John Morgan

RINER - John Curtis Morgan, 84, of Riner, died Sunday, July 28, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital.
He had lived in the Riner community for the past 25 years. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Burlington Textiles for 29 years. He was also a member of Montgomery County Moose Lodge No. 1470.
He was predeceased by his wife, Florence Wood Morgan.
Survivors include a son, John C. Morgan Jr. of Minco, Okla.; a daughter, Katie M. Altizer of Riner; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, in Christiansburg, by the Rev. Dr. Ray Penn and Charles Kemfer. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mary Bailess

SPOUT SPRING - Mary Fitzgerald Bailess, 75, died Monday, July 29, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 31, 1921, she was a daughter of Walter Fitzgerald and Cora Moorefield Fitzgerald.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Lacy Bailess, and by a son, Calvin Mac Bailess.
Survivors include a son, Alvin Jack Bailess of Lynchburg; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Robinson Funeral Home, in Appomattox, by the Rev. Mike Jones. Burial will be in Spout Spring Baptist cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Virginia Gatewood

COLUMBUS, GA. - A graveside service for Virginia Parrish Gatewood, formerly of 254 Grove Park Circle, Danville, Va., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
She died Sunday, July 28, 1996, in St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of Leonard Carson Parrish and May Aron Parrish.
She spent her entire life in Danville, and had moved to Columbus in June.
She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
In 1943, she was married to James Lewis Gatewood, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Carol G. Ballin of Columbus; two sisters, Beatrice P. Payne of Danville, Va., and Kathleen P. Everette of Greenwood, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Moore

HURT - Edna Mitchell Moore, 83, 1108 Moore's Drive, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Dec. 15, 1912, in Ruffin, N.C., she was a daughter of David and Minnie Nuckles Mitchell.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Thomas Moore.
She was a member of Motley United Methodist Church. She was also the former owner of Edna's Ceramics.
Survivors include a son, W.T. "Tommy" Moore Jr. of Hurt; three daughters, Jewell Bailess, Sarah Ridgeway, and JoAnn Mayhew, all of Hurt; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Motley United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ray Eure and Lory Brafford. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Finch & Finch Funeral Home, in Altavista, and other times at the residence.

Jack Farmer

GRETNA - Jack Dempsey Farmer, 61, 1340 Taylors Mill Road, died Monday, July 29, 1996.
Born Nov. 28, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Elsie Roach Farmer, who survives, and Rothie Smith Farmer.
He was married to Shirley Osborne Farmer, who survives.
He was a farmer and a member of Gretna Church of God of Prophecy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother of Gretna, survivors include a daughter, Jackie Farmer of Gretna; and two sisters, Marie Osborne and Shirley Davis, both of Gretna.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Colbert-Moran Funeral Chapel, in Gretna, by the Rev. Albert Moser and the Rev. Lynn E. Lloyd. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

William Farrar

VIRGINIA BEACH - William Carter Farrar, 92, formerly of 205 Westhampton Ave., Danville, died Monday, July 29, 1996, in the Virginia Beach Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 6, 1903, in Danville, he was a son of Joseph Carter Farrar and Beatrice Farrar.
He was married to Dorothy Myers Farrar, who survives.
He attended the University of Virginia and Lynchburg College. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Chesapeake and Potomac Phone Co. for 40 years.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. He also served on the vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church in Charleston, W.Va.
He served on the Danville City Beautiful Committee, and was a past member of the Danville Golf Club.
In addition to his wife of Virginia Beach, survivors include a daughter, Caroline Farrar Forlines of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Green Hill cemetery by the Rev. James Mathieson. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home.

Jessie Harris

GRETNA - Jessie Willard Harris, 63, 2897 Hodnett Road, died Sunday, July 28, 1996, in Altavista.
Born Jan. 20, 1933, in Appomattox County, he was a son of Pearlie Harris and Annie Fitzgerald Harris.
He was married to Emma Jean Harris, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Lane Co. in Altavista.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three brothers, Pearlie Harris Jr. and Herbert L. Harris, both of Danbury, Conn., and Joe Lewis Harris of Gretna; and five sisters, Edna Mae Haynes of Lynchburg, Nannie Will Hurt of Keysville, Florence Gracie Harris of the residence, Beatrice Marie Hunt of Hurt, and Jo Ann Monroe of Gretna.
He was predeceased by a sister, Fannie Monroe, and by a brother, Jim Harris.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hurt, by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home of Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Perrow

Irene Ingram Perrow, 83, 1413 Westover Drive, died Monday, July 29, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born April 21, 1913, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Moulton T. Ingram and Cora Lee Carter Ingram.
She was married to Willie Carter Perrow Sr., who died October 1971.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a nurse at Memorial Hospital. She was also a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dorsey W. Perrow and Willie C. Perrow, both of 1413 Westover Drive; two daughters, Frances Ann Morefield of Bristol, Tenn., and Judith D. Perrow of Danville; five brothers, Wayne Ingram, James Ingram, and Moulton Ingram, all of Danville, Eugene Ingram of Greensboro, N.C., and Ronald Ingram of Richmond; six sisters, Bessie Anderson of Danville, Lala Wade of Providence, N.C., Geneva Hawker of Sutherlin, Elizabeth Carter of Hampton, Lolene Adkins and Nancy Brown, both of Bassett; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Hylton Lawrence Jr. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

James Emerson

DRY FORK - James Washington Emerson, 68, 685 Emerson Road, died Wednesday, July 31, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 17, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Aylor Emerson and Lessie Holley Emerson.
On Aug. 15, 1953, he was married to Stella Howerton Emerson, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he was employed by Mount Hermon Land Co. as a home builder.
He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, a trustee and a member of the church's Administrative Council.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post No. 325.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Jason Edward Emerson of Willow Springs, N.C.; a foster daughter, Dorothy Hammock Pritchett of Danville; four sisters, Nora E. Evans and Nell E. Crowder, both of Dry Fork, Frances E. Allen of Greensboro, N.C., and Margaret E. Hylton of Danville; three brothers, Frank J. "Buck" Emerson, William A. Emerson, and I. Ray Emerson, all of Dry Fork; one grandchild; and two foster grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence A. Emerson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Hopewell United Methodist Church by the Rev. Clay Knick. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9:00 tonight at Hopewell United Methodist Church, and other times at the residence, 685 Emerson Road on the Emerson Brothers Farm on State Route 41.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Hall

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Lucille Miller Hall, 70, 402 Eighth St., and formerly of Pittsylvania County, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in the University of Virginia Hospital.
Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James "Jim" Miller and Sallie Wray Miller.
She was married to Rev. Dr. E.G. Hall, who survives.
She was educated in the Pittsylvania County Public School System, and attended Lynchburg Seminary and College. She was employed as a teacher in Pittsylvania County for a brief time. She was also a homemaker.
Prior to leaving Pittsylvania County, she was a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church in Gretna. After moving to Charlottesville, she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as first lady of the church and as a member of the Ministers' Wives Association.
She was also vice president of the Green Leaf Garden Club in Charlottesville.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Rachael Clark of Edison, N.J.; three sisters, Minnie Edwards of Roanoke, Virginia Glass of Java, and Catherine Coleman of Danville; five brothers, James Miller of Irvington, N.J., Gordon Miller, Jack Miller, and Latane Miller, all of Gretna, and David Miller of Petersburg; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Naamon Miller, John Miller, and Alsee Miller.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Mount Airy Baptist Church in Gretna by the Rev. R.P. King. Burial will be in the Miller Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Charlottesville, and other times at the residence.
Miller Funeral Home of Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Dick Savage

Richard Edwin "Dick" Savage, 67, 1214 Greenwood Drive, died Wednesday, July 31, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following seven weeks of declining health.
Born Aug. 11, 1928, in Danville, he was a son of George N. Savage Sr. and Ruth Trowbridge Savage.
On Jan. 30, 1953, he was married to Sallie Motley Savage, who survives.
He spent his life in Danville. Following 47 years of employment at Dan River Mills, he retired as a supervisor.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the Finance Committee.
During the Korean War, he served in the Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Ricky E. Savage of Raleigh, N.C., and Randy D. Savage of Marietta, Ga.; four sisters, Hope S. Calvert and Ann C. Savage, both of Danville, Betty S. McCartney of Petersburg, W.Va., and Ruth S. Lanier of Buena Vista; and three brothers, Joe D. Savage of Charlotte, N.C., George N. Savage Jr. of Ringgold and Robert T. Savage of Goldsboro, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell. A private interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.
