Baby Holley

GRETNA - Tyler Canard Holley, 3141 Taylor's Mill Road, died Monday, Aug. 26, 1996, in Virginia Baptist Hospital of Lynchburg.
He was the infant son of Beverly Lynn Holley Jr. and Amy Diane Canard Holley, who survive.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include his maternal grandparents, Wayne and Diane Canard of Gretna; his paternal grandparents, Patricia and Stacey Osborne of Chatham; his maternal great-grandparents, Arthur and Lucille Moore of Gretna, Harrison and Jean Canard of Gretna, and Edna Moore of Welaka, Fla.; and his paternal great-grandmother, Odessa Holley of Callands.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Beverly Lynn Holley.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. today from Zion United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. E. Robert Dunn Jr. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Scott Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Mathena Sr.

Jack Walter Mathena Sr., 67, 131 Bent Creek Road, died Monday, Aug. 26, 1996, in his residence.
Born June 3, 1929, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was a son of Clarence A. Mathena and Margaret Mathena.
He was married to Kiyo T. Mathena, who survives.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Naval Air Station in Norfolk as an aircraft mechanic. He was also a member of the Mason's in Virginia Beach.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Tommy D. Mathena and Ronnie J. Mathena, both of Danville, and Jack W. Mathena Jr. of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Donna A. Cason of Virginia Beach; a brother, the Rev. Clarence Arthur Mathena Jr. of Portsmouth; a sister, Betty Austin of Portsmouth; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

T.C. Dellinger

Thomas Clarence Dellinger, 75, of Route 2, Ridgeway, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1920, in Danville, he was the son of Thomas Carlyle Dellinger and Bessie Overcash Dellinger.
He was married to Mary J. Dellinger, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oakleaf clusters.
He was a Mason, and a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Thomas Kenneth Dellinger of Roswell, Ga.; one daughter, Karen Rowe of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Barbara D. Smith of Danville, and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, William C. Dellinger, and one sister, Frances Black.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Woodrow Giles. Burial will be in Leemont cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.

Garland Dix Jr.

The graveside service for Garland W. Dix Jr., formerly of 10129 N.C. Highway 700, Pelham, N.C., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Rockingham County by the Rev. Michael B. Harrill.
He died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 21, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Garland W. Dix Sr. and Gillie Lillian Gillispie Dix.
He spent most of his life in the Hickory Grove community, and had lived in Durham, N.C., for the past two years due to failing health.
He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. He was retired from Dan River Inc.
He was formerly married to Phyllis Myers Ludwick, who survives. He was predeceased by a son, Steve Albert Dix.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Darlaine Townes of Chatham; two sons, Garland W. Dix III of Durham and Johnny Earl Dix of Pelham, N.C.; a sister, Dorena D. Mills of Ruffin, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Fisher

ALTON - Carl Lenward (Len) Fisher, 68, of Route 1, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 1996, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford, N.C.
Born Aug. 15, 1927, in Halifax County, he was the son of Odell Hudnell Fisher and Cornelia Martin Fisher.
He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna F. Hall of Richmond and Vickey F. Puryear of South Boston; four sons, Carl Lenward Fisher Jr. of Danville; Douglas Raye Fisher of Lynchburg; Kenneth Melvin Fisher of Danville and Lewis Michael Fisher of Alton; three sisters, Margaret F. Anderson of Volens; Katherine F. Hudnell of Roxboro, N.C.; and Francis F. Glass of Crystal Hill; one brother, Charles Fisher of Volens; and seven grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. David Coddington.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, and other times will be at the home of Ruby Fisher, 1016 Grove Ave., South Boston.

June Gentry

June Collins Gentry, 55, of 4636 Whitmell School Road, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for four years.
Born March 11, 1941, she was the daughter of David H. Collins and Edna Virginia Mills Collins.
She was of the Baptist faith, and spent her entire life in Danville.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Gentry Gill of the residence; three sons, Danny Gentry of Providence, N.C.; Alan Gentry of Dry Fork and Dennis Gentry of Danville; two brothers, Henry Collins and Richard Collins both of Danville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family wil receive friends at the residence.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Keith Hare

CASCADE - Keith Lee Hare, 24, of Route 1, Box 1200, died Saturday night, Aug. 31, 1996, at his residence.
Born May 12, 1972, in Danville, he was a son of Kenneth Lee Hare and Judy Hosmer.
He was a graduate of Tunstall High School, and worked in the cutting room at Dan River Inc. for the past year.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Tina McCartney Hare of Aiken, S.C.; his mother of Cascade; his father of Midlothian; one daughter, Elise Hare of Aiken, S.C.; one sister, Tina Marie Lane of Midlothian; two brothers, Kristopher M. Hare of Midlothian; and Phillip Paul Hare of Aiken; and his maternal grandmother, Anna Mead Hosmer of Danville.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.
The family will be at the residence of his maternal grandmother, Anna Mead Hosmer, 1829 Blair Loop Road.

L. Wilson Kendrick

Lemon Wilson Kendrick, 77, formerly of 127 Capri Court, died Sunday morning, Sept. 1, 1996, in Hillhaven LaSalle Nursing Home in Durham, N.C.
Born June 26, 1919, in Callands, he was a son of Jim Lemon Kendrick and Cora Mae Adkins Kendrick.
He spent most of his life in Danville, except for eight years' service in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for Dan River Inc. and later for the U.S. Veterans Administration as a
clerk-typist.
He was of the Holiness faith, and attended Danville Community College; God's Bible College of Cincinnatti; Holmes Bible College of Greenville, S.C., and Baltimore Business College.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Graveside military rites will be performed in Schoolfield cemetery by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicefood Funeral Home.

James Potts

The funeral for James A. Potts, 89, of 705 East Paxton St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home by the Rev. Joseph Northen. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park.
He died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 24, 1906, in Salisbury, N.C., he was a son of Pleasant Potts and Iola Katon Potts.
On March 20, 1926, he was married to Grace Howerton Potts, who died April 17, 1991. He is predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.
He lived in Danville for 61 years. He was employed as a salesperson and owned a operated a collection agency.
He was a former member of the Senior Citizens Club of Danville.
He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Garnett-Norton Fellowship Class, and he also served as an usher.
Survivors include two brothers, Rex Potts of Calvert County, Md., and Raymond M. Potts of St. Petersburg, Fla.
The family will receive friends at the home of Lydia Jennings, at 733 Tuscarora Drive.

Marie Shannon

The funeral for Marie York Shannon, 74, of 449 Clarkson Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Walter D. Graham III. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in the hospital for one day.
Born Nov. 5, 1921, in Danville, she was a daughter of William L. York and Hattie Smiley York.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area. Prior to retirement, she worked as a legal secretary in the law firm of Earl Garrett.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was active in the church's Susannah Wesley Circle and the Conley Bible Class.
On Feb. 23, 1946, she was married to Louis Winston Shannon Sr., who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Louis W. Shannon Jr. of Richmond; one daughter, Anne S. Austin of Danville; two sisters, Edna Y. Covington of Danville and Pauline Y. Gregory of Hampton; and five grandchildren.

Yvonne Barrow

KINGSPORT, TENN. - Yvonne Bishop Barrow, 71, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in the residence of her sister, following a lengthy illness.
A native of Roda, Va., she was a daughter of Pat and Allie Bishop.
She had formerly resided in Southern Pines, N.C., before coming to Kingsport in 1994.
She was a member of Southern Pines United Methodist Church. She also attended Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Louise Kern of Kingsport; and three brothers, W.D. Bishop of Castlewood, Va., James L. Bishop of Kingsport and Gerald C. Bishop of Elyria, Ohio.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward F. Barrow; and by a brother, John Kelly Bishop.
The funeral will be conducted 8:30 p.m. Sunday from Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport by Dr. James Royston. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday in Mountain View cemetery in Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
