Mrs. Anne Ellett Hardy, 80, passed away April 4, 2002. She was a retired teacher and guidance counselor. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Amelia Court House with interment to follow at the Amelia Presbyterian Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, George Olin Hardy III of Amelia Court House, Va.; two sons, George Olin Hardy IV of Amelia Court House and William Ellett Hardy and wife, Gay of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Meredith Hardy Vogler and husband, Mosby of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren, George Olin Hardy V and wife, Amy, Amelia Kathryn, John Mosby and Whitley Anne Vogler, Hillary Gay and Emily Kellogg Hardy; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Emily Johnson; brothers, E. HECHT
Arnold Hecht, 85, of Richmond, formerly of Norfolk, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Libby) Hecht; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Alan Wagner, Barbara and Kendall Edwards and Sharon and Andy Trimmer; five grandchildren, Karen Wagner, Lauren and Brittany Trimmer and Melissa and Aaron Edwards; and one brother, Leon Hecht of New York. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Sunday at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue. Interment 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. Mr. Hecht was a WWII U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, former owner of Hecht's Jewelers in Norfolk, member of Temple Beth-El in Richmond, Beth-El Men's Club where he was financial secretary, and a member of the 5400 Men's Club of the JCC. HOLT
Garland Lee Holt, 94, of Midlothian, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 4, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise Buford Holt; daughter, Marguerite H. Nigro; son and daughter-in-law, Beverly Garland Holt and Margaret S. Holt; sisters, Doris H. Holtz and Coralee H. Delano; and two granddaughters, Kelly Danielle Brown and Leslie Blair Holt. Mr. Holt was a graduate of Roanoke College, an evening instructor of mathematics at VCU for 13 years, a retired chemist and supervisor at E.I. Dupont with 40 years of service, a 60-year member and Past Master of Manchester Lodge #14 AF & AM, and a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10) followed by a Masonic funeral service. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Phenix, Va. HOWARD
Roderick Winston Howard Sr. of 4600 Whitestone Drive, Richmond, known as "Rod" Howard, departed this life April 1, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Roscoe C. Howard Sr.; and two sons, Ramon and Roderick Jr. An educator and professional broadcast journalist, Mr. Howard worked closely for three years in New York with Arthur Ashe, researching and writing Ashe's three-volume encyclopedic treatise and reference work, "A Hard Road to Glory: A History of the African-American Athlete." In the Acknowledgements of A "Hard Road to Glory", Ashe wrote, "Rod Howard is now a virtual walking encyclopedia of information about black athletes, especially those in college." He began his career as a copy editor for WCVE - TV in Chesterfield County, Va.; then he moved into radio news broadcasting in Winston-Salem, N.C. Later, he became a popular sportscaster at radio stations in Shreveport, La. and Tallahassee, Fla. He was a noted radio announcer for VSU sports events. Rod began his teaching career in the fall of 1989 as a faculty member, teaching English and Journalism in the Department of Languages and Literature at Virginia State University (VSU). Most recently, he taught in the City of Richmond at John Marshall and Thomas Jefferson high schools and the Adult Career Development Center (ACDC), where he taught senior English. Rod Howard received his high school diploma from Culver military Academy (Culver, Indiana) in 1973, and he completed the B.S. Degree from the University of Richmond in 1979. He was granted the Master of Arts Degree from Butler University in 1989 and engaged in further study toward the Master of Education Degree at VSU, with a concentration in English. He was a member of Pi Lambda Theta, International Honor Society and Professional Association in Education, Delta Zeta Chapter, VSU. He is survived by his loving wife, Ramona Y. Howard; a daughter, Angel Faith Howard; a son, Roderick W. Howard II; mother, Dr. Vivian G. Howard; sister, Linda G. Howard, Esq. of New York; brother, Roscoe C. Howard Jr., Esq. of Lawrence, Kansas; aunt, Alyce G. Willis; uncle, Francis Moore; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, among them, C. Ryan and Adam Howard of Lawrence Kansas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas and Mary Johnson; three sisters-in-law, Deborah Ryan Howard of Lawrence, Kansas, Rose Mary (William) Hennessey of New York and Angela T. (Lamont) Knight; two brothers-in-law, Thomas J. Johnson (Cheryl) and Jerome Johnson (Michelle); and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral service will held Monday, April 8, 11 a.m. at New Deliverance Evangelistic Church, 1701 Turner Rd., where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral service. Bishop Gerald O. Glenn, pastor, officiating. Interment Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, Petersburg, Va. Family friends and organizations assemble at the Church 10:45 a.m. Monday. Dinah S. Jones of Emporia departed this life April 2, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; and daughter, Almeda Jones. She is survived by three sons, George Jones of Pittsburgh, Pa., William Jones Bey (Ann) of Richmond, Va. and Edward Jones of Emporia, Va.; three daughters, Alice Maultsby (Julius) of Newark, N.J., Vivian Check (Clifford) and Julia Jones, both of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Carolyn Irving of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, one devoted niece, Erma Mervin of Washington, D.C.; other relatives and friends. Departed this life suddenly Wednesday, April 3, 2002, Mary James Jones, 59, of Richmond, Va. She is survived by her husband, Junious Leroy Jones; two daughters, Marjorie J. Robertson and Tracie J. Smither; three grandchildren, Leslie and Brandon Crawley, Ashley Smither; son-in-law, Alonzo Robertson; sisters, Ella Henson, Dorothy Roane and Charlene Redford; brothers, Charles and Luther James; brothers-in-law, Leslie Henson, Ernest Redford, William Jones, and Thomas Jones; sisters-in-law, Bessie and Frances James; a host of relatives and friends. LEWIS
Damion Lewis Sr. of Richmond departed this life Thursday, April 4, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

LEWIS
Dr. Jason Lewis, born September 16, 1915 in Lewistown, Maine, died April 2, 2002. He is survived by a son, Steven N. Lewis; daughter, Karen R. Lewis; daughter-in-law, Cheryl B. Lewis; stepson, David Barber; stepdaughter, Lisa Sanford; eight grandchildren, four great-granddaughters; brother, Howard Lewis of Providence, R.I.; sister, Ruth Abrams of Lauderhill, Fla.; and dear friend and companion, Rosemarie Tilney. Dr. Lewis was educated at Bates College, graduating in 1937, Harvard Dental School, and University of Maryland. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 and was a Major in the Dental Corps during WWII. He was a pediatric dentist in private practice in Richmond from 1948 to 1988 and served on the faculty of the MCV Dental School from 1948 to 1960. Dr. Lewis was the President of the Richmond Dental Society, Founder and President of the Southeastern Pediatric Association, and President and Fellow of Virginia State Dental Association. He was a member of the State Board of Health (Medicaid), Richmond Board of Health and Chairman of the Fluoridation Committee of the City of Richmond. Dr. Lewis was the founder of the Tuesday Club, member of the Rotary Club, Sertoma, and board member of the Navy League. He was a member of the International College of Dentists and American College of Dentists. He was on the Board at the Children's Museum and Temple Beth Ahabah. Dr. Lewis was a member of Temple Mishkan Israel, the National Historical Railway Society, the Virginia Museum, the Engineer's Club and the Jewish Community Center. He was also on the Children's Hospital Dental Staff, involved with the McKee Dental Study Club, member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon-Scholastic, Alpha Omega Fraternity and a Haiti Dental Volunteer. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Beth Ahabah, 1111 W. Franklin St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Temple Beth Ahabah.

LONG
Gerald Talley "Jerry" Long, age 59, of Hopewell, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 in John Randolph Medical Center. He was born May 9, 1942 in Hopewell, the son of Dorothy Talley Long and the late Carl L. Long. Jerry was the owner of G&L Towing and an avid NASCAR fan. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Michael and Jeremy Long; a sister, Judy Gill, all of Hopewell; and three grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Gould Chapel, Nelsen Funeral Home, Hopewell. A celebration of life service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell. MILLS
Mrs. Pearl Elizabeth Mullins Mills, age 90, departed this life peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 4, 2002. She was born in Skipwith, Va. on December 29, 1911, one of five brothers and sisters. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 63 years, A. Franklin Mills. She is survived by her sister, Blanche Roberts. She leaves on this earth her son, Wallace F. Mills and his wife, Judith of Richmond; and her daughter, Vivian M. Barnes of Newport News; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Mrs. Mills will be remembered by the abundant gardens tended by herself and her husband and shared with neighbors and friends through the years. The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Providence United Methodist Church, 901 South Providence Rd., where services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

PEERY
Billie Body Peery, 85, widow of Edwin (Ned) George Peery, died on Thursday, March 28, 2002. She was a native of Birmingham, Ala. and resided in Roanoke, Va. for 60 years. She was an employee of Lazarus, Inc. for 30 years until her retirement in 1994. Her immediate survivors are her son, T. Ritchie Peery D.D.S. and his wife, Betsy J. Peery of Richmond, Va.; two grandsons, David Laird Peery of Washington, D.C. and Edwin George Peery of Gainesville, Fla. A private graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 2 at Hollywood Cemetery. RESNICK
Helen Byrd Lewit Resnik, 73, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 after a brief illness in Jacksonville, Fla. Born in Richmond, she lived most of her life here and was a retired State employee. She moved to Jacksonville in 1993 and was well known and loved by the customers of Byrdie's Antiques. Helen was a member of Temple Beth Shalom, the Women of the Moose and was very active in the Mandarin Senior Center. She loved bowling, playing cards and other games, and was a fixture at the Beth Shalom Bingo games. Survivors include her children, Lynn Cantor (Mickey), David Resnick (Allison), Jack Resnick and Andy Resnick (Anita); brother, Julius "Bud" Lewit; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Rabbi Barton Leftin will lead memorial services at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in the Chapel of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home at 4115 Hendricks Ave. in Jacksonville (904-355-5641). In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association.

SADLER
Percy L. Sadler, 81, of Victoria, Va., died Thursday, April 4, 2002. He was an overseas Army veteran of the Pacific Theater during World War II, a charter member of Lunenburg County VFW Post 9954 and former employee of the Virginian Railroad for twenty-two years. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Sadler; three daughters, Dale Elder of Victoria, Vanger Smith of La Crosse, Irma Austin of Victoria; a son, Steve Sadler of Victoria; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Lane Sadler. The family will receive friends Saturday (today), 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, Victoria, Va. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 7, 2 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria. Memorial contributions may be made to the Victoria Fire and Rescue Squad.

Mary Gurkin Wagner, 95, of Richmond, widow of Fred M. Wagner, died Friday, April 5, 2002. She is survived by two nieces, Sandra Graves of Maxton, N.C. and Mary Buxton of Barker, Texas; and five nephews, Charles Gurkin of Winston-Salem, N.C., William Gurkin of Laurinburg, N.C., James Gurkin of Austin, Texas, Donald Gurkin of Plymouth, N.C. and Phillip Gurkin of Dunn, N.C. Mrs. Wagner was a member of Reveille United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in Westhampton Memorial Park. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue.
