PURYEAR
Departed this life May 3, 2002, Deacon Leary W. Puryear Sr. of 4950 Shaleigh Lane. He was preceded in death by his son, Darryl R. Puryear. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Dorothy M. Puryear; one daughter, Inez Patrice Coleman; four sons, Leary W. Jr., Ronald R., Linwood B., and Julius N. Puryear; 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several cousins; four daughters-in-law, Madames Barbara, Christita B., Barbara W. and Rosemary W. Puryear; one son-in-law, Carlos Coleman Sr.; one sister-in-law, Marian T. Johnson; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Wednesday, 12 noon at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2300 Third Avenue, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. F. Todd Gray (pastor). Interment Washington Memorial park. Family, friends and organizations assemble at the church 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

ROBERTS
Rody R. Roberts Sr., age 87, went to be with the Lord on May 5, 2002. Survived by his loving wife, Valerie R. Roberts and their children, Rody R. Jr. and Barbara Roberts, Mary R. and Alfred Clark, Dennis C. Marshall and Patricia Garner (Boppa); also survived by his grandchildren, David and Mae Ruth Roberts, Stephen Roberts, Penny R. and Travis Hampton, Michael and Melissa Stoher, Glen and Angie Stoher and Elizabeth and Matthew Clark; as well as six great-grandchildren; also Stephany and Floyd Schrimsher. He will be remembered with love and affection. Mr. Roberts was a native of Scranton, Pa. During WWII he received a medical discharge from the Navy Seabees. He later retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections. The family will receive friends at the Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va. from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 7. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 8 at Ragland Memorial Baptist Church, Sandy Hook, Va., with burial at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Rev. Howard A. Baldwin Jr. will conduct the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ragland Memorial Baptist Church, Goochland, Va. 23063.

ROBERTSON
Thelma Mae Robertson, 87, of Williamsburg, died Saturday, May 4, 2002 after a lengthy illness. Born in Buckingham County, Va. on May 22, 1914, Thelma grew up in the town of Dillwyn with her parents, Waldo A. and Mary E. Maxey; and her sister, Virginia. She married T.C. Robertson of Salem, Va. on November 15, 1937. They had one son, Gary T.C., who died in 1990. A resident of York County since 1951, Mrs. Robertson was a longtime member of the Crooks Memorial United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer at Williamsburg Community Hospital for over 10 years. She is survived by her son and sister. A memorial service will be held Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002 at 7 p.m. at the Crooks Memorial UMC, with the Rev. David Hampton officiating. The family will receive friends following the church service. Interment will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery in Dillwyn, Va. Memorial donations may be made to the Crooks Memorial UMC - Van Fund, 204 Cook Road, Yorktown, Va. Bucktrout of Williamsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

SCHWARTZ
Charles (Steve) Schwartz, 57, suddenly passed on Monday, May 6, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Faye N. Schwartz; two sons, Stephen Douglas and Cory Evan James; a daughter, Donna Joy; stepchildren, Casey McWilliams, Jennifer Ritter and Gary McWilliams; five grandchildren; his father, Charles J. Schwartz; two brothers and three sisters. Mr. Schwartz was an active employee with over 35 years of service at duPont. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

SCOTT
George Emmett Scott, 80, of LaPorte, Ind., died May 5, 2002. Born in Richmond, Va. on June 21, 1921, he was the son of the late George B. and Lucy B. (Cross) Scott and was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosa Lee Walton. On June 28, 1946 he married Kay M. Seefeldt, who preceded him in death. Then on June 27, 1998 he married Betty Olsen, who also preceded him in death. Mr. Scott retired from the Whirlpool Corporation. He was a veteran of WWII and had received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech. Survivors include his daughters, Susan E. Snyder (Michael), and Jeanne A. Scott (Robin Dutton); son, G. Edward Scott (Sandy); two grandchildren, Ian and Elizabeth Snyder; and his brother, Thomas A. Scott (Betty) and sister, Betty Gray Faber (Lynn). Funeral services will be held in LaPorte, Ind. on Wednesday.

SHUTE
Mildred (Combs) Shute, 74, of Louisa, formerly of Ayer, Mass., died at home Wednesday, April 24, 2002. She was born September 29, 1927 in Phoenix, Ariz., the daughter of Martin and Margaret (Spaulding) Combs, and grew up in Arizona. She leaves four sons, a daughter, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A son, Robert Michael Shute, died on March 16, 1991. She was also predeceased by her former husband, Ernest C. Shute. Burial took place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ayer, Mass., on Wednesday, May 1. The family will receive visitors Tuesday, May 7 from 3 to 5 at 283 Captain Meade Rd., Louisa, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Special Olympics, P.O. Box 322, Hathorne, Mass. 01937-0322.

STUARD
James Franklin Stuard Jr., 83, of Richmond, born June 25, 1918 in Allen, Okla., died May 6, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Margaret W. Stuard; daughter, Barbara S. Walrod and her husband, Chet; son, James F. Stuard III and his wife, Linda; two grandchildren, Katie and James Walrod; sister, Margaret Gilbreath. Mr. Stuard graduated from Oklahoma A&M College, School of Engineering and was a WWII Navy veteran and also retired from duPont after 38 years. He also was a member of Bon Air Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Bon Air Baptist Church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bon Air Baptist Church Building Fund.

TURNER
Forrest J. "Bud" Turner, 80, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord May 6, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57, Dorise Turner. He is survived by his wife, June Narron Turner; children, John Turner, Lycia Frank and Javan Turner; stepchildren, Penny, Raymond and Vance Narron and Candy Duff; sister, Alma Gates; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a WWII Navy submarine veteran, serving aboard the USS Tarpon, a retiree of duPont with 30 years of service and a member of the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge No. 161. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (today). Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Hill Baptist Church, 3100 Courthouse Rd., Chesterfield, Va., 23236. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clover Hill Baptist Church Building Fund.

WAGGONER
Lorena Waggoner, 91, of Crewe, Virginia, died May 5, 2002 at Southside Community Hospital. Lorena was a native of Richwood, West Virginia. She was educated at Concord and Glenville Colleges and taught elementary school before moving to Virginia. She had lived in Crewe for over forty years and was a member of Gibson Memorial Episcopal Church. Lorena was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Rachel Puckett; her sisters, Loretta Puckett and Roberta Hinkle and her husband, Clarence Waggoner. She is survived by her niece, Henrietta King and her husband, Edward; cousins, Ralph Williams, Shirley Shirmeyer and Gloria Rigsby. A funeral service will be held at Gibson Memorial Episcopal Church in Crewe at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8. Graveside services will be conducted at Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood, West Virginia at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Nottoway County Emergency Squad, 501 E. Virginia Ave., Crewe, Virginia 23930 or Gibson Memorial Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 248, Kenbridge, Virginia 23944. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home.

WHITE
Clarence Monroe White Sr., 70, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord May 4, 2002. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife, Margaret; two devoted children, Betty W. Cooper and her husband, Billy, Ensign Clarence M. White Jr. of the United States Navy and his wife, Charlotte; two foster children, Delores Hickman and Leon Warlington; two sisters, Clara Cosby and Rena Cooper; one brother, Samuel White Sr.; mother-in-law, Ida Williams; 14 grandchildren, seven sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Remains rest at the F.E. Dabney Funeral Home, Henry Street, Ashland, where visitation will be held Wednesday 7 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services Thursday 1 p.m. at Abner Baptist Church, Glen Allen. Rev. Warren Lewis officiating, assisted by Rev. Jaimal C. Hayes, pastor. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to funeral service. The Dabneys, Morticians, in charge of arrangements.

WILKINS
Billie Morgan Wilkins, 77, of Warsaw, died May 6, 2002. Surviving are a daughter, Iris C. Peace and husband, James R. Peace, Richmond; sons, James R. Clarke and wife, Gail H. Clarke, King George, Edward W. Clarke and wife, Lora Clarke, Ft. Monroe; sister, Mildred Ann Mills, Clarksville, Tenn.; brother, William Morgan, Cumberland; grandchildren, Nicole and Nathan Clarke. Mrs. Wilkins was preceded in death by husbands, Loren Randolph Clarke and Andrew Carrington Wilkins; and brothers, Lewis, Conway, James and Ruben Morgan. Graveside services 3 p.m. Wednesday, Roseland Cemetery, Reedville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood.

APPICH
Charles William Appich Jr., 73, of Richmond, died Sunday, December 2, 2001. He was the retired President and co-owner of Emrick Chevrolet. Mr. Appich was a 1946 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and graduated from Virginia Tech in the Class of 1950. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was the recipient of a Bronze Star. Mr. Appich was an Elder and Trustee of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. He helped organize and served as Chairman of the Board of the Commonwealth Dealers Life Insurance Company. Mr. Appich was a member of the Commonwealth Club, the Richmond Gentry, Stingray Harbor Yacht Club, Joppa Lodge No. 40 AF&AM, Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and ACCA Temple Shrine. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean Ridenour Appich; one son, Charles W. Appich III and his wife, Sharon of Midlothian; three daughters, Mary A. Gray and her husband, George of Richmond, Ann A. Harrison and her husband, Billy of Birmingham, Ala., and Jeanie A. Kennedy and her husband, Wade of Richmond; 11 grandchildren, Blair and Chase Appich, George, Matthew, John and Gordon Gray, Graham, Will and Charles Harrison, Curt and Andrew Kennedy; his brother, Donald Leland Appich and his wife, Betty of Richmond; two nieces, two nephews, one great-niece, four great-nephews; and one cousin, Max Gasser of State College, Pa. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. ATKINS
Eleanor Glass Atkins, widow of Willie Atkins, of Midlothian, died Monday, December 3, 2001. She is survived by her son, Bill Atkins and his wife, Gayle; her brother, Charles W. Glass of Mechanicsville; three grandchildren, Billy and Brian Atkins and Robin A. Seward; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Katie Mae Ball quietly entered into eternal rest November 30, 2001. Her memories will live on in the hearts of her sons, Michael A. Ball and John W. Ball, Jr.; grandchildren. Ashley M. and Katlyn C. Howard W. Beck Sr.,70, of Richmond, died Sunday, December 2, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean E. Beck and is survived by his children, Howard "Bill" Jr. and his wife, Pat, Mary B. Haskins and her husband, Terry Sr. and Theresa Reams and her husband, Brent; grandchildren, Jason Beck, Terry Jr. and his wife, "Boo," Thomas and Wendy Haskins; four greatgrandchildren; and his brothers, Stewart Beck and his wife, Gladys and Robert Beck and his wife, Shirley. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and where a funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by interment in Dale Memorial Park.

Pastor Lena Townes Bright departed this life Decemebr 2, 2001. The staff of the W.S. Watkins Funeral Home is serving her family.

BUSH
Olive Elizabeth Bush, 78, of Chesterfield, died December 3, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Telford T. Bush. Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie B. Womack and her husband, Harry and Faye B. Bowling and her husband, Lee; two grandsons, Christopher Shawn and Shannon Lee Bowling; two granddaughters, Holly Elizabeth Walker and her husband, Michael and Heather Lee Womack; one great-granddaughter, Madison Elizabeth Womack; one sister, Martha Ann Burton; and one brother, Leonard L. Lewis. Mrs. Bush was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Happy Woodpeckers Homemaker's Club and the Chesterfield County Homemaker's Club. She was also a past volunteer of Children's Hospital. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday.
