Mrs. Jones is preceded in death by her husband, Jenephar Scott Jones, and ten brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Va.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 16, at 11 a.m. in the Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. Gordon George, Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview cemetery.

Elise Fischer Peyton
Elise Fischer Peyton, 78, of Windy Hill Gardens, Rapidan, Va., died Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Culpeper Health Care Center.
Born April 29, 1925 in Eberstadt, Germany, she was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Peyton.
Mrs. Peyton was a member of Rapidan Foundation, longtime member of Orange Womens Club and former member of Rapid Ann Garden Club.
She attended services at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapidan.
Mrs. Peyton is survived by a daughter, Margarete Elisebeth Peyton of Lynchburg, Va.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Waddell Memorial Presbyterian Church cemetery in Rapidan, Va. conducted by Rev. William Pendleton of Harrisonburg, Va.

Pauline P. Tyler
Pauline P. Tyler, 80, of Maryland, formerly of Warrenton, died on June 24, 2003, at Doctor’s Hospital in Lanham, Md. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Moser Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Arlington National cemetery.

Mary Louise Bradley
Mary Louise Bradley, 66, of Madison, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at her residence. She was born March 1, 1937 in Mills River, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Lewis A. Allman and Bonnie Mae Woods Allman and wife of the late Waymond Bradley.
Mary enjoyed reading and gardening and was an exceptional seamstress. She also enjoyed quilting, bird watching and showing acts of kindness to all those around her. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria D. Brown and husband Scott of Bealeton, Shari D. Jenkins and husband Steve of Sperryville; two sons, Lewis W. Bradley of Big Meadows, Richard A. Bradley and wife, Sonya of Reva; two brothers, Leroy L. Allman of East Flat Rock, North Carolina, Rev. Ezra W. Allman of Penrose, North Carolina; two sisters, Etta Mae Collier of Canal Point, Florida, Betty J. Cox of Flat Rock, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Strawser, Christina Sanford, Robert Jenkins III, Alan, Travis, Leslie Bradley, Steven, Sarah and Jacob Jenkins; and four great-grandchildren, Courtney, Emily, Madison and Bruce.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at Madison Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison.

Irene Elizabeth Johnson

Judge Robert A. Pulcini
Judge Robert A. Pulcini, of Earlysville, Va., died suddenly on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, while on judicial assignment in Austin, Texas. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 15, at 12 noon at Found and Sons Chapel. Interment will follow in Culpeper National cemetery, with honors provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post #330 and the Culpeper V.F.W. Post #2524. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, P.O. Box 7047, Charlottesville, VA 22906. Raymond E. Clark, Jr.
Raymond E. Clark, Jr., 69, of Remington, Va., died on Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
He was born on December 2, 1933 in Staunton, Va.
He served as an MP in the U.S. Army. Mr. Clark retired as a sorter at the Merrifield Post Office. He was a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church. He worked at the Culpeper Wal-Mart as a greeter. He was a collector of aluminum cans and state quarters. He was a movie buff and loved to laugh and joke.
Survivors include his wife, Jane D. Clark of Remington, Va.; one son, Raymond Letcher Clark of Manassas, Va.; two daughters, Rebecca Lee of Garner, N.C., Dorothy Clark Evans of Princeton, N.C.; one step-daughter, Brittney Alisha Andes of Remington, Va.; one brother, Ernest Lee Clark of Aylett, Va.; two grandchildren, Candace Clark of Garner, N.C., Luke Christian Evans of Princeton, N.C.; one great-grandchild, Erik Burnette of Garner, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Lane Clark; his mother, Jane McGraw Clark; and his father, Raymond E. Clark, Sr.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 12, at noon at Victory Baptist Church with Pastor Clinton Owens officiating.
Interment will be in Pleasant Valley cemetery in Annandale, Va.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton.

Marion V. Shanks
Marion V. Shanks, 64, passed peacefully on July 8, 2003, in Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa.
Marion was born in Warrenton, Va. to the late Douglas and Marion Marshall on July 28, 1938.
Marion was predeceased by her husband, John Shanks of Culpeper, Va. and her son, Michael Shanks.
She is survived by one daughter, Ivaden Strother of Culpeper, Va.; three sons, John Shanks, Jr. of Washington, D.C., Larry Shanks of Harriburg, Pa., and Ernest Shanks of Waldorf, Maryland; and one sister, Elizabeth Pendleton of Harrisburg; three brothers, Douglas Marshall Jr. of Warrenton, Va., Robert Allen Marshall of Ivanho, Va., Howard Leonard Marshall of Orange, Va.; and one son-in-law, Freddie Strother; six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Her viewing will be held at W.C. Thompson Funeral Home in Culpeper, Va. on Saturday, July 12, from 11 a.m. until 12 noon with funeral services following from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Irene Elizabeth Johnson, 42, of Reston, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Reston Hospital Center. A graveside service for Gladys V. Moffett of Warrenton, Va., will be held today at 1 p.m. at Culpeper National cemetery. The funeral procession will leave Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton at 12:15 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret Josephine Banks
Margaret Josephine Banks, 77, of Culpeper, Va., died on Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital.
She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Brandy Station.
Survivors include five children, Evelyn Stanton, Matthew Banks, Dorothy Banks, Milton Banks, Rosemary Banks, all of Culpeper, Va.; one sister, Rosa B. Carter of Buffalo, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; one son-in-law, Rudolph Banks; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Banks; a devoted friend, Frances L. Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church in Brandy Station, Va. at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 11, with the Rev. Terrance Johnson of Madison officiating.
Interment will be in the Hollywood cemetery in Remington, Va.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 12 noon until time of the service at the church. She will lie in state today from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at W.C. Thompson Funeral Home.

Herman ‘Hank’ Henry Bemus Jr.
Herman “Hank” Henry Bemus Jr., 58, of Culpeper, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 29, 1945, in Troy, Ohio, to the late Herman H. Bemus Sr. and Margaret Huecher Bemus.
Mr. Bemus is survived by his wife of 34 years, Joanne Mary Bemus of Culpeper; and three daughters, Jenny Smith and her husband, Craig, of Fredericksburg; Kirstie Gillison of Culpeper; and Stacie Bemus of Culpeper.
Additional survivors include four grandchildren, Tyvanta Gillison, Sara Smith, Kailee Chapman and Zachary Gillison.
Mr. Bemus is also survived by one brother and three sisters, Denton Bemus, Cheryl Corthell, Kathy Burnett, and Christine Farlee; and two stepbrothers and three stepsisters, Richard Bemus, Gretchen Tower, Anita Atkinson, Diane Bemus and Don Bemus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepparents, Richard Bemus Sr. and Helen Alexander Bemus; and two stepbrothers, Robert and Steven Bemus.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at Hank’s home, 600 Rocky Knoll Arch, Culpeper, on Saturday, July 12, at 2 p.m.

Viola Estelle Carpenter
Viola Estelle Carpenter of Washington, D.C., departed this life on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Washington Hospital Center, after a long illness. The third in a family of eleven children, she was born in Culpeper County to the late Clyde and Henrietta Jackson.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Virginia Broadway of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Thomas Jackson and wife Janet of Richmond; three sisters, Carrie Hearns and husband, Joseph, Marie Ferris and husband, Russell, and Helen Lee, all of Culpeper; one sister-in-law, Virginia Cinnamon of Cleveland, Ohio; two nieces, Valerie Gilmore and husband, Edward of Richmond and Tricia Wilson and husband, Jacob, III, of Newport News; three nephews, David Lee of Miami, Florida, Ronald Lee of Phoenix, AZ and Ken Lee of Culpeper; two special cousins, Shirley Miller of Dumfries and Earline Brown of Remington; four great nieces and one great nephew; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Henrietta Jackson; her husband, John Carpenter; three sisters, Maggie and Affie Jackson and Eleanor Hickerson; three brothers, Clyde, John and Beaure’ Jackson; and a grandson, Lenardo Broadway.
A Wake will be held today at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. and funeral services at Good Hope Baptist Church, Culpeper, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Hugh Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope cemetery.

Sadie Lea Durham
Sadie Lea Durham, 93, of Warrenton, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Oak Springs Nursing Home.
She was born Feb. 11, 1910, in Delaware to the late Robert Luther Cooke and Fannie Bell Nichols Cooke.
Mrs. Durham is survived by five children, Eva Marie Menefee, Shirley Ann Pullen, and Rena Mae Jenkins, all of Culpeper; Ann B. Scheckel of Gaithersburg, Md., and Branson Linwood Pullen of Jeffersonton.
Additional survivors include a brother, Carl Cooke of Warrenton; a sister, Edna Cooke of Warrenton; 24 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Osborne Taylor Durham; six brothers, John, Branson, Chris, Jim, George and Dave Cooke; and a sister, Julia Clatterbuck.
A funeral service will held Friday, July 11, at noon, at Found and Sons Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, with Pastor Edward Hawkins officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel.
Interment will follow in Washington Masonic cemetery.

William Henry Hawkins
William Henry Hawkins, 72, of Orange, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Culpeper Regional Hospital.
He was born June 16, 1931, in Boston, Va., to the late Harold Hawkins and Nellie Lillard Hawkins.
Mr. Hawkins was a member of North Pamunkey Baptist Church in Orange and a member of the Mineral Masonic Lodge #331.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Perkinson Hawkins; his sister, Ann H. Deal and her husband, Carroll, of Boston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Thomas Hawkins Jr.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 10, at 11 a.m., at North Pamunkey Baptist Church in Orange with Pastor Jeff White officiating. A Masonic memorial service will immediately follow.
A private family interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to North Pamunkey Baptist Church, or to a charity of your choice.
Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is handling the arrangements.
