John Chandler

VERNON HILL - John Thomas Chandler, 75, 14238 Mountain Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 1996, in the residence of his daughter in Ridgeway.

Born Oct. 12, 1920, in Halifax County, he was a son of George Washington Chandler and Mary Edna Slaydon Chandler.

He was married to Marguerite Spencer Chandler, who predeceased him.

He was self-employed as a mechanic. He was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Kuland. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Mounce of Ridgeway; a sister, Kathleen C. Chandler of Vernon Hill; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service, with military rites, will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Highland Burial Park in Danville by the Rev. T.H. Bumpus and Pastor Lee Hendricks. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the cemetery .

The family will also receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Tomlinson Funeral Home in Ridgeway, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Route 1, Wind Dancer Lane, Ridgeway.

Ralph "Pete" Gill

Ralph W. "Pete" Gill, 81, 1518 Washington St., died Monday, Oct. 7, 1996, in his residence.

Born Oct. 16, 1914, in Bristol, he was a son of Lee Kaylor and Bessie Gill Kaylor.

He was married to Ethel Gertrude Pippin Gill, who died Feb. 28, 1995.

He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church for 50 years.

Prior to his retirement in 1979, he was employed by Dan River Inc. for 37 years as a loom fixer.

Survivors include a daughter, Irene Moorefield of Danville; a step-sister, Lizzie Vest of Bristol; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Harold S. Gill; two step-brothers, Verle Kaylor and Everett Kaylor; and by a half-brother, Hugh Kaylor.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry J. Edmonds. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at his daughter's residence, 204 Freeze Road, Danville.

Cassie Townes

CHATHAM - Cassie Ruth Townes, 74, 406 North Main St., died Saturday, Oct. 5, 1996, in her residence.

Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William and Daisy Payne.

She was married to Clarence Townes, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Clarence Townes Jr. of the residence, Ronnie Townes of Philadelphia, William Townes of Summerville, S.C., and Christopher Townes of Hurt; a brother, Robert Lee Payne of Roanoke; three sisters, Minnie Brown of Warren, Ohio, Rosa Lanier of Blairs, and Elizabeth Fitzgerald of Washington, D.C.; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. H.G. McGhee. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 6-7 tonight at Howerton Funeral Home in Chatham, and other times at the residence.

James Jones Sr.

James G. Jones, 76, 7197 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following three months of declining health.

Born March 12, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Bennie James Jones and Lilly Maude Pulliam Jones.

On May 31, 1940, he was married to Gladys Moore Jones, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he had previously farmed. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Inc. for 28 years.

He was also a member of Westover Baptist Church.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Gladys Jean "Cookie" Hardy of Eden, N.C.; three sons, James G. "Butch" Jones Jr. and Harold Wayne "Chickie" Jones, both of Danville, and Jackie Lee Jones of Dry Fork; three sisters, Viola J. Griffith of Raleigh, N.C., and Mildred J. Bray and Melba J. Coleman, both of Danville; two brothers, Hugh Swanson Jones of Eden, N.C., and Willie A. Jones of Axton; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion and the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Ethel Mills

The funeral for Ethel Bradner Mills, 60, 851 Melrose Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Robert A. Miller. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

She died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1996, in Stratford Health Center, following two years of declining health.

Born March 4, 1936, in the Glenwood community of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Bradner and Janie Custer Bradner Fearing.

In December 1956, she was married to Leslie Wayne Mills, who survives.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she attended Third Avenue Christian Church. She was employed by the Danville Public School System, where she worked in the cafeteria at O.T. Bonner Junior High School.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Janette M. Baradell of Collinsville; two sisters, Frances B. Edwards of Danville and Doris B. McCracken of Coco, Fla.; and one grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gene Tarpley Jr.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Gene T. Tarpley Jr., 31, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996, in Halifax Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1965, in Warwick, R.I., he was a son of Gene Tarpley Sr. and Norma Walker Tarpley, who survive.

He was employed as a landscaper.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two sons, Martell Tarpley of Daytona Beach and Startavois Tarpley of New Smyrna Beach; three daughters, Ashlee Freeman of Jacksonville, Yashieka Tarpley of New Smyrna Beach, and Leeandra Tarpley of Daytona Beach; his paternal grandmother, Leeaner Tarpley of Dry Fork, Va.; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Culton of Charleston, S.C.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel in Danville, Va. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at 736 Pleasant Gap Drive, Dry Fork.

Ida Ward

GRETNA - Ida Bell Stone Ward, 79, 2804 Franklin St. N.E., Washington, D.C., and formerly of Route 4, Gretna, died Monday, Oct. 7, 1996, in her residence.

Born April 12, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Boggie Stone and Edith Robertson Stone.

She was married to Lloyd Andrew Ward, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to Washington, D.C., she became affiliated with Isle of Patmos Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ollie Ward of Washington, D.C., and Emmett Ward of Virginia Beach; a sister, Sallie Kate Rosser Winn of Williamsburg; and four grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Norman Ray Ward.

The funeral will be conducted noon Saturday from Union Missionary Baptist Church in Gretna by the Rev. Walter Coles. Burial will be in the Ward Family cemetery.

The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Miller Funeral Home of Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Cheek

Willie Booth Cheek, 775 Melrose Ave., died Thursday, Oct. 10, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 30, 1911, in Milton, N.C., she was a daughter of Isaac Bunch Booth and Willie Hunter Booth.

She was married to Henry Cheek, who survives.

She was a member of First Methodist Temple, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

She was also secretary of Gideon Bibles and chaplain of D.A.V.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Hunter Marie Hall and Helen Cheek Reese, both of Blairs; a sister, Evelyn B. Gusler of Milton, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Linwood Booth Cheek, a brother, Gordon Isaac Booth, a sister, Reocey B. McCann, and by a granddaughter.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Gary Briden and the Rev. Jack Waddell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Clifton 'Crook' Fitzgerald

CHATHAM - Clifton "Crook" Fitzgerald, 64, 1497 Abbott Place, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 6, 1932, he was a son of Jacob Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Palmer Fitzgerald.

He was married to Revena Womack Fitzgerald, who survives.

He was a member of Shockoe Missionary Baptist Church and Shockoe Masonic Lodge No. 244.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, Clifton Wayne Fitzgerald of Blairs, Dennis Ray Fitzgerald, Allen Floyd Fitzgerald, Kim Fitzgerald, and Elvis Fitzgerald, all of Chatham; four daughters, Elizabeth Fitzgerald Mayo of Java, Vickie Fitzgerald Dillard of Reidsville, N.C., Velma Jean Fitzgerald and Juanita Fitzgerald, both of Chatham; three brothers, Freddie Fitzgerald of Danville, Mervin Fitzgerald of Blairs and Jessie Fitzgerald of Java; six sisters, Clara Hairston of Blairs, Diane Wise of Brooklyn, N.Y., Patricia Pope of Java, Pamela Cooper of Colonial Heights, Ramona Jones and Irene Logan, both of Chester, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Shockoe Baptist Church in Java by the Rev. George Pass.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

George Fitzgerald

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - George Fitzgerald, 75, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 1996.

Born Dec. 25, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of John and Eva Fitzgerald.

Survivors include two sons, Jessie Fitzgerald and James Fitzgerald, both of Toledo, Ohio; three daughters, Nannie Cunningham and Shirley Oliver, both of Toledo, Ohio, and Rebecca Fitzgerald of Philadelphia; five brothers, Wilma Fitzgerald, Russell Fitzgerald and Irvin Fitzgerald, all of Chatham, Va., William Fitzgerald of Mount Vernon, and John Fitzgerald of Youngstown, Ohio; three sisters, Pear Perry of Mount Vernon, Betsy Gregory of Toledo, Ohio, and Versie Fitzgerald of Baltimore; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Rosebud Baptist Church by the Rev. Silas Moore. Burial will be in the Fitzgerald Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fitzgerald in Chatham.

Haley Fowler

Haley M. Fowler, 91, formerly of 106 Schoolfield Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center following ten years of declining health.

Born March 28, 1905, in Ararat, she was a daughter of Clearn Marshall and Loudela Marshall.

She was married to Frank James Fowler, who died April 12, 1983.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lillie Mae Fowler Coleman of Danville; three sisters, Mary Matkins of West Virginia, Nellie Bowman of Collinsville, and Mable Bowman of Mount Airy, N.C.; a brother, Clinton Marshall of Ararat; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Turbyfill and the Rev. Dr. John Larue. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 914 Greenwood Ave.

Leonard Loftis

Leonard Earl Loftis, 64, 224 Thrush St., died Thursday, Oct. 10, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.

Born March 22, 1932, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Thomas K. Loftis and Mamie Page Loftis.

On March 24, 1951, he was married to Nancy Jordan Loftis, who survives.

He spent his entire life in Danville. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Disston Corp. for 29 years. He was also a member of Saint Marks Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Sandra Loftis of Danville; three sons, Michael Loftis, Donald Loftis, and Phillip Loftis, all of Danville; two brothers, Haywood E. Loftis of Landover, Md., and Tommy Lee Loftis of Danville; a sister, Dorothy L. Tickle of Danville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Henry W. Taylor. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

John Mitchell

John Anthony Mitchell, 25, 128 Girard St., died Saturday, Oct. 5, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 28, 1971, in Danville, he was a son of Robert Wallace Sr. and Gloria Mitchell Wallace, who survive.

He was employed by Durham Hosiery Mill Inc., Danville Division.

In addition to his parents of Danville, he is survived by a sister, Tawanda Agee of Killeen, Texas; and a brother, Robert Wallace Jr. of Danville.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Rehobeth Holiness Church on East Thomas Street by the Rev. Tonya Carter. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
