THROCKMORTON
Maurice Bernard "Jack" Throckmorton of 1517A Henrico Arms, Richmond, Va., died on November 16, at the age of 74. Mr. Throckmorton is survived by a lifetime companion, Evelyn Moltz; a son, Stanley; four daughters, Jackie, Linda, Tammy, and Kimberly; one brother, Buddie; ten grandchildren, Shane, Shannon, Shawn, Sheldon, Keith, Kerri, Krystal, Jack, Shelia, and Shawn; a niece, Jeannie; two nephews, Johnny and Gene Maurice; five great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. Jack served in the United States Marine Corp. He was a country music entertainer for years and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry. He composed lyrics for Jeannie Sheppard and performed with Bill Anderson, Jimmy Dickens, Buck Owens, Hank Snow, Tex Ritter, Marty Robins, Porter Wagner and Hank Williams Sr., along with many other country music celebrities. Remains rest at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends and family 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 19 in the chapel at the funeral home. Rev. Carl Tanksley officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Massey Cancer Center, P.O. Box 980037, 401 College St., Richmond, Va. 23298. Jack will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends, and by his canine companion, Java.

TOPPING
Donnie Ray (Topper-Topcat) Topping Sr. went to his heavenly home on November 16, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Claudia Marie Topping; also surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette Topping Merchent and Thomas Henry Merchent; his son, Donnie Ray (Bubba) Topping Jr. and his wife, Kara Coley Topping. Topper was the proud grandfather of Tiffany, Travis, Tyler, Ashley, and Brooke; four brothers, and three sisters. Also left behind are beloved friends, W. Lennie and Cordia Garrett. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be at Westhampton Memorial Park.

TUNSTALL
Ann Celeste Tunstall of Richmond died Friday, November 16, 2001. She is survived by two sons, James Howard Massie and Daniel Lee Massie; two sisters, Helen Mary Keith and Catherine Marie Yurachek; one brother, Gerald V. Poh; six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews, and friends who gave love, compassion and support. Celeste was a retired employee of Globe Envelope Co. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, followed by interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Association for the Support of Children with Cancer (ASK), c/o MCV Hospitals, Box 980121, Richmond, Va. 23298-0121.

UTSCH
Francis (Fran) Utsch, 60, of 13000 Robius Rd., Midlothian, died suddenly Friday, November 16, 2001. Mr. Utsch was a chemical engineer, last employed as an executive in the Research and Development Division at Philip Morris. He had significant patents attributed to him during his tenor at Philip Morris. Prior to this, he was employed as a chemical engineer for the U.S. Government. Mr. Utsch was a 1963 graduate of Pennsylvania State University and was an avid outdoorsman and a former boy scout. In addition to his father, he is survived by his stepmother, Arlene B. Utsch of Bangor, Pa.; three sons, Louis Utsch of Cranberry, Pa., Jeffrey Utsch of Tucson, Ariz., and Brendan Utsch of Midlothian; two daughters, Jennifer Utsch and Laura Utsch, both of Tucson, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Kelly Andrews of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two brothers, Dr. Glenn Utsch of Grove City, Pa., and Douglas Utsch of Blanchester, Ohio; three stepbrothers, Terry Wagner, Randy Wagner and Mitchell Wagner, all of Bangor, Pa.; one sister, Winnie Solosko of Nashua, N.H.; and six grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at his residence in Midlothian, Va. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday at the residence. Funeral services will be held in Bangor, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, Va. 22314

David Weaver of 3103 Hanes Ave., died November 17, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

WILLIS
Henry D. Willis Jr., 59, of the 4400 block of Jeanne St., died November 16, 2001, in a local hospital. Mr. Willis was retired from the Naval Air Depot business office and was a U.S. Airforce veteran. He attended Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ and was a member of the Norfolk Lodge of the Fraternal Order of the Moose. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Glenda "Jeanette" Willis; and a brother, Donald L. Willis. He was the son of the late Henry and Frances Willis. He is survived by one son, Douglas M. Willis of Virginia Beach; a sister, Shelby W. Duncan and her husband, Jim of Beaverdam, Va.; a brother, Stuart F. Willis and his wife, Jean of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a special friend, Pat Green of Virginia Beach; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach Chapel. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Pembroke Manor United Church of Christ, by the Rev. Joe Paluszak. Entombment will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Richmond, Va.

WORLEY
Carol Lange Worley, 58, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, November 15, 2001 after a brief illness. Carol was a daughter of the late Henry Lange Sr. Surviving are her husband, Samuel Worley; mother and stepfather, Roy and Esther Potter of New Kent; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Rocky and Vicki Haynes of New Kent, Thomas E. Haynes of Chester; one daughter, Tammi Waltz of Richmond; stepchildren and spouses, Samuel and Delores Worley of Gloucester, Anna and Scott Hawkins, Adam Worley, all of Williamsburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Jenny and John Thielbar of New Kent; one brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Claretta Lange of Calif.; grandchildren, Raymond, Roxanne, Travis, Colby, Mike, David, Cameron, Heather, Joseph, Jenna, David, Alysia and Alexandra; nieces and spouses, Tracy and Robert Hughes of Lanexa, Pam and Jesse Smith of Tennessee, Vicky and Buddy Wray of Colonial Heights, Tracy Masi of Richmond, Stacy Wray of Colonial Heights; nephew, John Thielbar II of New Kent; also surviving are four great nieces and nephew, Nicole, Robert, Megan, Brooke. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2001 from the Bucktrout Funeral Chapel. Entombment will follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park. Friends may call Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Bucktrout of Williamsburg is serving the Worley family.

William Spratley dies at 58

A funeral for William M. Spratley, whose tenor voice helped provide the harmonies for the vocal group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg.
A Petersburg native, Mr. Spratley died Monday at age 58. He lived in Hopewell.
In the mid-1970s, Mr. Spratley became a background vocalist for the group, best known for the'70s hits, "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "I Miss You" and "Don't Leave Me This Way." He recorded four albums with the Blue Notes and toured the world until his 1992 retirement, his family said.
A 1960 graduate of Peabody High School, he served three years in the Air Force and sang with a number of regional acts before pursuing his professional music career.
"He truly had a gift for song and real heart for music," said his daughter, Mortice Spratley-Jackson, of Chesterfield. "He told me once that if you believe that's what you are supposed to do, you can do anything."
Other survivors include his wife, Brenda Spratley; his mother, Beatrice Spratley, of Hopewell; 10 other children, Frederick Davis, Angela Davis, Velda Thorpe, Saamori Spratley and Saajaimori Spratley, all of Petersburg; Michael Wayne Spratley, of Richmond; Gretchen Ann Warren, of Chester; Ychelle Spratley Bey, of Chesterfield; Siilleya Spratley Johnson, of Norfolk, and Edward LaPrelle Bunn, of Camp LeJeune, N.C.; 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery in Petersburg.

ADAMS
Hays Otey Adams, 82, of Richmond, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Dora Adams; two daughters, Bobbie Martin and her husband, Jim of Forsyth, Georgia, Debbie Holder and her husband, Rudy of Richmond; a sister, Sue McMann of Danville; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mr. Adams was a member and past president of the Retiree's Association of Teamsters Local #592. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Avenue, where services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.. Interment Forest Lawn. BARNES
Jean Rosamond Smith Barnes, age 93, of Kinsale, formerly of Warrenton, died April 4, 2002 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Barnes; and a daughter, Judith Barnes Mazzoli. She is survived by her son, Robert Randall Barnes of Kinsale; nine grandchildren, Vito "Skipper" Thomas and Wade Mazzoli, Yolanda "Tina" Mazzoli Rogers, Sandra Mazzoli Edgel, and Brian, Christopher, Evan and Austin Barnes; 12 great-grandchildren; and a devoted nephew, Lewis Smith. The remains rest at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood, where the family will receive visitors on Saturday, April 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 7 at 3 p.m. at Jones-Ash Funeral Home. Private interment on Monday, April 8 at Antioch Baptist Church, Haymarket, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kinsale Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 51, Kinsale, Va. 22488.

BINNS
W. Gordon Binns Jr., 72, of Richmond and New York, died after a brief illness April 4, 2002 at MCV Hospitals. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Alberta Fry Binns; his daughters, Amanda Letitia Binns and Clarissa Fetrow of Seattle; his sister, Mary Katherine Binns Wallace. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Rd. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christian Children's Fund or MCV Foundation.

BOSCHEN
Hazel Hale Boschen, 86, of Ashland, passed away April 4, 2002 at her residence. She was the widow of Charles H. Boschen Jr. She is survived by her son, Charles H. Boschen III and his wife, Sherri L. Boschen; her daughter, M. Patricia Boschen; two brothers, B.E. Hale and John F. Hale; two sisters, Mary H. White and Lillian H. Powers; a sister-in-law, Dorothy B. Utley; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dear friend and nurse, Mary Kasali. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Interment Woodland Cemetery. Derward A. Brooks, 83, passed away peacefully at home April 5, 2002 after a courageous battle with diabetes.. Son of the late John and Katie Brooks of Montpelier, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Wickham Brooks; and his brother, J. Allen Brooks. He was a co-owner of D.A. and G.W. Brooks Lumber Co. of Montpelier. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Waldrop Brooks; his son, Derward A. Brooks Jr.; his granddaughter, Meredith Brooks; a sister, Peggy Goodman; and a brother, Garland Brooks. Mr. Brooks served on the USS Bremerton during WWII. The family will receive friends 2 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Virginia Rathine Butler, 79, of Chester, widow of Glen William Butler, died Friday, April 5, 2002 in John Randolph Medical Center. She is survived by a son, Col. William P. Butler, M.D. of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Judy B. Thomas of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Cindy B. Partin and husband, John Boyd Partin Sr. of Colonial Heights; three grandchildren, David Glen Thomas, John Boyd Partin Jr. and Allison Kaitlyn Partin; two sisters, Doris Hubbard of Fairfax, Va. and Velma McDaniel of Chester; and a brother, John Rathien of Chester. The family will receive friends at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with her nephew, the Rev. Dr. H. Curtis McDaniel Jr. officiating. DRIGGS
James H. Driggs, 84, of Lanexa, Va., died Thursday, April 4, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Driggs; daughter, Linda D. Latta; three grandchildren, Rhonda Croston, Pamela Latta and James Latta; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Kirkpatric, Ethel McCready and Francis Bentley; four brothers, Ray Driggs, Frank Driggs, Donald Driggs and Fulton Driggs. Mr. Driggs was a retired dispatcher for the James City County Polic Department and part owner of the Toano Grocery. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., and where services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

Elizabeth E. "Beth" Foster of Richmond went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 4, 2002. She was preceded in death by her son, John R. "Jack" Foster III; and is survived by her husband, John R. Foster Jr.; two sisters, Anne Eaton Bonsack of Richmond and Doris Eaton Wright and husband, John M. of Delaware; sister-in-law, Anne J. Foster of Richmond; two nieces, Nancy Elizabeth Bonsack of Richmond and Barbara Wright Whisman of Delaware; one nephew, John M. Wright III of Delaware. Mrs. Foster was a member of the St. Giles Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A memorial service will be held Monday 11 a.m. at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception.
