Marvin Powell

CASCADE - Marvin Frank Powell, 62, 421 Black Bird Place, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1933, in the Mt. Valley community of Henry County, he was a son of Raleigh Powell and Alma Myrtle Hiatt Powell.
He had lived in Cascade for the past 22 years. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by American Furniture Co. in Martinsville for 15 years. He was also of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Frank Powell of Martinsville and Michael Eugene Powell of Danville; three daughters, Myrtle Alley of Collinsville, Brenda Powell Moore of Axton, and Katherine Powell Ladota of Martinsville; a sister, Dora Mae Doss of Eden, N.C.; four brothers, Lewis Powell and Grady Powell, both of Greenville, S.C., Harrison Powell of Martinsville, and Sam Powell of Cascade; and nine grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Eugene Powell.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his niece, Carolyn Childress, on State Road 952 in the West Fork community.

John Wimbush

John Wayne Wimbush, 47, 216 Church St., died Monday, Sept. 23, 1996, in North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Born Jan. 5, 1949, in Halifax County, he was a son of Martha Goode Wimbush, who survives, and Willie H. Wimbush.
He was a member of Bethelhem Temple Holiness Church.
In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include four brothers, Harold L. Wimbush of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Aubrey Wimbush of Asheville, N.C., Leroy Wimbush of Danville, and Clyde Wimbush of Arlington; three sisters, Florence A. Wimbush of Bassett, Emma J. Wimbush and Rosa Shelton, both of Danville; and his maternal grandmother, Emma Goode of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Bethelhem Temple Holiness Church by Elder Matthew Scott. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The remains will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Howertown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willard Blanks

Willard Jennings Blanks, 71, 259 N. Woodberry Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past 10 years.
Born Dec. 16, 1924, in Danville, he was a son of George Blanks and Ella Wicker Blanks.
On Dec. 15, 1946, he was married to Lillian Reynolds Blanks, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in the D.O.T. Lab until his retirement. He was a member of Woodberry Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marines.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Michael Willard Blanks of Williamsburg; and a sister, Margaret B. Schulze of Petersburg.
There will be no funeral because the body will be donated to the State of Virginia Anatomical Program.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Morgan Crowder

Morgan Melvin Crowder, 70, 3620 Westover Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1926, in Mount Airy, he was a son of John Melvin Crowder and Anne Dalton Crowder.
He was married to Margaret Ganey Crowder, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a member of Westover Baptist Church. During World War II, he served in the Army, where he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Charles Gibson of Pelham, N.C., four daughters, Elizabeth Ann Pruitt of Roxboro, N.C., Pamela Kay Gill of Brosville, Christine Collins of Danville, and Rebecca Marie Bohin of Birmingham, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Doug Barber, the Rev. Bob Vermillion, and the Rev. Ron Pruitt. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Charles Cuthbertson

ATLANTA - Charles G. Cuthbertson, 36, 504 Rock Stone Drive, died Monday, Sept. 23, 1996, in Gradie Hospital.
Born March 20, 1960, in New Rochelle, N.Y., he was a son of Nannie Mae Cuthbertson, who survives, and Chuncey Melvin Cuthbertson.
In addition to his mother of Chatham, Va., survivors include a brother, Jerry L. Cuthbertson of Atlanta; a half-brother, Ronald McKent of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; and a sister, Stephanie Palmer of Atlanta.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Rosebud Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Ross. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. today at Howerton Funeral Home in Chatham, Va. The family will receive friends at North Main Street, in Chatham, Va.

Vickie Dalton

Vickie Scearce Dalton, 44, 520 Meadowview Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 1996, in her parents' residence, following several months of declining health.
Born Sept. 5, 1952, in Danville, she was a daughter of C. Waverly Scearce and Gearlene Franklin Scearce, who survive.
On Oct. 29, 1971, she was married to Lee Dalton, who survives.
She spent her entire life in the Danville area, where she was employed by Leggett Corp. as a secretary prior to her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by Dr. Leroy Clack. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her parents, 320 Meadowview Drive, State Road 872.

Shadrick Hundley

Shadrick Hundley, 90, 929 Stoney Mill Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 25, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William N. Hundley and Lula Cobbs Hundley.
He was married to Willie Hundley, who survives.
He was a member of Silver Creek Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was self-employed as a farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a stepson, Bishop James E. Martin of Camden, N.J., and a stepdaughter, Evangelist Gladys Woodson of Cascade.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Silver Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Booker George. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The body may be viewed 4-8 tonight at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Louise Jones

Louise Moon Jones, 82, 157 Powell Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, in her residence.
Born May 11, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James T. Moon and Mollie Oakes Moon.
She was married to Jerry K. "Casey" Jones, who died Aug. 2, 1984.
She spent her entire life in Danville, and was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry T. Jones, Ronald L. Jones, and Ray B. Jones, all of Danville; four grandchildren; and 1 one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Richardson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his son, Ronald Jones, 1489 Claiborne St.

Golden Mayhew

Golden Roby Mayhew, formerly of 147 Kenilworth Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following two months of illness.
Born March 20, 1902, in the Renan community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Eppy Roby and Mollie Starkey Roby.
On Nov. 7, 1923, she was married to Edwin Mayhew, who died Sept. 30, 1973.
Prior to moving to Danville 25 years ago, she lived in Altavista and Gretna. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of West Main Baptist church, where she attended the Winsome Sunday School class.
She is survived by a son, Edwin Earl Mayhew of Sumter, S.C.; two daughters, Othelia M. Shelhorse of Danville and Elizabeth M. Regen of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be held 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the George W. Mayhew Family cemetery in Renan.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Shelhorse, 116 Fenton Place.

Stanley Yusko

RICHMOND - Stanley Yusko, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996.
He was married to Lula Motley Yusko, who survives.
He was a member of Ridge Baptist Church. During World War II, he served in the Army.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Y. Hicks of Woodbridge; a son, Stanley C. Owen of Mount Union, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday from Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 Parham Road. Interment will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park in Danville.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at at the funeral home.

Franklin Adkins

Franklin Ledford "Mullin" Adkins, 54, of 486 Norwood Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1942, in Danville, he was the son of Ledford Adkins and Virginia Grant Adkins.
He lived most of his life in Danville.
He worked several years for J. Clint Fleming Trucking Co. until six years ago.
He was a Baptist. He also served in the Army.
Surviving is his mother, Virginia G. Adkins, of the residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Cross

BLAIRS - The graveside service for Clyde Cross, 80, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley and the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr.
He died Thursday, Sept. 26, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, after a nine year decline in health.
Born June 22, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Estelle C. Mason.
On July 6, 1967, he was married to Mary Carter Cross, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the West Fork community of Pittsylvania County, and had lived in Blairs for the past 20 years. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist Tabernacle.
In addition to his wife, survivors include five step-sons, Roy Wilson Jr. of Dry Fork, Herman S. Wilson, William E. "Chubby" Wilson, Danny Ray "Bill" Wilson, and Bobby E. "Sam" Wilson, all of Blairs; two step-daughters, Mary Ann Wilson Allen of Blairs and Delores Jean Wilson of the residence; 16 step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence on U.S. 29 North, near the Hatcher Center.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
