Gilbert G. Hill of Spotsylvania died August 1, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Hill was originally from Dexter, Missouri where he served as mayor during the 1950's. In World War II he served in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Quincy. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn, a son, J. Patrick Hill, a daughter, Candace Bell, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Fredericksburg from 7:00-9:00 pm. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church at 7:00 pm.

Dorothy Barfield

Dorothy Annette "Ann" Barfield, 49, of Orange died Thursday, October 17, 2002, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was born October 15, 1953 in Culpeper to the late A. Jack Barfield and Marguerite Heflin Barfield. She is survived by her two sons, Daniel Wade Barfield and his fiance, Jodi Jennings, of Haymarket and Brandon Thomas Barfield, of Orange, four sisters, Frances Racer, of Orange, Eva Brown, Marion Dodson, and Kay Barfield, all of Culpeper, and two brothers, Ed Barfield, of Unionville, and Charles Barfield, of Culpeper. She is also survived by two sisters-in- law, J. J. Barfield, of Orange and Patty Corbin, of Culpeper and two very special friends, Evelyn Cunningham, and Bobby Lane, both of Culpeper. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Tony Barfield. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at 2 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the sevice on Tuesday, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the D & B Memorial Fund, c/o Daniel Barfield, 1607 Permit Ct., Herndon, VA 20170. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Gracie Shifflett, 81 of Locust Grove died Friday August 9, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. She was a loving Christian woman and a member of Flat Run Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Anita Dobbins; three sisters, Dorsie, Jessie Lee and Pearl; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and several step grandchildren. She is the widow of Garfield Shifflett. The family will receive friends at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels, Fredericksburg on Monday, August 12, 2002 from 7:00 to 8:30pm. A funeral service will be held at Wilderness Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at 2:00pm with Pastor Sam Pearson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

George Franklyn Bailey, Jr., 71, of Culpeper died Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born October 18, 1931 in Culpeper County to the late George Franklyn Bailey, Sr. and Lucile Clatterbuck Bailey. Mr. Bailey attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, in Culpeper. Survivors include his daughter, Lecial Bailey and her fiance, James Hamm, and his son, Larry W. Bailey all of Culpeper. Additional survivors include a brother, James Bailey and his wife, Lucy both of Rixeyville, a sister-in-law, Elva Bailey of Culpeper and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Garfield, Forrest, Viola and Beulah. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. A graveside service will be held Friday, December 13, at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Memory Gardens, in Jeffersonton with the Rev. John Miller officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert Hamm, Pete Stover, Amos Finchum, Donnie Hawkins, Jeffery Jenkins and Frances Hodgson. Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Sutphin, Jr. and Charlie Sutphin. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys L. Jenkins, 81, of Sperryville died Friday, August 2, 2002, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born October 20, 1920 in Woodville to the late John Henry Jenkins and Betty Jane Jenkins. Gladys attended Culpeper Free Methodist Church. She is survived by one brother, James R. "Jim" Jenkins of Culpeper, and five sisters, Nina Rose Bane and her husband, Percy both of Slate Mills, Nancy Meredith and her husband, Thomas both of Culpeper, Margaret Weaver of Banco, Ethel Jenkins of Madison and Ruth Leake of Culpeper. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence Jenkins, Gid Jenkins, Henry Barnes Jenkins, John Thomas Jenkins and Andrew Jenkins, and two sisters, Martha Smoot and Marie Smoot. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 5, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. Mark Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tommy Brown, William Leake, Gid Smoot, Richard Jenkins, William Smoot, Jr., Emmitt Aylor, Jr., James Smoot and John Jenkins. Roy "Pete" Owens

Roy Lee "Pete" Owens, 57, of Culpeper died Thursday, August 1, 2002, at his residence. He was born March 28, 1945 in Loudoun County to the late William Benson Owens, Sr. and Pauline Catherine Woodward Owens. Pete was a member of Hazel River Assembly of God since 1993. He is survived by his wife, Ella Irene Owens of Culpeper, two daughters, Sherry Lynn Dodson and her husband, Albert of Fredericksburg and Tina Marie Owens, and five stepchildren, Ella Dovell and her husband, Robert of Bealeton, Mark Burnham of Culpeper, Linda Montalto and her husband, Paul of Madison, WI, Debbie Cadenhead of Richardsville and John Wade Burnham and his wife, Leslie of Culpeper. Additional survivors include fourteen grandchildren, six sisters, Irene Myers and her husband, William of Bealeton, JoAnn Curtis of Sumerduck, Evelyn Gray of Warrenton, Linda Hitt and her husband, Jr. of Boston, Lois Woodward and her husband, Bud of Culpeper, and Donna Schrum and her husband, Terry of Bealeton, four brothers, William B. Owens, Jr. and James E. Owens and his wife, Carol all of Warrenton, Clarence Owens and his wife, Joyce and Ray Owens and his wife, Diane all of Reva. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rocky Lee Owens. The family will receive friends Monday, August 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 6, at 2 p.m. at Hazel River Assembly of God with Pastor Steve Dodson officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens, in Jeffersonton.

Ralston Dennis

Ralston K. Dennis died Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at age 75 at his residence. He was born March 30, 1927 in Leisenring, Pennsylvania to the late Jacob Sidwell Dennis and Nina Bryner Dennis. He was a retired Lt. Col., U.S. Army Engineers and retired Fairfax County teacher. While in the Army he served in Germany, Iran, Korea and Vietnam. While in Korea in the 2nd Infantry Division he received a battlefield commission. He was awarded a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars for valor. Other awards included the Combat Infantry Badge and two Joint Services Commendations. After a total of twenty-four years he retired. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of fifty-years, Pearl Kelly Dennis and sons, Kelly and his wife, Claireen, Craig and his wife, Sharon, and daughter, Diane Hurd and her husband, James. Additional survivors include two sisters, Marie Hazy and Pearl Hallam and one brother, James Dennis. His joy was woodworking and eleven grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Michael Gray officiating. Private burial will be held at Arlington National cemetery. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is in charge of the arrangements.

Andrew Kapcar, Jr.

Dr. Andrew John Kapcar, Jr., 74, of Stafford died on Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and served a fellowship in Nuclear Medicine at Washington Hospital Center. He was preceded in death by his son Todd Andrew Kapcar. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Maxine Kapcar; two sisters Veronica Kapcar and Anna Mae Taylor both of Pittsburgh, Penn; two brothers Albert Kapcar of Marion, OH, and Emil Kapcar of Vero Beach, Florida. A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 19, 2002 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cumberland, Maryland. Pallbearers will be Emil Kapcar, Donald Kniseley, Gary Kniseley, and Jeremy Kniseley. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 2217 Princess Anne Street #106-1F, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Fredericksburg is handling the arrangements.

John Peyton Leake, 61, of Culpeper died at home Wednesday, August 7, 2002, due to cancer. He was born November 23, 1940 in Rappahannock County to the late Fred Leake and Ruby Jenkins Leake. Mr. Leake is survived by his daughter, LeeAnn Farnham and her husband, Richard both of Orange, his girlfriend, Betsy Woodard of Culpeper, two brothers, Charlie Leake and his wife, Linda both of Fredericksburg and Maury Leake and his wife, Dottie both of Marshall and three sisters, Jessie Kelly of Chesapeake, Shirley Vanallen and Alice. Additional survivors include two grandchildren, Christopher and Christine, a brother-in-law, Raymond Tomczak, Sr., a good friend, Frank Lightfoot, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jenkins Leake, two brothers, Leroy Leake and James Leake and two sisters, Ruby Marjorie Stringfellow and Mae Tomczak. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 9, at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Rev. William Blackburn officiating. Interment will follow in Sperryville cemetery. Lester Wayland

Lester Ashby Wayland, 89, of Culpeper passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at Culpeper Regional Hospital after a long illness. He was born August 28, 1912 in Rappahannock County to the late Luther Wayland and Dolly Russell Wayland. Mr. Wayland was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He later served in the South Pacific. When he returned from service he was employed with the Warrenton Hunt Club which he retired from. Survivors include his sisters, Dorothy Williams of Culpeper and Annie Poe of Cary, NC, and a dear friend, Mary Wayland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Chester Wayland, and a sister, Elsie Eaheart. The family will receive friends Friday, August 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 10, at 2 p.m. at Woodville cemetery with Rev. John K. Burke officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Poe, Billy Eaheart, Tim Norman, Earl Whorton, Eddie Wayland, Mike Wayland, Brian Wayland. Mary Katheryn Thornhill Cooper, 76, of Boulder, Colorado died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Boulder Manor Nursing home in Boulder. She was born December 2, 1926 in Catalpa, Virginia to the late Clinton R. Thornhill Sr. and Katherine Settle Thornhill. Mary was a lifelong resident of Culpeper and was employed by Leggett Department Store for many years. She moved to Colorado to be with her family in 1996. Mary is survived by her daughter, Brenda Weakley Tobias, and her husband, Phillip A. Tobias, of Lafayette CO, her granddaughter, Ashleigh N. Tobias, two sisters, Lucy Thornhill Bagwill and her husband, L. Weber Bagwell, and Mrs. Hilda Clore and her husband, John W Clore. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by Brenda's father, Floyd Ashby Weakley, and one brother, Clinton Richard Thornhill Jr. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 9, 2003 from 7-9p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels of Culpeper, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Virginia. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 10, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels of Culpeper, with the Rev. John S. Farrar officiating. Interment will follow at the Culpeper Masonic cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Weakley, Wayne Yowell, Paul Compton, Jim Kovi, Ernie Anderson and Lusby Blackwell.
