Retired judge R.T. Vaughan Sr. dies at age 83
Aug 21, 2003
Robert Turnbull Vaughan Sr., a retired General District Court judge in Virginia's 10th Judicial Circuit, died Wednesday in his native South Boston. He was 83.
Mr. Vaughan, a general-practice lawyer appointed to the bench in 1978 to serve Halifax and Mecklenburg counties, retired in 1985.
Born in South Boston just days before his young father's death in 1920, Mr. Vaughan was descended from a long line of lawyers on his mother's side. After his 1942 graduation from Washington & Lee University, he earned a degree from the university's law school in 1944, returning to South Boston to practice with James S. Easley.
"He had opportunities to practice in other places, but his family was from Southside Virginia and he aspired to be a part of that kind of community," said a son, Robert Turnbull Vaughan Jr. of Danville.
Prior to his tenure in the 10th Judicial District, Mr. Vaughan was a part-time justice presiding over South Boston's police court for 18 years while maintaining a practice with what was then known as Easley, Edmunds & Vaughan.
"He graduated from W&L at the top of his class and was regarded by lawyers here as one of the smartest attorneys this area has ever produced," said his former law partner Frank M. Slayton, a retired judge and a former member of the House of Delegates. "He was particularly good at appellate work and argued in front of the state Supreme Court at least a dozen times."
After stepping down as a judge, he was with Vaughan, Slayton & Bennett for several more years.
Mr. Vaughan was a former member of the Halifax County School Board and a member of Virginia State Bar Council from 1970 to 1975.
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Virginia "Jennie" Estes Vaughan; two daughters, Mary Turnbull Vaughan Simmons of Crewe and Margaret Harrison Vaughan Miller of Waynesboro; three more sons, Aaron Hugh Vaughan of Atlanta, John H.E. Vaughan of Ann Arbor, Mich., and David Michael Vaughan of Springfield; a sister, Mary Harrison Vaughan Driscoll of South Boston; and 15 grandchildren.
