Anna James

Anna Lucille James, 85, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at her residence.

Born April 29, 1912, in Yadkin County, N.C., she was the daughter of Arthur Swain and Callie Denkins Swain.

She was married to Norman Guy James, who predeceased her.

She worked for Dan River Mills Inc.

She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.

She was a member of the Pocahontas.

She is survived by a son, Earl S. "Jack" James of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Mary J. Brandon of Alton; two sisters, Hattie Swain of Danville and Ruth Gayle of Copperscove, Texas; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Arthur T. James; and two brothers, Curtis R. Swain and Fred Swain.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. John Meadows.

Barker Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of all arrangements.

Malachi Williamson

Malachi Williamson Jr., 20, 210 Stewart Street, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 at his residence.

Born June 27, 1977 in Danville, he was the son of Malachi Williamson Sr. and Stella Louise Fitz, both of Danville.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a brother, Terry Lee Williamson of Danville; two sisters, Tasha Renee Williamson and Salina Ann Watkins, both of Danville; a paternal grandmother, Nettie Williamson of Danville; a step-grandfather, Thomas Stephens of Milton, N.C.; and several other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 338 Church Street.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Apostolic Church by the Rev. William Thomas. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Carl Campbell

Carl Jefferson Campbell, 75, 117 Alpine Drive, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Sept. 25, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of Carl Jefferson Campbell Sr. and Elsie Bolt Campbell.

He was married to Mozelle McDowell Campbell, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

He lived most of his life in Danville, where he spent his early years in the Schoolfield community. He was an agent for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia for 15 years. He was later the owner and operator of Aaron Tarpley Cleaners.

He was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church, the VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647, and also a member of the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.

In addition to his wife of Danville, he is survived by a daughter, Penny Campbell Cummings of Odenton, Md.; a brother, Bernard Campbell of Jacksonville, Fla.; a half-sister, Carolyn McIvers of Richmond; three step-sisters, Mary Fulton of Danville and Lossie Hayes and Joyce McBride, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his step-mother, Nellie Campbell.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at the chapel of the Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Jack N. Waddell. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the residence, 117 Alpine Drive.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Elliott

AXTON - Virginia Ethylene Smith Elliott, 65, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, at the residence of her daughter in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born April 16, 1932, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of Guy Williams and Alice Vipperman Williams.

She was retired from DuPont Company and was a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Wright of Stuart, Charlene Jackson of Troutville, Cynthia Benson of Axton and Cheryl Strange of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, C.W. Elliott Jr. and Marty L. Elliott, both of Martinsville; three sisters, Thelma E. Smith of Sandy River and Shelva J. Goad and G. Ann Thompson, both of Stuart; four brothers, Otis W. Williams of Collinsville, Marvin G. Williams of Danville, C. Emmitt Williams of Norfolk and Arthur E. Williams of Patrick Springs; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Warren L. Smith; and a brother, Sparrell Williams.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. today at Axton Baptist Church by the Rev. Palmer Lowery. Entombment will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

McKee-Stone Funeral Services, Martinsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Lindsey

GLADYS - Robert Lafayette Lindsey, 85, Route 2, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at his residence.

Born Oct. 25, 1912, in Campbell County, he was a son of Robert A. Lindsey and Martha Walker Lindsey.

He was married to Lois Francis Lindsey, who survives.

He was a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Nash Wood and Timber Co.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Robert "Bob" Lindsey of Dry Fork; a daughter, Margaret Rogers of Dallas; a brother, Byrd Lindsey of Gladys; four sisters, Recie Elliott of Long Island, Mattie Holland of Altavista, and Katie Thurman and Katherine Eades, both of Gladys; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Kedron Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Don Cockes.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Finch & Finch Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Anthony Powell

Anthony Ray Powell, 27, 178 Gray St., died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 21, 1970, in Danville, he was a son of James W. Powell and Linda Williams.

He was married to Betty Henderson Powell, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, mother of Danville and father of Dry Fork, survivors include a son, Anthony Logan of Danville; a daughter, Rachawn Williams of Landover, Md.; two brothers, Dontay Williams of Danville and Justin Powell of Dry Fork; five sisters, Dwaynette Williams and Bridget Williams, both of Danville, Bonita Royall of Woodbridge, Anita Powell of Abington, Penn., and Crystal Powell of Dry Fork; and his maternal grandmother, Edith Williams of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. London Walker. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 111 North Hills Court Apt. 1, Danville.

Kathleen Walton

Kathleen D. Walton, 85, 3545 Mount Cross Road, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 15, 1997, at Stratford Health Center after a decline in health since 1993. She had been in and out of the hospital and Stratford Health Center since Oct. 9, 1997.

Born Jan. 19, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of King David Dickerson and Roberta Cox Dickerson.

On July 1, 1933, she was married to Robert Ned Walton, who survives.

A resident of the Mount Cross community of Danville and Pittsylvania County for most of her life, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the former Southall Baptist Church, now Westover Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include five daughters, Glenn W. Carter and Carolyn W. Carter, both of El Centro, Calif., and Lois W. Rye and Patsy W. Penninger, both of Danville, and Dorothy W. Ricketts of Chatham; a son, Robert N. Walton Jr. of Danville; a sister, Olene D. East of Eden, N.C.; two brothers, Larry Dickerson of Danville and Noel Dickerson of Dry Fork; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber, the Rev. Robert Vermillion and the Rev. Gil Hawks. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barbara Wimmer

ROANOKE - Barbara Hall Wimmer, 69, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997.

She was a retired employee from Singer Furniture Company.

Survivors include a son, Donald W. Wimmer of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Lauren Renee Wimmer of Eden, N.C.; a sister, Gloria H. Smith of Roanoke; a brother, Donald P. Hall of Sykesville, Md.; and her stepmother, Beatrice Hall of Raleigh, N.C.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park in Danville.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Oakey's North Chapel.

Gertrude Hopkins

STUART - Gertrude H. Hopkins, 90, 116 Park St., died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997.

She is survived by her husband, Coy B. Hopkins of Stuart; a daughter, Peggy Ayers of Winnsboro, S.C.; and three grandsons.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Services in Stuart.

The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
