Sallie Compton

Sallie R. Compton, 88, of 816 Hughes St., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born Jan. 27, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joe Rowland and Nannie Davis Rowland.
She spent most of her life in Danville. She worked for 38 years at Dan River Inc. before retiring.
She was a member of Kemper Road Baptist Church.
She was married to Alvin B. Compton, who died June 20, 1981.
Survivors include a sister, Lucy Burnett of Altavista; and two brothers, Marvin Rowland of Jarratt and Elbert Rowland of Chesapeake.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

James 'Boots' Hall

The funeral for James Elsworth "Boots" Hall, 71, 5044 Jefferson Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following three months of declining health.
Born Sept. 24, 1925, in Raleigh, N.C., he was a son of Ray Wilburn Hall and Myrtle Green Henderson Hall.
On March 5, 1948, he was married to Elsie Fuller Hall, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville. He owned and operated Hall's Pastry Shop. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where he attended the Servo Sunday school class.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 325, the Improved Order of Redmen, and the Traveler's Protective Association.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Michael James Hall of Danville; a sister, Hortense H. Burnett of Danville; a brother, Wallace B. Hall of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Paul Kelley

Paul Iliff Kelley, 77, 316 Summit Road, died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1919, in Holland, Vt., he was a son of Orville Kelley and Lena Hitchcock Kelley.
He was formerly married to Phyllis Mitton Kelley of Medway, Mass.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a teacher and principal in Massachusetts. While living in Danville, he was a member of the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club.
He is survived by a son, Paul Kelley Jr. of Douglas, Mass.; a daughter, Nancy K. Collins of White Plains, N.Y.; a brother, Stirling R. Kelley of Newport, Vt.; and a sister, Frances K. Boisvert of Derby, Vt.
He was predeceased by a brother, Roland Kelley of California.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. The burial will also be held at a later date in Evergreen cemetery in Medway, Mass.

Ernest 'Mack' McMinnis

Ernest "Mack" Paul McMinnis, 80, of 704 Colonial Ridge Apartments, Gretna, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.
Born July 19, 1916, Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Bennie Ralph McMinnis and Maggie Dalton McMinnis.
He was predeceased by a brother, W.F. "Frank" McMinnis and a sister, Mabel Pickeral.
He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of VFW Post 647.
Survivors include two brothers, Lester "Buck" McMinnis Sr. of Danville and Marshall McMinnis of Moneta; and two sisters, Ina Hogan of Danville and Lucy Wells of Callands.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Colbert-Moran Funeral Home by Elder Marvin Brumfield. Interment will follow in Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Donald Overcash

Donald Baxter Overcash, 53, of 115 Lady Astor St., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at his residence. He had been in declining health for one year.
Born Dec. 19, 1942, in Roanoke, he was a son of Dr. William Earl Overcash and Majorie Skinner Overcash.
On Nov. 16, 1983, he married Patricia Anne Overcash.
He spent most of his life in Danville, graduating from city schools. He attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving in the Army.
He was vice president of Pittsylvania Hardware for many years. He was later owner and operator of Restorations and More.
He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, where he served on the vestry.
He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. William E. Overcash Jr.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother, survivors include one brother, Dr. Kelly E. Overcash of Danville; two daughters, Kristen Vaughn Overcash and Lauren Alexander Overcash, both of Raleigh, N.C.; three step-children, Frederick A. Zehrer IV and Diana Z. Murphy, both of Midlothian and Carolyn Z. Garden of Evanston, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by the Rev. James Mathieson. A committal will be in the church columbarium.
The family will be at the residence.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jacob B. Patterson

The funeral for Jacob B. "Jake" Patterson, 77, 1483 Myrtle Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Robert T. Hackworth and the Rev. William C. Taylor. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, in his residence, following six months of declining health.
Born Nov. 30, 1919, in Danville, he was a son of George L. Patterson and Bessie Herndon Patterson.
On May 6, 1939, he was married to Odessa Hubbard Patterson, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Danville, where he was employed by Dan River Mills for 40 years as a maintenance supervisor. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He was also active in his local political party. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, David H. Patterson and Jacob B. "Jake" Patterson Jr., both of Danville; five brothers, Carrel L. Patterson of Buena Vista, George Robert Patterson of Carthage, N.C., John Thomas Patterson of Monroe, N.C., E. Issac Patterson of Miami and Letcher B. Patterson of Danville; a daughter, Judy Patterson French of Highland Springs; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice P. Overby and Mae P. Lester.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jesse Short

Jesse Berger Short, 71, Route 1, Lynch Station, died Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 27, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Anderson Parker "Pug" Short and Florence Brizendine Short.
He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post No. 4165.
He was a retired electrician with Ross Laboratories.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Short and Alton "Funny" Short and one grandchild.
Survivors include one son, Jesse F. Short of Germany; three daughters, Mary F. Short of Lynchburg, Carolyn M. Short of Lynch Station and Debra S. Martin of Appomattox; three brothers, Robert Short and Richard Short, both of Hurt and Johnny Short of Alabama; five sisters, Rachel Morris of Altavista, Gladys Doss and Roxanna Short, both of Hurt, Frances Dockery and Joyce Moore, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The funereal will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Finch & Finch Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Donald Godfrey. Burial will be in New Prospect Baptist Church cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW post No. 4165 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 46.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence.

Marvin Underwood

Marvin Ray Underwood, 82, of Dula Street, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past two months.
Born March 22, 1914, in Grayson County, he was a son of Charles Underwood and Margaret Edwards Underwood.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He had spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked for Dan River Inc. before retiring. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Loyd W. Underwood of Providence, N.C. and Jesse L. Underwood of Danville; one sister, Rosa Lee Martin of Danville; and other relatives.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Mark Moore.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Georgia Whisenant

Georgia Coleman Guthrie Whisenant, 87, of 741 Arnett Blvd., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1909, in Nathalie, she was a daughter of James Lemuel Guthrie and Mary Ella Roark Guthrie.
She had lived most of her life in Danville. She was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
She was married to Raymond H. Whisenant Sr., who died Sept. 27, 1973. She was also predeceased by a son, Raymond H. Whisenant Jr.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary W. Shires of Kennesaw, Ga., Lois W. Walton of Lilburn, Ga. and JoAnn W. Robertson of Danville; a son, Thomas L. Whisenant of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, J.L. Guthrie of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Mary G. Guthrie of Lynchburg and Myra G. Brumfield of Danville; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Ronald Mateer.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Landon Keatts

Landon Archer Keatts, 83, of 1251 Cascade Road, died Sunday morning, Dec. 8, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for two years, and in the hospital for three days.
Born July 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of David Keatts and Callie Moorefield Keatts.
He spent most of his life in the Cascade Community of Pittsylvania County. He attended Brosville High School, and worked as a loom fixer at Dan River Inc. for 50 years.
He was a member and deacon of Leatherwood Primitive Baptist Church, and a member of the Dan River Retired Workers Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Minter Keatts of the home; two daughters, Brenda Keatts Kallam and Norma Keatts Thornton, both of Richmond; one son, Michael P. Keatts of Semora, N.C.; six sisters, Eva McDaniel of Martinsville, Annie Brooks of Chester, C. Nancy Keatts Owen of Spring Garden, Cynthia Keatts Hill of Danville, Ruth Keatts Woodson of Ruffin, N.C., and Matilda Keatts Brummett of Danville; four brothers, David Keatts of Danville, Clay Keatts of Bachelors Hall, Louis Keatts of Rocky Mount, and Elmer Keatts of Norfolk; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by Elder John Asby, Elder Thomas Radford, and Elder Robert Asby. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.
