Carl McNichols

BLAIRS - Carl Thomas McNichols, 82, 1441 Malmaison Road, died Monday, Oct. 14, 1996, near his residence, as the result of a tractor accident.

Born July 26, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Barney McNichols and Nora Farthing McNichols.

On Dec. 24, 1939, he was married to Margaret Dodd McNichols, who survives.

He spent his entire life in the Malmaison community. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Mills for 40 years.

He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. For many years, he served as the Royal Ambassador director for the church.

He was also past master of Carter Masonic Lodge and Kent Masonic Lodge, and past district deputy grand master of the 38th Masonic District. He was also a member of Danville Consistary Scottish Rite.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of Blairs, survivors include two sons, Carl Thomas McNichols Jr. of Jefferson, Ga., and Danny Bruce McNichols of Danville; a daughter, Susan McNichols Babick of Chesapeake; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Cecil Tucker

HURT - Cecil Ray Tucker, 46, 4357 Roark Road, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 1996, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Sept. 13, 1950, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lillie Mae Tucker, who survives, and Clyde Tucker.

He was married to Caryleen Tucker, who survives.

He was employed by Ross Laboratories in Altavista. He was also a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother of Hurt and his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Dwayne C. Tucker, Keith S. Tucker and Jason Ray Tucker, all of the residence; a daughter, Carleesha Rena Tucker of the residence; four brothers, Harry Tucker of Plainfield, N.J., Gordon Tucker of Gretna, Frank Tucker of Burlington, Vt., and Clyde Tucker Jr. of New Jersey; five sisters, Elsie Dickerson, Barbara Ann Patterson Jordan, and Leona Cunningham, all of Hurt, Shirley Ralston of Plainfield, N.J., and Madeline Tucker of New York; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna by the Rev. Jimmie Tarpley. Burial will be in the Tucker Family cemetery.

Sharldean Waters

CLINTON, MD. - Sharldean Gunn Waters, 31, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 1996, in Washington, D.C.

Born Jan. 17, 1965, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Frances and George Gunn, who survive.

She was married to Darryl R. Waters, who survives.

She was employed by Nortel Corp. as a financial analyst. She was of the Pentecostal faith.

In addition to her parents and her husband, survivors include a daughter, Darrelle Monet Waters; three brothers, Donnel Gunn, Rick Gunn and George Gunn; and a sister, Yvette Hughes.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Clinton. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial cemetery.

The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Gertrude Wilson

AXTON - Gertrude Pruitt Wilson, 75, Route 2, Axton, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 1996, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.

Born Jan. 8, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Pittman Pruitt and Annie Mae Wray Pruitt.

She was married to Willie Joe Wilson, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Axton Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Nellie Barker of Axton and Mary Norman of Lexington, N.C.; eight sons, Jack Wilson and William Wilson, both of the residence, Pete Wilson and Lonnie Wilson, both of Axton, Johnnie Wilson of Martinsville, Bernard Wilson of Stuart, Harry Wayne Wilson of Ringo, and Edward Wilson of Christiansburg; three sisters, Virginia Ferrell, Irene Matherly and Inez Bailey, all of Danville; four brothers, Robert Pruitt of Martinsville, Clarence Pruitt, Buck Pruitt and Jessie Pruitt, all of Danville; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from McKee Funeral Chapel in Martinsville by the Rev. Oscar Adams. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

William "Mike" Betts

William "Mike" Raleigh Betts, died Friday, Oct. 11, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 7, 1913, in Halifax, he was a son of Clem Betts and Mary Sue Anderson Betts.

Survivors include two daughters, Daisy Mallone of Sutherlin and Nannie Patterson of Cascade; four sons, James Betts of Danville, Abraham Betts of Sutherlin, Louis Betts of Chicago, and Curtis Betts of Mablewood, N.J.; six sisters, Mattie Lewis, Lena Murphy, and Naaie Onie Lipcomb, all of Albany, N.Y., Hester Green of Hartford, Conn., Nannie Willie Selton of Houston, and Sally Hood of Danville; 34 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and 45 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday from White Stone Holiness Church in Sutherlin by Elder William R. Yarbrough. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Bunce

Doris Lumpkin Bunce, 88, 2526 North Main St., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following 12 years of declining health.

Born March 2, 1908, in Danville, she was a daughter of Charles Lumpkin and Nannie Hall Lumpkin.

On Nov. 18, 1978, she was married to Edwin F. Bunce, who died in October of 1991.

She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by C&P Telephone Co. for 43 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a charter member of the Pilot Club.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Mary B. Howard of Virginia Beach; and a stepson, Richard Bunce of Richmond.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lee Ellison.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of Shirley Reynolds, 2026 Carter St.

Emmett Glasgow Sr.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - William Emmett Glasgow Sr., 85, 3933 Jean St., died Monday, Oct. 14, 1996, in Jacksonville Hospital.

Born Oct. 4, 1911, in Danville, Va., he was a son of George Oliff Glasgow and Kate Hart Glasgow.

On Aug. 21, 1936, he was married to Mildred Poteot Glasgow, who survives.

He was educated in the Danville schools. He was also a member of Silver Glen Baptist Church.

During World War II, he served in the Navy. After service, he was employed by the Navy Department in Washington, D.C., and later in Jacksonville.

In addition to his wife of Jacksonville, survivors include a son, W. Emmett Glasgow Jr. of Jacksonville; three daughters, Lizbeth G. Nickolson and Jennifer G. Hayes and Joan G. Howell, all of Jacksonville; a brother, Paul W. Glasgow of Casselberry; a sister, Ann G. Ferrell of Danville, Va.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Town and Country Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ruby Hudson

CHATHAM - Ruby Elliott Hudson, 78, 1932 Irish Road, died Monday, Oct. 14, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 17, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert E. Elliott and Louise Johnson.

On Aug. 28, 1940, she was married to Tilton Owen Hudson, who died April 6, 1996.

She lived in Hopewell for a few years before moving back to Pittsylvania County. For many years, she helped her father at his general store in Bear Skin Valley Park.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include four daughters, Carole H. Cato of Charlotte, N.C., Janice H. Simmons of Lynch Station, Betty H. Brown of Willow Springs, N.C., and Nancye H. Pennell of Concord, N.C.; a son, T.O. Hudson of Chatham; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Chatham by the Rev. William C. Thomas.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Lillie Riggins

Lillie Williams Riggins, 68, 392 Juless St., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following five years of declining health.

Born Aug. 8, 1928, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Everett Williams and Virginia Rankin Williams.

She was married to Elmer Riggins, who survives.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was also of the Holiness faith.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Marvin Everett Riggins and Jerry Wayne Riggins, both of Danville, and Billy Eugene Riggins of Japan; four daughters, Shirley R. McKinney, Hazel C. Riggins, Betty R. Hawkins, and Teresa R. Akers, all of Danville; two brothers, Thomas Williams of Alexandria and Walter Williams of Danville; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Jimmy L. Riggins, a sister, Bettie Quintana, and a brother, Richard Williams.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee D. Ellison. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a son, Marvin Riggins, 2039 Westover Drive.

Lorraine Tompkins

PLANT CITY, FLA. - Lorraine Marie Tompkins, 71, died Monday, Oct. 14, 1996.

She was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Boston.

She was married to Harmon "Tom" Dean Tompkins, who survives.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Linda Marie Woods of Vernon, Conn., and Darlene Ann Calvert of Danville, Va.; a son, Jeffrey Eber Tompkins of Danville, Va.; a sister, Jean Bender of Coventry, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.

The body was cremated.

James Wise

CHATHAM - James Henry Wise, 75, Route 1, Box 16-A, died Friday, Oct. 11, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Cary Wise and Althea Pounds Wise.

He was married to Essie Mae Walker Wise, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Inez Anderson of Sutherlin, Yvonne Crews, Rose Chaney, and Rosa Henry, all of Danville; seven sons, Keith Wise, Robert Wise, and Roy Wise, all of Chatham, Moses Wise and Willie Junior Wise, both of Danville, Albert Wise of Toledo, Ohio, and Joe Louis Wise of Halifax; a brother, Elder Melvin Wise of Danville; and two sisters, Janet Wimbush of Ringgold and Flossie Daniels of Alexandria, Ala.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Church by Bishop Theodore Jones. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
