Garnett Link

PETERSBURG - Dr. Garnett William Link, 70, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, at Southside Regional Medical Center.
A native of Danville, he was a son of Oscar Nathaniel Link and Lilly Shreve Link.
He was married to Frances W. Link, who predeceased him.
He was a charter member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Petersburg.
He was a graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He held many positions as a urologist for Southside Regional Medical Center for 25 years, and as Chief of Staff at Hiram Davis Medical Center, Central State Hospital for 10 years. He was a member of the Urological Association, the Southside Medical Association, the Virginia Medical Society and the College of American Surgeons.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Garnett W. Link of Durham, N.C. and Robert N. Link of Chesterfield; four daughters, Sallye L. Anthony and Nancy L. Alexander, both of Chesterfield, Margaret L. Bojduj of Pismo Beach. Calif., and Sylvia L. Kelly of Monterey; two brothers, Thomas F. Link and Acree S. Link, both of Newport News; one sister, Myrtle L. Houchens of Petersburg; and 10 grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Saturday at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, by the Rev. Richard Haney.
E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Thompson

Mary Rith Lea Thompson, of 524 Franklin St., died at her residence.
Born in Danville, she was a daughter of the Rev. Thomas H. Lea Sr. and Malinda Wade Lea.
She was a lifetime member of Beulah Baptist Church. She was chairman of the deaconess board, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Senior Choir and other auxiliaries.
She was a retired Danville Public School System employee.
She was married to Jethro Thompson Sr., who predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Pearl T. Kirby of Randallstown, Md. and Kathy T. Siler of Greensboro, N.C.; a son, Jethro Thompson Jr. of Danville; a sister, Katie L. Bass of Suffolk; and two grandchildren.
A wake will be conducted 1:30 p.m. and the funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Irving. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Beulah Baptist Church, 918 Monument St. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 524 Franklin St.

Dale Braniger

MOUNT HERMON - Dale Braniger, 60, of 3309 Green Hill Drive, died Friday, May 24, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1935, in Akron, Ohio, he was a son of Edna Martha Braniger and John Oakley Braniger.
He was a former employee of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include a sister, Janet Tamson of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery, Akron.
The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Monday at the residence.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Ensminger

NIANTIC, Conn. - John F. Ensminger, 72, of 73 Flanders Road, died Saturday, May 11, 1996, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.
Born Jan. 8, 1924, in Chicago, he was the son of Fred and Clara Kleibenstein Ensminger.
He was married to Katherine Hyde Hedberg Ensminger, who died June 11, 1990.
He received his bachelor's degree from Brown University and attended the New England Conservatory of Music. He was formerly the southeast regional sales manager at Scovill Manufacturing Co. in Waterbury.
In Danville, Va., he was president and chief executive officer of Anderson Brothers Co. Later, he was a senior industrial engineer for United Nuclear in Uncasville. He retired in 1989.
He served in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II, and was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
He was a member of St. John Episcopal Church and was a former member of the Danville, Va., Rotary Club.
He is survived by three sons, John F. Ensminger of Williamsburg, Va.; Jeffery Alan Ensminger of Durham, N.C.; James Andrew Ensminger of Niantic, and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by by a sister, Charlote Bergamo.
The funeral was conducted May 15 in Niantic, with burial in Union cemetery.
Thomas L. Neil & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, Niantic, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Johnson

Mary Rena Williams Johnson, 84, of 1575 Richmond Blvd., died Friday, May 24, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lottie White and David Williams. She was married to Willie Green Johnson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one brother, Bernard Williams of Danville; five sisters, Emma Hutchings and Willie Bertha Womack both of Danville, Rebecca Motley of Providence, N.C.; Katherine Keares of Philadelphia, and Elaine Anderson of Washington, D.C.; four foster children, Ernestine Henry of Blairs, Phyllis Hairston, Daryl Johnson and Melissa Johnson, all of Greensboro, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Mine Creek Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, Blairs, by Elder Bernard Boston. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of Emma Hutchings, 115 Johnson St.
Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Kepley

GRETNA - Edith Turner Kepley, 77, of 302 Vaden Drive, died Sunday, May 26, 1996, at her home.
Born June 10, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Louis Turner and Sallie Howell Turner. She was married to Robert Kepley, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, and a retired cafeteria worker with the Pittsylvania County School System.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara K. Taylor and Joyce K. Vasser both of Gretna, and Linda K. Irvin of Roanoke; three brothers, Martin L. Turner of Gretna, Ray T. Turner of Rocky Mount and Rex G. Turner of Dry Fork; two sisters, Elizabeth T. Rorer and Irene T. Johnson both of Gretna; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert Louis Kepley.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home by the Rev. Bob Dunn. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Elwood Anderson

GRETNA - Lowell Elwood Anderson, 72, Hick's Road, died Monday, May 27, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 3, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ira Daniel Anderson Sr. and Lula Saunders Anderson.
He was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Whitaker of Cincinnati, and Christine Dickens and Worliece Douglas, both of Durham, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, in Gretna.

Hallie Compson

Hallie Coppridge Compson, 200 Cambridge Drive, died Sunday, May 26, 1996, in her residence.
Born April 30, 1911, in Richmond, she was a daughter of James T. and Elizabeth Spangler Coppridge.
She was married to Ray Michael Compson, who survives.
Compson and her husband owned and operated a tri-state chain of photographic studios. She was previously employed by Thalhimer Bros. of Richmond.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church and a number of other service organizations.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, R.M. Compson Jr. of Danville; a daughter, Elizabeth C. Wardrup of Richmond; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be conducted Wednesday from Mt. View cemetery.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Dallas Jr.

EAST ORANGE, N.J. - The funeral for Charlie W. Dallas Jr., 77, was conducted Saturday, May 25, 1996.
Born Aug. 30, 1919, in Cascade, Va., he was a son of Charlie and Mary Peaa Dallas.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rose Edgar Dallas.
Survivors include five daughters, one son, six sisters, nine brothers, and six grandchildren.

James Devins

James Curtis Devins, 83, 2526 N. Main St., died Monday, May 27, 1996, in Roman Eagle Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 5, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George D. Devins and Jennie Devins.
He was married to Annie M. Devins, who survives.
He was a self-employed farmer.
In addition to his wife of Axton, survivors include a son, James S. Devins of Silver Springs, Md.; a daughter, Jeanette Devins of Lorton; a brother, Joe Douglas Devins of Callands; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Tarpley's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Devins Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed 4-8 tonight at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Geneva Horne

SOUTH HILL - Geneva Howell Horne, 70, died Sunday, May 26, 1996, in Community Memorial Health Center.
She was married to Roscoe H. "Bill" Horne, who survives.
She was a retired food worker for Mecklenburg County Public Schools.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three stepdaughters, Mary Elizabeth Carpenter of Richmond, and Ann Gilbert and Hazel Parcell, both of Hopewell; two stepsons, Herman Horne Jr. and Russell Horne, both of Hopewell; two sisters, Jean H. Harrison and Hazel H. Gover, both of Danville; 10 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Oakwood cemetery in South Hill. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home of South Hill.

Eugene Polk

Eugene Polk, 44, 507 Locust Lane, died Saturday, May 25, 1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 1, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Wilson and Rosa Stone Polk.
He was an associate of Newman's Janatorial Service, prior to a decline in health.
Survivors include six brothers, Isiah, Willie, Linwood, Wade, Stanley, and Russell Polk, all of Danville; and four sisters, Shirley Fitzgerald, Clara Polk, Rosemary Polk, and Linda Polk, all of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Greater Triumph Baptist Church by Dr. H.G. McGhee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
