Chester Carmichael

The funeral for Chester Norwood Carmichael, 75, 802 Hughes St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dean A. Lamphere, the Rev. Deano Lamphere and the Rev. Bill J. Soyars. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery, where military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
He died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996, in his residence, following seven months of declining health.
Born July 22, 1921, in Danville, he was a son of John Tim Carmichael and Mary Alice Scearce Carmichael.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed by Dan River Inc. in the maintenance department as a lead man.
He was first married to Helen Henderson, who died Sept. 1, 1982. He was later married to Audrey Hyler, who survives.
He was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 1097, the D.A.V. Archer T. Gammon Post No. 19, and the VFW Post No. 647.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded four purple hearts and the bronze star. He was also a prisoner of war for five months and was in the Normandy Invasion. He also served in the Second (Indian Head) Division Infantry.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Carmichael Garrett of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Sandra Carmichael Grubbs of Sutherlin; a brother, John G. Carmichael of Danville; two sisters, Doris White of High Point, N.C., and Mary Scott of Williamston, N.C.; three grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild.
He was predeceased by a brother, Harold E. Carmichael.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

David Daniel

David Lanier Daniel, 77, died Aug. 7, 1996, at his residence in Shenandoah.
Born Sept. 25, 1918, in Dry Fork, he was the son of David F. Daniel and Ida Delphia Collins Daniel.
He was owner of Strickler's Hardware Store in Shenandoah until he retired.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a charter member of VFW Avis O. Comer Post 8613. He also was a member of the Grove Hill-Newport Ruritan Club. He served as a deacon for the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He married Elizabeth "Libby" Frier on July 27, 1946.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Larry W. Daniel of Front Royal; one brother, Ralph M. Daniel; two sisters, Elizabeth Atkinson and Stella Shelton, both of Chatham; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m.Friday at Shenenandoah Holiness Church by the Rev. Ralph Green. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church.
Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah is handling arrangements.

Willie Dodson

JAVA - Willie Reid Dodson, 82, 1401 Java Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1996, in Woodview Nursing Home of South Boston.
Born Nov. 9, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Raleigh Dodson and Josephine Jones Dodson.
He was married to Daisy Dodson, who survives.
He was a retired farmer. He was also a member of Shockoe Baptist Church, where he served as past chairman of the deacon board and as a former Sunday school treasurer and teacher.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Conner of the residence and Earnestine Platt of Havana, Fla.; a brother, Phillip Dodson of Java; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. G.H. Pass. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home of Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Martin

Susan Elizabeth Gammon Martin, 66, Route 1, Box 1468, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 1996, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following two weeks of declining health.
Born June 27, 1930, in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Claude B. Gammon and Jenny Scearce Gammon.
She spent most of her life in the Bachelors Hall community and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Ann Martin of Milton, N.C.; two sisters, Dora Marie Gammon and Jean Gammon Scearce, both of Brosville; and two brothers, Jasper "Runt" Gammon and Paul "Pete" Gammon, both of Bachelors Hall.
A graveside service was conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday from the Scearce and Gammon Family cemetery by the Rev. Bernard White and the Rev. Lester Peters.
Swicegood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

David "Poochie" Robinson

David "Poochie" Robinson, 64, 605 Greenwich Circle, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 12, 1932, in Danville, he was a son of Eloyd Robinson Sr. and Hallie Link Robinson, who survives.
He was married to Saint Clara "Dump" Robinson, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He was also a member of Bennett Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, he is survived by a brother, Eloyd Robinson Jr. of Washington, D.C.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Bennett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Hairston. Burial will be in Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery in Providence, N.C.
The body may be viewed 4-8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gerald Smith

DRY FORK - The funeral for Gerald W. Smith, 54, 164 W.I. Powell Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mike Hearp. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 4, 1942, in Danville, he was a son of John Thomas Smith and Lucille Oakes Smith, who survive.
He was employed as an independent truck driver. He was also of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Minks of Hampton; two brothers, Ronald T. Smith of Dothan, Ala., and Kenneth G. Smith of Glen Ellyn, Ill; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Hallie Tillotson

BUFFALO JUNCTION - Hallie Hite Tillotson, 86, of U.S. 58, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter of Stephen Bedford and Emma Virgianna Owen Hite.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lurie C. Tillotson; and by a son, Donald Gray Tillotson.
She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. She was employed by the Clarksville Police Department for seven years as a dispatcher. Prior to that job, she worked for Lakesleep Wear and Burlington Industries.
Survivors include a son, Irvin Ray Tillotson of Buffalo Junction; a daughter, Glenna T. Lingafelt of Gretna; two sisters, Josie Jones of Nelson and Lottie Boyd of South Boston; a brother, Arthur Hite of Red Oak; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday from Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Rodney Baker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville.

Ezra Apple

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Ezra G. Apple, 73, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1996, in Jacksonville.
Born June 10, 1923, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Robert S. Apple and Mary Morris Apple.
He was married to Geneva Apple, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the Army, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.
Before moving to Florida in 1975, he owned and operated R.S. Apple and Son Plumbing and Heating. He was a NASCAR official for 18 years and a Cub Scout leader. He was also a member of American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and V.F.W.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Michael Apple of Jacksonville; a daughter, Portia A. Adkins of Danville, Va.; a brother, Clifton Apple of Naples; two sisters, Torlonia A. Crouch of Dry Fork, Va., and Shelvie A. Hamlett of Woodbridge, Va.; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Bertry G. Apple.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the home of his daughter, 210 Robinwood Place.

Lois Brooks

Lois Tucker Brooks, 73, 129 Beavers Mill Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996, in Stratford Health Center.
Born Aug. 22, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Robert Tucker and Emma Logan Tucker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fletcher Brooks.
Survivors include a brother, Willie C. Tucker of Danville; and a sister, Virginia Koger of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Willie Tucker, 129 Beavers Mill Road.

Hueard Lewis

VIRGINIA BEACH - Hueard Thomas Lewis, 88, 2916 Shipps Corner Road, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, at Heritage Hall in Virginia Beach.
Born July 12, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Lewis and Osie Newby Lewis.
He was married to Elaine D. Lewis, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by T&T Oil Company in Danville as manager.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepdaughter, Martha Hamlett of Virginia Beach; two stepsons, Ronnie Hamlett of Virginia Beach and Jerry Hamlett of Roper, N.C.; two sisters, Louise Talbott and Pricie Whitt, both of Danville; a brother, Otis Lewis of Burlington, N.C.; and three stepgrandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Luther Lemon. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home.
