Flossie Davis

Flossie Sue Cassada Davis, 82, 209 Wheatley Road, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, at Piney Forest Nursing Home. She had been in declining health for several months.
Born Feb. 7, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of David C. Cassada and Madie Jones Cassada.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She had lived in the Danville area all of her life.
She was married to Joseph S. Davis, who died in April, 1980. She was also predeceased by five brothers.
Survivors include a son, Joseph W. Davis of the home; a daughter, Betty Coleman of Danville; six sisters, Waverly C. Scearce, Eloise C. Hudgins, Cecil C. Walker, Lois C. Oakes, Doris C. Perkins and Virginia C. Simpkins, all of Danville; two brothers, Douglas 'Dee' Cassada and Russell Blair Cassada, both of Danville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Joe Beck.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 209 Wheatley Road.
Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Garland Dix Jr.

Garland W. Dix Jr., formerly of 10129 N.C. Highway 700, Pelham, N.C., died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, in Danville Regional Hospital.
Born Jan. 21, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Garland W. Dix Sr. and Gillie Lillian Gillispie Dix.
He had lived most of his life in the Hickory Grove community, and in Durham, N.C. for the past two years because of his health.
He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. He was retired from Dan River Inc.
He was formerly married to Phylliss Myers Ludwick, who survives. He was predeceased by a son, Steve Albert Dix.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Darlaine Townes of Chatham; two sons, Garland W. Dix III of Durham and Johnny Earl Dix of Pelham, N.C.; a sister, Dorena D. Mills of Ruffin, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Rockingham County by the Rev. Michael B. Harrill.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Raymond Flynn

HAMPTON - Lt. Raymond Joseph Flynn, U.S. Army retired, 73, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 1996.
He was a native of New York and been a resident of Hampton since 1970.
He was a member of the Hampton Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Association, where he was selected in 1994 as Trooper of the Year.
He was a member and president-elect of the Old Point Comfort Exchange Club and the 1992 recipient of the Book of Golden Deeds.
A veteran of World Wr II, Korea and Vietnam, he received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Master Parachutist Badge.
He was a volunteer at Langley Air Force base Hospital and was the outstanding volunteer of the quarter.
Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Martin of Newport News; a son, James Flynn of Danville ; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Langley Air Force Base Main Chapel by the Rev. Lawrence Gosselin. Interment will take place Wednesday 3 p.m. in Hampton National cemetery, Phoebus Section.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. today at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton.

'Tinnie' Gilbert

GRETNA - Ester 'Tinnie' Gilbert, 74, of 308 Chaneylane, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 20, 1922, in Roanoke, she was a daughter of James Palmer and Martha Coles Palmer.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hurt.
She was married to James Gilbert, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by one son, Wallace Palmer.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Callands of Temple Hill, Md., Helena Gilbert of Suitland, Md., Vickey Stuart of Washington, D.C. and Jessie Hill of Altavista; four sons, Charlie Gilbert, Wayne Gilbert and Ralph Gilbert, all of Gretna and James Henry Gilbert of Adelphi, Md.; four sisters, Helen Senior of Washington, D.C., Belausa Monroe of Columbus, Ohio, and Adell Harris of Danbury, Conn. and Shirley Harris of Gretna; three brothers, Early Monroe of Long Island, Robert 'Bob' Monroe of Gretna and Morgan Monroe of Landover, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones. Burial will be in the Gilbert family cemetery on State Road 686 in Gretna.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Potts

James A. Potts, 89, of 705 East Paxton St., died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 24, 1906, in Salisbury, N.C., he was a son of Pleasant Potts and Iola Katon Potts.
On March 20, 1926, he was married to Grace Howerton Potts, who predeceased him on April 17, 1991. He is predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.
He lived in Danville for 61 years. He was employed as a salesperson and owned a operated a collection agency.
He was a former member of the Senior Citizens Club of Danville.
He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Garnett-Norton Fellowship Class, and he also served as an usher.
Survivors include two brothers, Rex Potts of Calvert County, Md. and Raymond M. Potts of St. Petersburg, Fla.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home by the Rev. Joseph Northern. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Lydia Jennings, a niece, 733 Tuscarora Drive, in the Tuscarora Farms community.

Robert Reid Jr.

Robert Emmitt Reid Jr., 78, of 908 Coral Court, New Bern, N.C., died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, in Craven Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 14, 1918, in Akron, Ohio, he was a son of Robert E. Reid and Gladys Monroe Reid.
He lived in Henry County for 20 years. He was retired from E.I. DuPont.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a prisoner of war in Germany during the war, and he received the Air Medal, Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War medal.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He was married to Katherine F. Reid, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two daughters, Jeanne Reid of Holly Springs, N.C. and Katherine J. Kamminga of Gaithersburg, Md.; two sons, Ken Reid of Ridgeway and Bill Reid of Roanoke; two sisters, Dot Williams of Austin, Texas and Marge Taylor of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday from Roselawn Burial Park by the Rev. Dwight Berry.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in New Bern.
Roselawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wilbert Coleman Jr.

ALBERTA - Wilbert Coleman Jr., 47, 5284 Flat Rock Road, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, in his residence.
Born Aug. 11, 1949, in Alberta, he was a son of Wilbert Coleman Sr. and Beatrice Coleman, who survive.
He was married to Marie B. Coleman, who survives.
He was self-employed as a truck driver.
In addition to his mother of Alberta, his father of Freeman, and his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Genese Coleman and Kyla Coleman, both of the residence, Mamie Hill and Leslie Rawlings; two sons, Basheer Abdulmusawwir and Corey Garner; and two sisters, Diane C. Hughes of Danville and Cassandra Coleman of Portugal.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Piney Grove Baptist Church in Dolphin by the Rev. Fredrick Bagley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Piney Grove Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.
Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.

Anner Dixon

Anner Bell Dixon, 55, 872 Paxton Ave., died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 7, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Dorsey Leftwich and Georgia Walton Cade, who survives.
She was married to George Dixon, who predeceased her.
She was a retired employee of Tultex Co. in Martinsville.
In addition to her mother, survivors include three daughters, Elois Thomas, Sania Luck and Sandra Cobbs, all of Danville; and two sisters, Loraine Walton and Elizabeth Harvey, both of Trenton, N.J.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Divens Jr. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at 2748 Medical Center Road, in the Anderson Heights community on Route 882.

L. Wilson Kendrick

The funeral for Lemon Wilson Kendrick, 77, formerly of 127 Capri Court, will be conducted 4 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Graveside military rites will be performed in Schoolfield cemetery by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.
He died Sunday morning, Sept. 1, 1996, in Hillhaven LaSalle Nursing Home in Durham, N.C.
Born June 26, 1919, in Callands, he was a son of Jim Lemon Kendrick and Cora Mae Adkins Kendrick.
He spent most of his life in Danville, except for eight years' service in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for Dan River Inc. and later for the U.S. Veterans Administration as a
clerk-typist.
He was of the Holiness faith, and attended Danville Community College, God's Bible College of Cincinnati, Holmes Bible College of Greenville, S.C., and Baltimore Business College.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Barrett

GRETNA - Johnny Calvert Barrett, 95, of Gretna, died Monday, Sept. 2, 1996, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born March 30, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Henry Barrett and Alice Martin Barrett.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lizzie Emerson Barrett, and by his second wife, Sis Bennett Barrett.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Midway Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances Barbour of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Thomas Barrett of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Charles Swicegood.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Russell Davis

Russell Davis, 70, 402 Plum St., died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two years of declining health.
Born April 6, 1926, he was a son of Robert Davis and Inez Keaton Davis.
On June 11, 1949, he was married to Aileen Moore Davis, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he graduated from George Washington High School. He owned and operated Davis Wholesale Candy Business for 40 years. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asian Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, American Theatre Ribbon, and Victory Medal.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three sons, Russell Lee Davis Jr., Barry Gene Davis, and Kim Ray Davis, all of Danville; two brothers, Claude Davis of Danville and Robert W. Davis of Lewiston, Ind.; a sister, Janette Corkam of Richmond; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a brother, Clyde A. Davis, and by a sister, Barbara Gary.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Freddie Vicks. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
