Jesse Davis

Jesse Dillard Davis, 74, of Route 1, Vernon Hill, died Saturday, June 1, 1996, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond.
Born July 13, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Nathan Davis and Lessie Milam Davis.
He was married to Mildred G. Davis.
He was a member of the Countyline Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 342 of Volens.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a son, Jesse James Davis of Baytown, Texas; three daughters, Joan Felvey of Richmond, Joyce Barker of Ringgold and Janet Conner of Halifax; five sisters, Maggie Compton of Sutherlin, Margaret Lewis of Vernon Hill, Martha Satterfield of Halifax, Mildred Lewis of Henderson, N.C., and Mamie Christianbury of Durham, N.C., two brothers, Tommy Davis of Sutherlin and Nathan Davis of Danville; and seven grandchildren, one step grandchild and two great grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Countyline Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. William Trimyer and the Rev. Bob Watts. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with military rites.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9 and other times at the residence at Route 1, Vernon Hill.

Robert Franks

Robert Earl Franks, 77, of 630 Parker Road, died Friday night, May 31, 1996, at his residence.
Born in Danville on May 20, 1919, he was the son of Robert Luther Franks and Lula Sumpter Franks.
He was married to Barbara Lewis Franks for 53 years.
He was a retired meat cutter for the Wilson Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, survivors include one daughter, Paulette Franks of Danville; four sons, Jerry Franks, Victor Franks and Perry Franks, all of Danville, and Bobby Franks of Chesapeake; three sisters, Evelyn Evans and Ruth Seiple, both of Danville, and Patricia Childress of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Russell Franks of Danville and Phillip Franks of Ringgold; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Franks.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 630 Parker Road.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dick Mansfield

Richard N. "Dick" Mansfield, 83, of 1427 Hunters Lane, Blairs, died Saturday morning, June 1, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the last six months.
Born March 24, 1913, in Halifax County, he was the son of Abner N. Mansfield and Maggie Mae Reeves Mansfield.
He was of the Baptist faith. He spent the early part of his life in Halifax County, moving to Danville in 1926 and then to Blairs in 1955. Until his retirement in 1979, he had been employed as a machinist for Dan River Inc. and Disston.
On Sept. 14, 1935, he married Regina Nunn Mansfield, who preceded him in death on March 15, 1985.
He was preceded in death also by three sisters, Elizabeth Scruggs, Gladys Williams and Nettie Mansfield.
Survivors include two sisters, Maggie Fox of Front Royal and Mary Meadows of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Clarence Lee Mansfield of Danville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Frank Fuller.
The family will be at the residence of Thomas and Susan Nunn, 1507 Hunters Lane, Blairs.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Walter Proffitt

PELHAM, N.C. - Walter Conley Proffitt, 68, died Friday, May 31, 1996, in Duke Medical Center where he had been for the last nine days. He had been in declining health for seeral years.
Born June 15, 1927, in Davey, W.Va., he was the son of Walter Conley Proffitt and Ella Smith Proffitt.
He had lived most of his life in Welch, W.Va., before moving to Pelham in 1964. He was a retired coal miner. He was of the Holiness faith and had served with U.S. Navy.
He married Josie Mitchell Proffitt on Aug. 3, 1950.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Willard C. Proffitt of Pelham and David M. Proffitt of Semora; four daughters, Kelly L. Edwards and Regina M. Finn, both of Mt. Airy, Tenley M. Proffitt of Pelham and Kimberly D. Worsham of Cana, Va.; five sisters, Sylvie P. Burchett of Pelham, Maxine P. Eanes of Welch, W.Va., Leatha P. Peetrom of Pittsburgh, and Josie P. Eanes and Shirley P. Stowe, both of Danville, Va.; and 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Mike Davis Jr. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the residence of son David M. Proffitt, 1254 Jack Pointer Road, Semora, off Route 119.

Anna Belle Booker

Anna Belle Stephens Booker, 82, of 1040 South Main St., died Sunday, June 2, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for one year and in the hospital for two weeks.
Born Feb. 28, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of P. Marvin Stephens and Anna Coleman Stephens.
She spent all her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.
On Feb. 14, 1947, she was married to William Jennings Booker Sr., who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, W.J. Booker Jr. of Sutherlin and Thomas S. Booker of Danville; and two grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. John T. LeGault.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Malcolm "Mac" Guthrie

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Malcolm Arnold "Mac" Guthrie, 69, of 1406 Main St., died Sunday, June 2, 1996, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
Born Nov. 24, 1926, in Caswell County, he was a son of James Harvey Guthrie and Ruth Mise Guthrie.
He was retired from Guamtum Chemical Co. and Abercrombie Oil Co.
He was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church and American Legion Post 89.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant.
Survivors include his wife, Helen White Guthrie of the residence; one daughter, Janice G. Clayton of Yanceyville; three sisters, Velma Richmond of Reidsville, Dorothy Williamson of Leasburg, and Mable Foster of Lynchburg, Va.; two brothers, Elwood Guthrie and Earl Guthrie both of Blanch; and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Stanley Hare. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times will be at the residence.

Joe Rainey

RUFFIN, N.C. - Joe Howard Rainey, 76, of 1223 Allison Road, died Saturday, June 1, 1996, in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
Born March 19, 1920, in Caswell County, he was a son of Charlie D. Rainey and Sallie Smith Rainey.
He was a retired merchant and farmer, and a member of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Harrelson Rainey of the home; two daughters, Donna Ware of Greenville and Susan Cass of Ruffin; two sisters, Louise Steelman and Rosa Perkins both of Burlington; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Casville by the Elder Donald Smith and the Rev. Claude Harrelson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times will be at the residence.

Mary Varner

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - The graveside service for Mary Isabelle Varner, 86, of 2735 U.S. Hwy. 158 West, will be conducted 1 p.m. today from Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Scott Wilkerson.
She died Thursday, May 30, 1996, at her residence.
Born Dec. 24, 1909, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was a daughter of James L. McIntosh and Adelaide Taylor McIntosh.
She was retired from the U.S. Army/Air Force as a staff driver. She was also a homemaker and of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lee Carter of West Yanceyville; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Clifton Varner.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 69 Bo Carter Road, West Yanceyville.
Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lou Barr

Mary Lou Crawley Barr, 92, died Monday, June 3, 1996, in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a resident for the past five years.
Born April 4, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Daniel H. Crawley and Virginia Jennings Crawley.
She was married to George Horace Barr Sr., who died Nov. 12, 1978.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker.
She was a charter member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Clyde D. Barr of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Barr Shields of Keeling; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Wilson and Dr. Howard W. Lee. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 9332 Old Richmond Road, in the Keeling community.

Lawrence Dooley Jr.

Lawrence Shelton Dooley Jr., 422 Cliff St., died Monday, June 3, 1996, in the Moses Cone Memorial Hospital of Greensboro, N.C.
Born Jan. 4, 1934, in Kimbridge, he was a son of Lawrence Shelton Dooley Sr. and Mary Slaughter Dooley, who survives.
On June 17, 1956, he was married to Barbara Ann Morgan.
He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was also employed by the Pittsylvania County Vocational-Technical Institute, where he taught electronics for the past 17 years.
He was also a member of Westover Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Martinsville, survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Ann Pettis of Perry, Ga.; a son, Larry Eugene Dooley of Chatham; a brother, Harry Lee Dooley of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday from Westover Baptist Church by Dr. Doug Barber, the Rev. Robert Vermillion and the Rev. Dean Lamphere. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where full military honors will be given by the Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
