Mary Henry

CHATHAM - Mary Eliza Henry, 76, of 1037 Mill Creek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, at her residence.
Born Dec. 19, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late George E. Jones and Lucy C. Jones.
She was married to Leslie M. Henry who is predeceased. She was retired from the Oak Grove Lodge. She was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church, Shockoe Senior Choir, and Clarktown Community Club.
She is survived by three sons, James Henry of New Rochell, N.Y., Robert Henry of Philadelphia, Pa., and Stanford Henry of Chatham; two daughters, Shirley Terry, of Chatham, and Chatherine Reese of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; two brothers, John Henry Jones of New Rochell, N.Y., and Dillard Vaden of Danville; one sister, Inez Jones Farmer of Chatham; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. at Shockoe Baptist Church by the Rev. G.H. Pass. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Christakos

NORFOLK - Helen E. Scott Christakos, 77, of Norfolk, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1996, at Harbour Point.
Born in Danville, she was married to Thomas G. Christakos who is predeceased. She was retired from Commonwealth Detective and Security where she was a vice president for 45 years.
She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation and also of the Pythians Sisters Lodge #110.
She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Christakos Woods of Virginia Beach; a son, George Thomas Christakos of Virginia Beach; five sisters, Leona P. Shorter of Norfolk, Margie Walsh of Danville, Nancy Atkins of Portsmouth, Nellie Anne Archbald of Chesapeake, and Virginia Dalay of Chesapeake; one brother, Jack A. Scott of Norfolk; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, James T. Scott and Robert L. Scott.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation by Father Constantine Rogakos. Burial will be at the Forest Lawn cemetery. Memorial prayers will be offered Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of Smith & Williams Funeral Home.

Wilton Smith

Wilton "Smitty" Smith, 69, died Monday morning, Dec. 9, 1996, at his residence.
Born Nov. 24, 1927, in Burlington, N.C., he was the son of Charles W. Smith and Fannie Robertson Smith.
He moved to Danville in 1964 to operate the "King of the Sea" Restaurant and later became owner. He retired this year.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a life member and president of the Burlington Jaycees in 1962-63, where he had won many national awards. He was also a life member of the Sertoma Club, where he was a former president. This year he received the Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Club. He was also a long-time supporter of G.W.H.S. athletics and the Danville Life Saving Crew.
In addition to his wife, Peggy Smith, of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Denise S. Willems of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Mitzi S. Mullins of Danville; two brothers, Charlie Smith and Carl Smith, both of Burlington, N.C.; four sisters, Eary S. Carroll, Ruby Smith, Agnes S. Bland, and Deane S. Kelly, all of Burlington, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete.

Muriel Saul

Muriel Walker Saul, 75, of 132 Kenilworth Avenue, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 9, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Hubbard F. Walker and Elsie Hill Walker.
She was married to A. Cecil Saul who is predeceased.
She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Saul Eller of Danville; one brother, Richard Crews Walker of Goshen, Ky.; and one granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park by Rev. John T. LeGault.
The family will receive friends at the residence at 132 Kenilworth Ave. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Norma Rogers

Norma Eanes Rogers, 91, formerly of 130 James Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 9, 1996, at the Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 18, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas J. Eanes and Nannie Gray Eanes.
She was married to Edward L. Rogers on Dec. 24, 1927, who died in 1968.
She lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County where she was a homemaker. She was a member of West End Christian Church. She taught Sunday School and had worked in the church for 32 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Frances Rogers Camp of Georgetown, Tx.; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William B. Dozier and the Rev. Daniel Lackey. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

Willie Barksdale

Willie Lee Barksdale, 80, of 137 Northern Dr., died Saturday morning, Dec. 7, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1916, in Chatham, he was the son of Whit Barksdale and Pearlie White Barksdale.
He was educated in the Pittsylvania County public schools, and was married to Lou Augusta Barksdale, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Ernest Barksdale, Robert Lee Barksdale, Bobby Lee Barksdale and Ronald Whit Barksdale all of Danville; four daughters, Dorothy Glymph, Lottie Barksdale, Betty Saunders and Leathia Kates all of Danville; one brother, Norton Barksdale; four sisters, Era Poole, Vera Womack, Louise Barksdale and Garnett Courts all of Danville; and several grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph B. Cypress. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Bradley

The funeral for Annie Gunnell Bradley, 85, of 102 Parkmore Court, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Cabel Roberts and the Rev. Dr. Jerry Falwell. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Friday, Dec. 6, 1996, at her residence. She had been in declining health for one year.
Born Sept. 24, 1911, she was a daughter of the Robert Irving Gunnell and Emma Caroline Wilson Gunnell.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. W.C. Bradley, who died in 1992.
She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and a charter member and co-founder of the former Southall Baptist Church. She was secretary of the Sunday School department, a choir member and a member of the ladies' fellowship.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Odell Bradley of Lynchburg; and three daughters, Dorothy Bradley Todd, Peggy Bradley Howerton and Jo Anne Bradley Jefferson, all of Danville; one brother, Jesse R. Gunnell of Danville; two sisters, Hazel L. Fowler and Virginia Bland Dewberry, both of Danville; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence H. Gunnell and Harry W. Gunnell.

Mary Dix

The funeral for Mary Talbott Dix, 77, of Petersburg, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Petersburg by Rev. J. Stephen Jones. Interment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park.
She died Friday, Dec. 6, 1996.
A native of Halifax County, she was a daughter of Robert Jefferson Talbott and Nette Frances Pruitt Talbott.
She was a retired district manager for Field Enterprises Educational Corporation.
She was a member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Petersburg and a volunteer with the Red Cross, most recently at Kenner Army Hospital, Fort Lee.
She was a member of the Federated Womens Club of Petersburg.
She is survived by a daughter, Eileen Smith of Waterview; a son, Linwood R. "Buddy" Dix Jr. of Hopewell; one sister, Minnie T. Morriss of Martinsville, and five grandsons.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sgt. Linwood R. Dix Sr.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home.

Landon Keatts

Landon Archer Keatts, 83, of 1251 Cascade Road, died Sunday morning, Dec. 8, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for two years, and in the hospital for three days.
Born July 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of David Keatts and Callie Morefield Keatts.
He spent most of his life in the Cascade Community of Pittsylvania County. He attended Brosville High School, and worked as a loom fixer at Dan River Inc. for 50 years.
He was a member and deacon of Leatherwood Primitive Baptist Church, and belonged to the Dan River Retired Workers Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Minter Keatts of the home; two daughters, Brenda Keatts kallam and Norma Keatts Thornton both of Richmond; one son, Michael P. Keatts of Semora, N.C.; six sisters, Eva McDaniel of Martinsville, Annie Brooks of Chester, C. Nancy Keatts Owen of Spring Garden, Cynthia Keatts Hill of Danville, Ruth Keatts Woodson of Ruffin, N.C., and Matilda Keatts Brummett of Danville; four brothers, David Keatts of Danville, Clay Keatts of Bachelors Hall, Louis Keatts of Rocky Mount, and Elmer Keatts of Norfolks; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by Elder John Asby, Elder Thomas Radford, and Elder Robert Asby. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.

Lula Younger

CHATHAM - Lula Dodson Younger, 96, of 1092 Millcreek Road, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, at her home.
Born July 12, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Berriel Dodson and Ellen Wooding Dodson.
She was married to Percy Younger, who predeceased her.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Gretna.
Survivors include two daughters, Florence Hodnett and Darlene Pritchett both of Chatham; a son, Mariwell Dodson of Chatham; three step-daughters, Frances Clark of Akron, Ohio, Connie Wright of Chatham, and Madie Younger of Gretna; one step-son, Arthur Younger of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and several step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Baptist Church by the Rev. Hubert White. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Bradley

Annie Gunnell Bradley, 85, of 102 Parkmoor Court, died Friday, Dec. 6, 1996, at her residence after declining in health for the past year.
Born Sept. 24, 1911, she was a daughter of the Robert Irving Gunnell and Emma Caroline Wilson Gunnell.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. W.C. Bradley, who died in 1992.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday 7-8:30 p.m. and will be at the residence at other times.

Marie Daniel

DRY FORK - The funeral for Ethel Marie Custer Daniel, 75, of 4308 Dry Fork Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Christ Church "Episcopal" by the Rev. Dr. Peter Toon. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Friday, Dec. 6,1996, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 31, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Cordie Columbus Custer and Minnie Mills Custer.
She was retired from Chatham High School.
A member of Christ Church "Episcopal," she was a member of the Episcopal Church Women and the Dry Fork Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include her husband Dennis Gilmer Daniel of Dry Fork; two daughters, Gail D. Midkiff of Elkin, N.C., and Donna D. Herndon of Chatham; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Rex O. Custer Sr. and Cordie C. Custer Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Scott Funeral Home in Chatham is in charge of arrangements.
