Mallie Crews

GRETNA - Mallie Hammock Crews, 87, 2745 Graves Bridge Road, died Thursday, June 13, 1996.
Born Dec. 11, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Homer Hammock and Lillian Pruitt Hammock.
She was predeceased by her husband, William M. Crews.
She was a member of Pittsville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Louise Myers and Leola Finney, both of Sandy Level; a sister, Angie Matherly of Gretna; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Pittsville Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Chris Brown, the Rev. Kirby Phillips and the Rev. Ira Yeatts. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, in Gretna, and other times at the residence of a daughter, Leola Finney, 2749 Graves Bridge Road.

Wallace Glass

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Wallace Dudley Glass, 62, 203 Chicken Farm Road, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, in Morehead Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of June and Lottie Dallas Glass.
He spent his entire life in Rockingham County and was employed by the State of North Carolina as an aid to the blind.
Survivors include a son, Samuel D. Glass of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Elizabeth G. Rosario of Winston-Salem; a sister, Rebecca G. Ramsey of Albemarle; three brothers, Gene H. Glass of Reidsville, James C. Glass of Greensboro, and William J. "Bill" Glass of Eden; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Citty Funeral Home, in Reidsville, by the Rev. LeRoy Joyce. Burial will be in Mt. Herman Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Rebecca Payne

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Rebecca F. Payne, 94, of Atlantic City, N.J., died Friday, June 7, 1996,in Egg Harbor.
Born Oct. 21, 1901, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Donald Ferguson and Molly Grasty Ferguson.
She was employed by New Jersey Sanatorium as a food service worker.
She is survived by a brother, Isaac Grasty of Lovington, Va.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Cunningham and Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Ralph Cypress. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Rebecca Wilson, 116 Rockford Place, Danville, Va.

Weldon Payne

DRY FORK - Weldon Hill Payne, 84, 2600 Whitmell School Road, died Thursday, June 13, 1996, in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital of Harrisonburg. He had been in declining health for the past year.
Born March 9, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Patrick Henry Payne and Ella Boaz Payne.
On June 11, 1938, he was married to Eliza Bradner Payne, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he owned and operated Payne's Service Station on Route 41, until his retirement. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda P. Scarce of Dry Fork, and Suzanne P. Auckerman of Bridgewater; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel. Burial will be in the Boaz Family cemetery on Route 41.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Grady Owen

Grady Alva Owen, 64, Box 3616 Highway 29 North, died Friday, June 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 21, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Richard Owen and Ola Hammock Owen.
He was married to Ada Easome Owen, who died March 16, 1992.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he was employed by Dan River Inc. in the No. 4 card room, before retiring in 1992. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Clayton A. Owen and Kenny R. Owen, both of Danville; three daughters, Peggy Owen Powell of Eden, N.C., Bonnie Owen Cox of Reidsville, N.C., and Debra Owen Holley of Irvin, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the Doss Family cemetery, in Museville, by J.D. Hunt III. The family will receive friends at the residence of Kenny R. Owen, 25 Milton Ave.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Pannell

Robert Lee Pannell, 71, of Route 3, Danville, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 31, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Payton and Ambrose Pannell.
He was married to Mary Sue Pannell, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by John W. Daniel Construction Co.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, Herbert Pannell of Roanoke, Robert Lee Pannell Jr. and Gary Pannell, both of Danville, Curtis Pannell of Halifax, and Master Sgt. Hubert Pannell of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Brenda P. Poole and Bernice P. Giggetts, both of Danville; two brothers, John Henry Pannell of Danville, and Raymond Pannell of Trenton, N.J.; four sisters, Nancy Ferrell of Danville, Willie Mae Johnson of Atlantic City, N.J., Bertha Miller of Washington, D.C., and Mollie Graves of Altavista; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from St. Paul Outreach Center by Bishop Walter J. Anderson. Burial will be in Floral Hill Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Howerton Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Holland H. Gravely

Holland Howard Gravely, 69, formerly of Danville, died Saturday in his home in Harrisonburg.
Gravely graduated from George Washington High School and served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity.
He worked at American National Bank in Danville and retired as vice-president of Dominion National Bank. He was a life member of the Kiwanis.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Jean Simpson; one son, Holland Howard Gravely Jr. of Richmond; two daughters, Carol Gravely Driver of Timberville and Dorothy Gravely Mahanes of Richmond; two brothers, Henry Gravely of Danville and Bill Gravely of Martinsville; also three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Henry and Meredith Gravely in Danville and on Friday at the family home in Harrisonburg from 7-8:30 p.m.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.

Sarah Harrison

The funeral for Sarah Marshall Harrison, 71, of 480 W. Main St., will be conducted 4 p.m. today from Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. David Henry. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 122 Rockford Place.
She died Saturday, June 15, 1996, at the residence of her daughter. She had been in declining health for one year.
Born March 7, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Harry C. Marshall and Laura Moore Marshall.
She spent her entire life in the Danville/Pittsylvania County area. She was employed at M&M Furniture until her retirement because of illness.
Previously, she and her husband owned and operated Harrison Printing and Telephone Answering Service until his death. She was an active member of Kentuck Baptist Church.
She was married to Vann B. Harrison, who died Aug. 5, 1977.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura Elizabeth Harrison of Danville; two sisters, Barbara M. Shields of Danville, and Jean M. Reynolds of Wilson, N.C.; and one brother, Harry C. Marshall Jr. of Martinsville.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Poindexter

GRETNA - Ruby Poindexter, 79, died Sunday in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 21, 1916, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Edward Douglas Poindexter and Mary Smith Poindexter.
She was employed by an insurance company before retiring. She was a member of the Thomas Carter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Southall-Vess. Interment will be in the Gretna Burial Park.
The family will be at the former residence of Estelle P. Scruggs on Vaden Drive in Gretna.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry H. Tanksley

Jerry Hylton Tanksley, 49, of 1105 Wilkerson Road, Ringgold, died Sunday in the Duke Medical Center.
Born Feb. 26, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Otis Tanksley and Mary Carmichael Tanksley.
He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County where he was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a tire builder. He was a member of the Ringgold Baptist Church. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was stationed in Germany.
Survivors include his wife of the residence, Patricia S. Tanksley; two daughters, Andrea Lynn Tanksley and Leigh-Anne Hylton Tanksley, both of the residence; five brothers, James Otis Tanksley of Keeling, Ronald Edward Tanksley and Reless E. Tanksley, both of Danville, Bobby Franklin Tanksley and Clifton Vernail Tanksley, both of Ringgold; one sister, Lois Tanksley Terry of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Carl E. Burger.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillie Boles

JAVA - Lillie Shelton Boles, 76, Route 1, Java, died Saturday, June 15, 1996, at the residence of her son in Winfield, W.Va.
Born May 28, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Raleigh Martin Shelton and Lillie Ola Abbott Shelton.
She was predeceased by her husband, Willie Franklin Boles.
She was a member of Millcreek Baptist Church.
Survivors include include four sons, Aubrey F. Boles of Winfield, W.Va., the Rev. Floyd M. Boles of Clemmons, N.C., L. Warren Boles of Providence, N.C., and Walter W. Boles of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Edna B. Scruggs of Newport News, and Musa B. Shelton of Chatham; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Millcreek Baptist Church by the Rev. James G. Bullock Jr. and the Rev. Floyd M. Boles. Burial will be in the Shelton Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, in Chatham, and other times at the residence.

Holland H. Gravely

A graveside service for Holland Howard Gravely, 69, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of Danville, will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Mountain View cemetery.
He died Saturday, June 15, 1996, in his residence.
He was married to Ruth Jean Simpson, who survives.
