Gladys Matthews

Gladys Holcombe Matthews, 71, a resident at Piney Forest Health Care Center, and formerly of 3556 Westover Drive, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, following nine months of declining health.
Born Aug. 16, 1924, in Danville, she was a daughter of Ben Holcombe and Elizabeth Hutchens Holcombe.
She was married to John S. Matthews Jr., who died in 1995.
While spending most of her life in the Danville area, she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the Sewing Room for 30 years, until her retirement in 1986.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda M. Burton of Axton, and Cheryl M. Smith of Va. Beach; one son, David Allen Matthews of Danville; two sisters, Dura Holcombe of Durham, N.C., and Frieda Brown of Easley, S.C., and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Richard McDowell.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Linda M. Burton, 1683 Peach Orchard Road, Axton, on State Road 851 in the Brosville community.

Thurman Russell

Thurman Francis Russell, 61, 1554 Claiborne St., died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 8, 1934, in St. Louis, he was a son of Thomas and Martha Barton Russell.
He was married to Callie Pillow Russell, who survives.
He was employed by Corning Inc., until his retirement. He also served in the U.S. Army.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Cindy R. Haley of Danville, and Karen R. Haynes of Cana; one sister, Opal Landgraf of St. Louis; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.
He predeceased by two sons, Keith Russell and Gerald "Jerry" Russell.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pillow, 14 Silver Creek Road (Road 868).

Dudley Anderson

Dudley Anderson, 62, 225 Campbell St., died Wednesday, April 1, 1996, at his residence.
Born Aug. 24, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lossie Anderson and Carrie Edmonds Anderson.
She was married to Betty Bruce Anderson, who survives.
He was employed by Laramore Construction Co. He was also a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three brothers, Junior Anderson, James Anderson, and Willie Anderson, all of Danville; and three sisters, Shirley Harris, Marie Farmer, and Bessie Pound, all of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Laurel Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. James Cabell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Claude Banks

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Claude Daniel "Bud" Banks, 64, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Canton, N.C., he was a son of Ernest Luke "Chuck" O'Conner and Jessie Parker Banks O'Conner, who survives.
He was married to JoAnn S. Banks, who survives.
He was employed by Hidden Hills Bowling Alley as a manager.
He was a lifetime member of the Sertoma Club and also a member of the Redman of America. He was also a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include five daughters, Connie Lynn Davidson of Omaha, Neb., Anna Elizabeth Banks of Spartanburg, Cheryl Sandabol of Greenville, N.C., Carol Ann Allen and Debra Alderson, both of Topeka, Kan.; three sons, Johnny Banks of Loganville, Ga., Daniel Lee Banks of Diego Garcia, Timothy Ray Banks of Boston Spa, N.Y.; one brother, Floyd Carrol Banks of Indian River, Fla.; one sister, Lynn Roberts of Tennessee; a number of grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a number of foster children.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, in Spartanburg. The funeral will be conducted at a later date from the First Church of the Nazarene in Spartanburg.
J.F. Floyd Mortuary in Spartanburg is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Inge

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Willie Hugh Inge, 47, of Washington, D.C., died Saturday, April 27, 1996, in the Washington Hospital Center.
Born June 27, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Donald Edward Inge and Regener Crews Inge.
He was married to Rosalind R. Inge, who survives.
He was a graduate of Southside High School,and spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed by the U.S. Government.
He was a member of Silver Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Rashaad Inge of the residence; one daughter, Eboni Inge of the residence; four sisters, Emma M. Keyes and Inez I. Martin, both of Camden, N.J., Classie I. Tarpley and Mary L. Harris, both of Danville, Va.; and two brothers, Edward C. Inge of Camden, N.J., and Roy D. Inge of Danville, Va.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at 171 Epps St., Danville, Va.
Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Baby Johnson

Bailey Nicole Johnson, four months, 409 Southhampton Ave., died Thursday, May 2, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 8, 1995, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Allen Johnson and Jennifer Ellen Brown.
In addition to her parents, survivors include her maternal grandparents, Bobby W. Brown of Danville, and Beth Geho of Chatham; and her paternal grandparents, Barry Johnson of Danville, and Karen Jordan of Conway, S.C.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Mount Herman Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence, 409 Southhampton Ave., Apt. 4.

Carrie Matkins

Carrie Lee Gray Matkins, 87, formerly of 134 Stokesland Ave., died Thursday, May 2, 1996, in the Riverside Health Care Center, following three years of declining health.
Born May 2, 1909, in Danville, she was a daughter of Dozier Herbert Gray and Virginia Lee Dalton Gray.
She was married to Chesley B. Matkins, who died Sept. 13, 1980.
While spending all of her life in Danville, she was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. in the weave department for 35 years, until her retirement.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty L. Gregory and Kittie L. Setliff, both of Danville; seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Gilmore Setliff.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of a daughter, Betty L. Gregory, 133 Stokesland Ave., Danville.

Naomi Ramsey

ANNADALE - Naomi Farmer Ramsey, 100, of Annandale, died Thursday, May 2, 1996, in Leewood Nursing Home in Annandale.
Born July 10, 1895, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Abner J. Farmer and Lucy Ferguson Farmer.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reuben Ramsey.
She was a member of First Christian Church, in Falls Church.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Tate of Danville, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from the Ramsey Family cemetery, in Chalk Level, by the Rev. A.A. Blanks.
Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, in Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Mike Barrineau

Delama Paul "Mike" Barrineau, 167 Riverview Drive, died Friday, May 3, 1996, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 8, 1921, in Camilla, Ga., he was a son of William Samuel Barrineau and Dollie Duncan Barrineau.
He was married to Kathleen Barrineau, who survives.
He was employed by Winn-Dixie as a store manager for 47 years, until his retirement. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corp.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Paula Barrineau of Newport News; two sons, Eddie Mathews of Henderson, N.C. and Durwood Mathews of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Freddie Vicks, with military honors being given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at 2131 North Main St.

Mildred Covington

RINGGOLD - Mildred Ann Covington, 54, of Ringgold, died Friday, May 3, 1996, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Ballard L. Myers and Cora Lee Laws Myers.
She was married to Archie Daniel Covington, who survives.
While spending her entire life in Pittsylvania County, she was employed by Jonbil Co. for 16 years.
She had recently started working at Wal-Mart.
She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sisters, Louise M. Hawkins of Ringgold and Eunice M. Bibee of Henderson, N.C.; and one brother, Percy Myers of Ringgold.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Hobert Myers, Carson Myers, and Tony Myers.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. John H. Meadows. Burial will be in the Covington family cemetery in Keeling.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, Rt. 1, Box 880, Ringgold, on Clarks Mill Road, off Route 58 East.

Dorothy Mitchell

MARTINSVILLE - Dorothy Battle Mitchell, of Kings Grant Retirement Community, Martinsville, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996, at her residence.
Born April 22, 1918, in Chattanooga, Tenn., she was a daughter of Lee H. Battle and Nannie Howerton Battle.
She was married to E. Harrison Mitchell III, who died Feb. 14, 1990.
She was a graduate of Sullins College in Bristol.
After moving to Danville in 1961, she became the owner and operator of Danville Travel Service until 1972. She moved to Martinsville in 1993.
She was a former member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, and a current member of First United Methodist Church in Martinsville.
Survivors include a step-son, Richard H. Mitchell of Danville; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Landis of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mrs. Dan Holiday of Memphis, Tenn.; and one step-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the memorial chapel of Townes Funeral Home by Dr. Wasena F. Wright Jr., the Rev. Donald Seely, and the Rev. Thomas J. Holden III. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Monday.
