Rebecca Davis

Rebecca Roach Davis, 86, of 13 Laurel Ave., died early Saturday morning, June 29, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline of health for many years.
Born March 31, 1910, in the Riceville community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Norman Roach and Ella Edwards Roach.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Lee Davis, who died on July 2, 1982.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area where she worked as a smash hand in the No. 4 B Weave at Dan River Inc., before retiring. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Fred E. Davis of Danville; two brother, Sammy Roach of the Riceville community and James W. Roach of Clinton, Md.; seven sisters, Ruth Weatherford of Halifax, Willie Hutcherson and Sue Hankins, both of Mount Airy, Velma Gregory of the Riceville community, Mary Barbour of Martinsville, Lizzy Dalton of Newport News and Geneva Burnette of Beltsville, Md.; and two stepgrandsons and two step great-grandsons.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday from the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The familly will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and at other times will be at the residence of her son, Fred, at 315 Greenwich Circle.

John Hayden

John Henry Hayden, 78, of 10005 Martinsville Highway, died Wednesday, June 26, 1996, in the Duke University Medical Center where he had been a patient for eight days. He had been in declining health for the past seven months.
Born March 23, 1918, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of John H. Hayden Sr. and Annie Izetta Scrivener Hayden.
He had lived in Pittsylvania County for the past several years after his reitrement from the Metropolitan Police Department with 28 years of service and the rank of sergeant. He was a member of Brosville United Methodist Church and the Metropolitan Police Association.
He married Louise Oakes Hayden on May 20, 1966.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Judy Gibson of Wheaton, Md., and Karen Schiarettia of Huntingtown, Md.; three sons, Randy Hayden of Danville, Walter J. Hayden of Placitas, N.M., and John H. Hayden III of Alliance, N.C.; two sisters, Mildred Faber of Summerville, S.C., and Nerr Cunningham of Forestville, Md.; and 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Saturday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Richard McDowell.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel handled arrangements.

Drury Thompson

ATLANTA - Drury Blair Thompson, 77, of 4248 Glen Devon Drive, died Friday, June 28, 1996.
A native of Danville, Va., he was the son of James Samuel Thompson and Ethel Reynolds Thompson.
After graduating from Davidson College in 1941, he entered active military duty in the South Pacific during World War II. He was decorated with the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. During the Korean War, he taught at the infantry school and served as assistant judge advocate general in Fort Benning, Ga.
He was graduated from Duke University Law School in 1948. After working in private practice in Raleigh, N.C., he joined the legal department of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Atlanta. He became vice president and general counsel of Southern Bell in 1974 a position he held until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, the Commerce Club and the Cherokee Club.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Jones Thompson; two sons, Drury Blair Thompson Jr. of Bradenton, Fla., and James Reynolds Thompson of Decatur, Ga.; a daughter, Terry Elizabeth Thompson of Raleigh, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Spring Hill.
A funeral will be conducted 11:30 a.m. at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home of Atlanta is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Vass

Clarence Reid Vass, 81, of 248 Ferry Road, died Saturday, June 29, 1996.
Born May 18, 1915, in New River, he was a son of Isaac Spencer Vass and Lucynthia Vass Vass.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Ivey Singleton Vass. At the time of his death, he was married to Mattie Holt Vass.
He was retired from Dan River Inc. after 47 years. He was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Betty Jones of Clinton, N.C., and Rebecca Evans of Richmond; two sons, Reid Vass of Lynchburg and Douglas Vass of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Bitula Porter of Danville; eight children; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Other times, the family will be at 41 Ashlawn Drive and 248 Ferry Road.

Vivian Smith

CHESAPEAKE - Vivian Delores Jones Smith, 64, of 2803 Meadow Wood Court West, died Saturday, June 29, 1996, at Portsmouth General Hospital. She had been in declining health for six months and in the hospital for two days.
Born Dec. 24, 1931, in Danville, she was the daughter of Hugh Simmons Jones and Irene Motley Jones.
She was a homemaker and spent her life in Danville, Newport News, Chesapeake and Gloucester.
She was of the Baptist faith.
On Aug. 19, 1951, she was married to Archer Worsham "Archie" Smith, who died Dec. 19, 1972.
Survivors include two sons, William C. Smith and Firth C. Smith both of Gloucester; two daughters, Irene S. Shaw of Easley, S.C., and Jessica S. Atwood of Brunswick, Ga.; one brother, Lynnwood H. Jones of Emporia; one sister, Kathy J. Betterton of Nathalie; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Lillian Hooker

Lillian Norris Hooker, 79, 240 Lady Astor Place, died Monday, July 1, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 25, 1917, in Phillipsburg, Pa., she was a daughter of James Hervey Norris and Mary Loding Norris.
She was married to Dr. John Williams Hooker, who predeceased her in 1959.
She had lived in Danville since 1950.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as an instructor of nursing.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as the first woman elder. She was also active in numerous civic organizations and in God's Storehouse.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Timothy H. Hooker M.D. of Danville, and Daniel N. Hooker of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a brother, William H. Norris of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Louise Duttry of Belfair, Washington; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, Dr. Timothy H. Hooker, 243 Parkview Place.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Estelle Powell

BROOKNEAL - The funeral for Estelle Rigney Powell, 90, 306 Virginia Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth A. Fleet. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park at Chatham.
She died Saturday, June 29, 1996, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 24, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Albert Sidney Rigney and Annie Amos Rigney.
She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Her husband was Samuel Curie Powell, who is predeceased.
Survivors include one daughter, Doris Anne P. Conner of Brookneal; one sister, Frances R. Marlowe of Callands; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Doris Anne P. Conner, 306 Virginia Ave., Brookneal.

Edna Pritchett

CHATHAM - Edna Lee Pritchett, 55, 874 Sheva Road, Chatham, died Sunday, June 30, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
BorN Aug. 18, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Edward Carter Barksdale, who survives, and Katherine Robertson Barksdale.
She was married to Sterling Pritchett, who survives.
In addition to her husband and her father, survivors include two sons, Henry Pritchett of Gretna, and John Pritchett of Augusta, Ga.; a daughter, Vickie Pritchett of Chatham; a foster son, Gary Farmer of Chatham; a foster daughter, Cynthia Farmer of Chatham; a brother, Ernest Barksdale of Augusta, Ga.; and three sisters, Ruth Barksdale and Dorothy Jones, both of Danville, and Patricia Barksdale of Chatham.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Greater Triumph Baptist Church in Chatham by the Rev. H.G. McGhee. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Emily Rangeley

LYNCHBURG - Emily Laraine Rangeley, 96, of Route 3, Lynchburg, died Monday, July 1, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Bluefield, W.Va., she was a daughter of Emmett and Mabel Kutz Bailey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Nelms Rangeley.
Survivors include a son, Robert N. Rangeley of Danville; a daughter, Jean R. Haberle of Rustburg; a sister, Gladys French of Bluefield, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Cecil Hedgepeth. Burial will be Friday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the chapel.

Bobby Sizer

MIDLOTHIAN - Bobby Lee Sizer, 58, of Midlothian, died Sunday, June 30, 1996.
He was a son of Cecil Sizer, who survives, and Helen Suit Sizer.
He served in the U.S. Army, discharged as a second lieutenant.
In addition to his father of Midlothian, survivors include two daughters, Lee Ann S. Braughton of Fairfax, and Cynthia L. Sizer of Richmond; a brother, Kenneth Sizer of St. Louis; and two sisters, Catherine Sizer Harris of Chester, and Linda Del Prince of Davie, Fla.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian. Burial will be in Dale Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
