SMELLEY
Alvin Elmo Smelley, 89 of Carson, died at his home April 25, 2001. Mr. Smelley was born in Mecklenburg County, Va., a son of the late Burthold Alvin and Elva Mildred Strange Smelley. He was a lifetime farmer, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, a charter member of Carson Ruritan Club and a member of Edwards Masonic Lodge No. 308 A.F.& A.M. of Stony Creek. Preceded in death by his son, Alvin Carleton "Bud" Smelley, he is survived by his wife, Gertrude Falk Smelley of the home; four daughters, Elva S.
Williams of Carson, Va., Betty June Pratt of Williamsburg, Va., Mary Ellen Pratt and Peggy S. Lewis of Carson; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and 3 nieces. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morris & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Livesay officiating. The interment will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Annie Thomas, of Powhatan, passed away April 26, 2001. She is survived by two sons, Steve Henry and Eddie Henry; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer, and Steven and one great-granddaughter, Whitney. Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Maury Cemetery.

Kevin E. Walker, age 23, departed this life Sunday, April 22, 2001. WELCH
Laura Eliza Cotton Welch of Richmond, a retired architect, died peacefully at home on April 25, 2001 after a long illness. She was born in Plattsmouth, Neb. on November 6, 1917. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, James W. Welch; her son, Dale E. Welch of Richmond; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, W. William Welch and Ruth Welch of Sarasota, Fla., Thomas M. Welch of Richmond and Margaret Cotton of Laguna Hills, Calif. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Paul
Carter Welch of San Francisco, Calif. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Owen White Cotton and Allen Beeson Cotton. Laura was a direct descendent of the Puritan minister Rev. John Cotton. She was a long time resident of the Fan district and a member of St. James's Episcopal Church. Laura was active in the field of architecture all of her adult life. She was associated with many well known national architects throughout the West, the Panama Canal Zone and the East Coast as she travelled with her husband in his military career. At the time of her retirement, she was associated with Moseley-Hening Associates, Inc. of Richmond. She designed the Victory Arch in Newport News and was the project manager for the Terminal Building expansion at Richmond International Airport and the Reynolds Metals Office Building. She was also a writer and genealogist and recently published two books on family histories. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Smith Williams, born May 3, 1909, formerly of Roxboro Rd., Durham Co., died early Thursday at Cleveland Regional Hospital in Shelby. She currently resided on Pinkney St. in Shelby. Mrs.
Williams was born in Durham, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Pleasant Smith, Sr. She was a writer and pianist and was a North Carolina spelling champ in 1922. Mrs.
Williams was preceded in death by three brothers, Linwood, James and Harold; and one sister, Edith. Mrs.

Banks, born March 10, 1912, founder of Richmond Summer Theater, owner and operator of Richmond Stage Lighting, retired as Mosque manager, and recipient of the Sherwood Reeder Award from the city in 1977, died March 30, 2001. Kathryn G. Brini, 59, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 30, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Ralph O. Brini; her father, William V. McNemar; her son, daughter-in-law, and their two children, Robert G. May Jr., Christine May, Ryan and Brandon May; her daughter, son-in-law, and their two children, Lisa Donkle, Donald R. Donkle II, Mitchell and Jarrett Donkle. She is also survived by two sisters, one brother, three nieces, two nephews, and her husband's four children and five grandchildren. Kathryn was a college graduate and an office manager for CAPS/Shore & Azimov.
