Walter Ferrell

The graveside service for Walter Calvin Ferrell, 57, 2520 Airview Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion.

He died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for one year and in the hospital for one week.

Born Sept. 20, 1939, in Halifax County, he was the son of Jack Lee Ferrell and Odahalia Davis Ferrell Rogers, who survives.

He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County. He worked for Dan River Inc. for many years, and he last worked for J.P. Taylor Tobacco Co.

He was of the Presbyterian faith.

On Feb. 19, 1960, he was married to Lillie Mayhew Ferrell, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Ringgold, and his mother of Ringgold, survivors include two daughters, Shelia Ferrell Crabb of Ringgold and Pamela Ferrell Adkins of Dry Fork; one son, Calvin Wayne Ferrell of Ringgold; three sisters, Freda R. Phelps of Ringgold, Patricia R. Flowers and Kathy Sue R. Flowers both of Danville; one brother, Wayne "Fuzzy" Rogers of Danville; and one grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Shelia F. Crabb, 821 Kentuck Church Road, Route 726 between Route 729 and Route 360.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Leonard C. Foster

The funeral for Leonard C. Foster, 60, 460 Pineview Road, will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Ronald Smith. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

He died Saturday, Nov. 16, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for five years and in the hospital for three days.

Born Feb. 18, 1936, in Ringgold, he was the son of L.C. Foster and Ethel Dalton Foster, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County.

He was retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., where he had worked 18 years in the press area.

On Feb. 5, 1958, he was married to Margaret Black Foster, who survives.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the residence, and his mother, of Keeling, include two sons, Leonard Howard Foster of North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Allen Keith Foster of Bachelors Hall; one daughter Deborah Ann Foster of Bachelors Hall; three brothers, Jimmie Foster of Danville, Stewart Foster of South Boston, and Johnny Foster of Keeling; four sisters, Edith F. Spraker of Martinsville, Juanita F. Barrett of Danville, and Mary F. Loftis and Joan F. Deel both of Keeling; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, in the Bachelors Hall community.

Edward Jackson Sr.

HALIFAX - Edward Jackson Sr., 75, Route 698, died Friday, Nov. 15, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born June 23, 1921, in Halifax County, he was a son of Joe and Susie Coleman Jackson.

He was married to Ruby Ferrell Jackson, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Edward Jackson Jr. of South Boston and Earl Jackson of the residence; two daughters, Susie Stephens of Danville and Dorothy Moore of Clinton, Md.; three sisters, Charlotte Williams of Keeling, Julia Jackson and Gracie Jackson, both of Vernon Hill; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Arthur Crews.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Crawford, Garrett, and Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Constance Jefferson

CHATHAM - Constance Murphy Jefferson, 82, 18809 Hwy. 29 North, died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996, in her residence.

Born May 14, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John William Murphy and Mildred Wyatt Murphy.

She was married to William P. Jefferson, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Barbour of Chatham, and one grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. John Martin and the Rev. Richard Mallory.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Scott Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Lacks Sr.

CLOVER - Thomas Wilson Lacks Sr., 82, 1033 Mosely Ferry Road, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1914, he was a son of Thomas U. Lacks and Hattie Whitlow Lacks.

He was married to Bernice Motley Lacks, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of Clover Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a farmer and as a school bus driver.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Cheryl L. Pace of Wilmington, Del.; a son, Thomas W. Lacks Jr. of Hays, N.C.; two sisters, Gertrude Clark and Ruby Lacks, both of Clover; two brothers, Roy Lacks of Halifax and Garland Lacks of South Hill; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Clover Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Wilkins and the Rev. Julian M. Motley. Burial will be in Clover cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston, and other times at the residence.

Ida Newby

SOUTH BOSTON - Ida Dalton Newby, Route 3, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, in M.C.V. Hospital of Richmond.

Born Feb. 22, 1917, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Eugene Dalton and Sally Dalton.

She was married to Floyd Newby Sr.

She was a member of Arbor Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Lissie Mae Lewis of Halifax, Pauline Jefferson of Wirtz, and Thelma Lewis of South Boston; one son, Clifton Newby of South Boston; two sisters, Annie Moser of Chatham and Nettie Montgomery of Altavista; 17 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Floyd Lee "Buck" Newby Jr., and six brothers.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Arbor Baptist Church by the Rev. Avertte Witcher and the Rev. Albert Moser. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-9 tonight at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, and other times at the residence.

Margaret Pickral

GRETNA - Margaret Mills Pickral, 91, of Gretna, died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996.

Born Aug. 3, 1905, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Mills and Martha Ragland Mills.

She was married to Harry Edgar Pickral Sr., who predeceased her.

She was a member of Springfield Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include seven sons, H. Edgar Pickral Jr., Oscar Pickral, Judson Pickral, and Charlie Pickral, all of Gretna, Gerald Pickral, Bobby Pickral, and Reuben Pickral, all of Chatham; three daughters, Betty Rowles and Shirley Shelton, both of Gretna, and Rebecca Shelton of Concord; 33 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one child and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Springfield Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Marvin Brumfield. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna, and other times at the residence of a son, Oscar Pickral, 705 South Main St., Gretna.

Corrine Pryor

Corrine Meadows Pryor, 71, 109 Fairfield Ave., died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996, in Stratford Health Care Center.

A native of Gretna, she was a housewife and a member of the Baptist faith.

She was married to John Allen Pryor Jr., who predeceased her.

Survivors include four sisters, Louise Reynolds of Dry Fork, Mary Bennett of Ringgold, Ida McGuire of Danville, and Jean Seidnitzer of Hampton.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four sisters and one brother.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery in Reidsville, N.C., by the Rev. H.P. Somers.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville, N.C., and other times at the residence of a sister, Mary Bennett, 1095 Mountain Hill Road, Ringgold.

James Witcher

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - James Mills Witcher, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, in a Charleston Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1951, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Armstead J. Witcher and Mary Jane Mills Witcher, who survive.

He was a member of Faith Assembly in Summerville. He was employed as a barber.

In addition to his parents of Goose Creek, he is survived by a brother, William K. Witcher of Goose Creek.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Stuhr's Greenridge Road Chapel in Charleston. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Harold Dalton

SUTHERLIN - Harold Page Dalton, 71, of 3006 Wooding Road, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 1996, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 18, 1925, in Halifax County, he was the son of Robert Dalton and Viola Puckett Hawker.

He was married to Virginia Pruett Dalton, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Janet Hudgins of Brosville and Vivian Craft of Danville; one son, Lewis Dalton of Sutherlin; two sisters, Louise Thorton and Nancy Mills both of Danville; and two granddaughters.

The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Larry Mullholland.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Powell Funeral Home, South Boston, and other times will be at the residence.
