Sandra Deshazo

Sandra Kay Deshazo, 29, 327 Grant Street, Apt. 2, died Thursday, April 25, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 24, 1969, in Danville, she was a daughter of Jessie Tucker and Delores Deshazo Tucker, who survive.
In addition to her parents, survivors include two children, Wendy Deshazo and Colby Deshazo, both of Danville; four sisters, Elaine Tucker, Stacey Tucker, Tracey Tucker, and Michelle Thompson, all of Danville; and one brother, Jessie Tucker Jr., of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from Mt. Sinai Glorious Church by the Bishop A.R. Linder. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her mother, 719 East Paxton St., Danville.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roger Ferrell

SOUTH BOSTON - Roger E. Ferrell, of Route 1, Halifax, died Saturday, April 27, 1996, in Berry Hill Nursing Home of South Boston.
Born Jan. 15, 1914, in Halifax County, he was a son of Earnest and Emma Wilson Ferrell.
He was married to Mattie V. Ferrell, who survives.
He was employed by J.P. Stevens until his retirement.
He was also a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Roger E. Ferrell Jr., Edward Ferrell, and Sherman Ferrell, all of Halifax; four daughters, Marie Garner of South Boston, Nannie Emma Childress of Jersey City, N.J., Virginia Mann of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Linda Simon of Mt. Laurel; two sisters, Margarette Margraves of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Louise Washburn of Washington, D.C.; 19 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Mountain Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Arthur E. Crews. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Howerton Funeral Home, in Chatham, is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Knick

Raymond L. Knick, 65, 119 Dublin Court, died Sunday, April 28, 1996, in the N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, following three weeks of being in the hospital.
Born June 24, 1930, in Danville, he was a son of VanBuren Knick and Ethel Posey Knick, who survives.
He was married to Patricia K. Knick, who survives.
While spending his entire life in Danville, he was a self-employed merchant. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond.
He also served in the Army in Germany.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post 1097.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include one son, VanBuren Knick of Richmond; one daughter, Elizabeth K. Brooks of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and one brother, Allan E. Knick of Danville.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jackie N. Knick.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. W. Clay Knick.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tressie "Juanita" Reynolds

Tressie "Juanita" Y. Reynolds, 59, 331 Slaughter Ave., died Sunday, April 28, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 8, 1936, in Childress, Texas, she was a daughter of Tressie Yarbrough and Thomas Yarbrough, who survives.
She was married to Billy G. Reynolds, who survives.
She was employed by Pocket Change. She was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband and father, survivors include three sons, Jacky Reynolds of Danville, Buddy Virden of Tularosa, N.M, and Eugene Virden of Delrio, Texas; one daughter, Judy Virden Adkins of Hatch, N.M.; four sisters, Barbara Hyde and Wanda Boyce, both of Alamogordo, N.M, Elaine Bayes of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jeanette Yarbrough of Deming, N.M.; and two brothers, Alfred Yarbrough and Jimmy Yarbrough, both of Alamogordo, N.M.
She was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Yarbrough.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn. Burial will be in Alamogordo, N.M.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Dr. Landon Spradlin

Dr. Landon Burdett Spradlin, 70, 122 Hedrick Drive, died Sunday, April 28, 1996, in his residence.
Born Aug. 2, 1925, in Newnan, Ga., he was a son of Landon Copeland Spradlin and Kathleen Pitts Spradlin.
He was married to Caroline Holler Spradlin, who survives.
He received degrees from Hardin-Simmons University, in Abilene, Texas, and from New Orleans Theological Seminary.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
He was also a minister and teacher at Hargrave Military Academy, where he served in numerous positions. Prior to coming to Hargrave Military Academy in 1962, he served as chaplain at Fork Union Military Academy.
He served as pastor of Riceville Baptist Church for four years. He also served as interium pastor of Gretna Christian Church and served at Chatham Christian Church for six years.
He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church.
He was a former member of Chatham Lion's Club and of the Danville-Pittsylvania County Flying Club.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Rev. Landon C. Spradlin of Spring Garden, and Bryan B. Spradlin of St. Mary's, Ga.; one sister, Sarah S. Johnson of Clearwater, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Chatham Baptist Church by the Rev. Julian P. Griffin and the Rev. Michael Macon. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, in Chatham, and other times at the residence.

Dr. Ruth Charity

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Dr. Ruth Harvey Charity, formerly of Danville, Va., died Saturday, April 27, 1996, in a nursing home in the Washington, D.C., area.
Born April 18, 1924, in Danville, she was a daughter of the Rev. C.C. Harvey and Annie Lovelace Harvey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald K. Charity.
She attended Danville Public Schools and Howard University Liberal Arts and Law Schools.
She and her husband started Pagents Unlimited Inc.
She was the first African-American woman elected to the Danville City Council. She was also the first woman appointed to the Virginia State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.
She was a member of numerous organizations, including A.K.A. Sorority Inc., the Order of the Eastern Star, The League of Women Voters, the YWCA, the National Organization for Women and the American Association of University Women.
She was also a national officer of The Chums Inc., and served on the National Council of Negro Women.
She was a member of High Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include one step-son, Khris W. Charity of Md.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from the chapel of L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Home, in Danville, by the Rev. Jerome Morris. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The remains may be viewed 6:30-9:00 tonight at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Louise Harris, 820 Piney Forest Road, Danville.

Izena Davis

Izena Leigh Davis, 98, 634 Gay St., died Sunday, April 28, 1996, in her residence.
Born April 6, 1898, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of James and Mildred Leigh.
She was predeceased by her husband, Berkley Davis.
She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Brilliant Star Lodge of United Order of Tents.
She worked as a domestic.
Survivors include one son, Issac Davis of Danville; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from the chapel of L.H. Brooks and Bro. Funeral Home by the Rev. Haywood Gray. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The remains may be viewed this afternoon at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nolie Goad

GRETNA - Nolie Mae Goad, 95, of Gretna, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in the Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 29, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Albert Sydney Goad and Ida Dalton Goad.
She was a member of Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include six nephews, Raymond Goad, Edward Goad, Percy Goad, Ralph Goad, and Burke Goad, all of Gretna, and Ray Goad of Evington; and three nieces, Diane Scott of Altavista, Carolyn Meadows of Lynchburg, and Mable Hedrick of Gretna.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Lloyd Goad, Russell Goad, Hampton Goad and Charlie Goad; and one sister, Effie Goad.
The funeral will be conducted 4:30 p.m. Thursday from Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Raymond Goad and Elder Marvin Brumfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, in Gretna, and other times at the residence of Mable Hedrick, 2189 Brights Road, Gretna.

Dr. Landon Fuller

Dr. Landon Edward Fuller, 92, of the Stratford House, and formerly of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 19, 1903, in Danville, he was a son of Sallie Morrison Fuller and Dr. Louis E. Fuller.
He was married to Marian Camper Fuller, who died April 17, 1996.
As a graduate of Lynchburg College, he received his masters degree from the University of Virginia, and his doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina.
He was employed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute as an English professor and also as director of admissions until he retired in 1967 after 34 years of service.
He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and O.D.K., and also of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was also a member and past president of the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.
He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by the Rev. Donald L. Wright. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight in the Evergreen Room at the Stratford House.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Hinton

Hazel Collins Hinton, 85, formerly of 112 Longview Drive, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following two years of declining health.
Born Jan. 13, 1911, in Keysville, she was a daughter of Wesley Thomas Collins and Helen Rutledge Collins.
She was married to Walter Lyon Hinton, who died November 1993.
While living in the Danville area for the past 63 years, she was employed by Dan River Mills in the Weave Room for 35 years, until her retirement.
She was a member of Cool Springs Christian Church in Keysville, and attended Longview Friends Church for the past 40 years.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Collins Dix, and two brothers, Edwin Collins and Thomas Collins.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Ray. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Anne Hinton Jones, 4301 Horseshoe Road at Bachelors Hall.
