Jack R. Bertron
Captain Jack R. Bertron, 79, of Bumpass, died Tuesday, September 9, 2003.
Funeral services, conducted by Father Rodney Rodis, were held at noon Saturday, September 13 at Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa. Interment with full military honors were held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 15 in Quantico National cemetery.
He is survived by a son, Jack Bertron Jr. of Alexandria; a daughter, Peggy Anderson of Manassas; two granddaughters, Patti Compton and Katharine Bertron; and two brothers, Walter, of Campbell, California, and Robert William of San Mateo, California.
Mr. Bertron was born July 8, 1924 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Helen Shuck Bertron.
He was schooled in San Mateo, California, where he met and later married his wife.
During World War II, in 1942, he volunteered for the Naval Aviation (V-5) Program, where he graduated as an ensign and naval aviator in 1944.
During his career as a naval aviator he was a flight instructor, an aircraft carrier pilot in the Korean Conflict, a Naval representative in the procurement of aircraft at the Douglas Plant in Los Angeles and various Naval Airstations and Staffs in the training and administration of the Naval Air Reserve.
His final active duty was at the Pentagon, where he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for the coordination, presentation, and justification of the Naval Reserve requirements. He retired with 28 years in the grade of Captain.
Mr. Bertron continued to serve his country working for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare as a management/budget analyst in the Office of the Inspector General until 1981.
After retiring, he assisted his wife in her antique business.
After moving to Lake Anna, he was the founder and first president of the Lake Anna Civic Association. He served on the Lake Anna Advisory Committee (counties of Louisa, Spotsylvania and Orange), and on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association. He also served as chairman for the Lake Anna Special Area Plan.
He was awarded the Daughters of American Revolution Medal of Honor for patriotism and community service.

Angela M. Carr
Angela Marie Carr, 34, of Fork Union, died Sunday, September 14, 2003.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. William Bess, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 17 at Memorial Baptist Church, Columbia. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her parents, George and Vicky Carr of Columbia; a son, Jeremy Sean Gibbs of Columbia; a daughter, Jessica Marie Carr of Columbia; a brother, Joseph Allen Carr of Claremont, Florida; and her paternal grandmother, Angeles M. Carr, of Palm Beach, Florida.
Ms. Carr was born October 25, 1968 in Maryland.
She was a computer operator for Apex and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Columbia.
Sheridan Funeral Home, Inc., Kents Store, handled the arrangements.

Archie E. Hix
Archie Edward “Fuzzy” Hix, of Louisa County, died Friday, September 12, 2003.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 15 at The Church of The Incarnation, Mineral. Interment was in Hillcrest cemetery, Louisa.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Reynolds Hix; two sons, Ronnie E. Hix and his wife, Marlene, and Danny Hix and his wife, Mary Jane; three daughters, Faye H. Grimm, Linda H. Pierce and Bonnie Sue Campbell and her husband, Mickey; a brother, Milton R. Hix; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hix was born in Louisa County, the son of the late Charles R. and Nettie Marsh Hix.
He worked in Louisa County as an animal control officer and was a lifelong member of The Church of The Incarnation.
Woodward Funeral Home, Inc., Louisa, handled the arrangements.

Lou W. Lewis IV
Lou William Lewis IV, of Richmond, died Friday, September 5, 2003.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. J. R. Coney, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 13 at New Line Baptist Church.
He is survived by four daughters, Tangina, Joy, Precious and LaTasha Lewis; three stepchildren, Jamar and Tarlicia Mosely and Amani Robinson; his father, Trustee Lou William Lewis III of Louisa; his mother, Joyce A. Lewis of Lanexa; four sisters, Mary Watkins and her husband, Kenneth, of Highland Springs, Shirley Atkinson and her husband, Kenneth, of Lanexa, Mattie Lewis of Quinton, and Tanya Lewis of Lanexa; two brothers, James Anderson of Louisa and Derrick Lewis of Lanexa; nine nephews; seven nieces; six uncles, William Anderson and his wife, Annie Mae, Clarence Anderson, David Lewis, Wayne Lewis and his wife, Linda, Adolph Anderson and Chestine Lewis; eight aunts, the Reverend Virginia Farmer, Sarah Towles and her husband, Ronnie, Amy Morris and her husband, Eli, Shirley Robinson, Delores Silencieux, Dorothy Anderson, Emily Clarke and her husband, Robert, and Eva Bonaparte; four great-uncles, Deacon James L. Minor and his wife, Geraldine, Emmett Anderson, Haywood Minor and Joe Minor and his wife, Vee; eight great-aunts, Caroline Davis, Daisy Kinney and her husband, Tom, Hannah Price, Mary Hughes and her husband, Ellis, Clady Watson and her husband, Herman, Carrie Thomas, Marie Thomas and Virginia Watson and her husband, Haywood; a devoted friend, Connie Robinson; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lou William Lewis II and Bessie Minor; his maternal grandparents, William and Rosa Anderson; and two uncles, Ben and Shirkey Lewis.
During his childhood year, he resided in Louisa County with his aunt, the Rev. Virginia Farmer and uncle, the late Moses S. Farmer Sr. He attended Louisa County Public Schools.
He joined New Line Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. H. W. Bradley, and was active in the church school, usher ministry, Sunbeam Choir and Unity Chorus.
He worked as a laborer for a number of years in the Richmond area.

Virgie D. Snow
Virgie Brookman Drumheller Snow, 91, of Fishersville, died Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at Shenandoah Nursing Home.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Wray Sherman and the Rev. Stuart Bridgman, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 13 at Hermitage Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Hermitage Church family.
She is survived by four sons, Carl Franklin Drumheller and his wife, Jacqueline, of Louisa, Ray Carthon Drumheller and his wife, Mary Alice, of Waynesboro, Glenn Edwin Drumheller and his wife, Catherine, of Staunton, and Charles David Drumheller and his wife, Ellen of New Hope; a stepson, Eugene Clifton Snow and his wife, Shirley, of Hampton; a stepdaughter, Gardenia Jenkins and her husband, Freddie, of Staunton; a brother, Lawrence A. Brookman of Bremo Bluff; three sisters, Minnie Wyant of Charlottes-ville, Inez E. Halterman of Palmyra and Mary E. Winston of Bremo Bluff; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Snow was born June 10, 1912, the daughter of the late Millard Miley and Loettie Glass Brookman. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Luther Drumheller; her second husband, Daniel G. Snow; three brothers, Andrew Brookman, Ammit Brookman and Benjamin Brookman; and two sisters, Irene E. Turner and Amilee Duncan.
She was a member of Hermitage Presbyterian Church and a retired nurse from Kings Daughter Hospital.
She was a quilt maker, an avid gardener and enjoyed arts and crafts.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hermitage Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 46 Hildebrand Church Rd., Waynesboro, VA 22980.

Betty W. Wilson
Betty Lee Womack Wilson, 71, of Orange, died Friday, September 5, 2003 at The Cedar Nursing Home, Charlottesville.
Funeral services, conducted by Elder John Marshall and Elder Gilbert Athey, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 9 at Free Union Church, Boswells Tavern. Interment was in Culpeper National cemetery, Culpeper.
She is survived by three sons, Jesse E. Womack of Beverly Hills, California, Rolando Wilson of Charlottesville and Gerome Hayes Wilson of Ruckersville; three daughters, Rolinda Mansfield and her husband, Evangelist Spurgeon Mansfield, of Louisa, Thomasine Wilson of Orange and LaWanda Quarles and her husband, Joseph, of Gordonsville; two brothers, Peter Womack of South Carolina and Don Womack of Norfolk; four sisters, Lucille Bland of Norfolk, Janice Martin of Chesapeake, Lena Womack of Norfolk and Patricia Toombs of Virginia Beach; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Wilson was born June 27, 1932 in Danville, the daughter of the late Robert H. and Savannah Cobb Womack. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roland Hayes Wilson.
Satchell’s Funeral Services handled the arrangements.

Robert W. Carder
Robert Warren Carder, 89, of Allen, Texas, died Tuesday, November 11, 2003.
Graveside services were held Friday, November 14 in St. Louis, Missouri.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rebecca Bibb Carder; a son, William Warren Carder and his wife, Cheryl, of Allen, Texas; a grandson, Dale William Carder of Madison, Wisconsin; a granddaughter, Lizabeth Ann Carder of Allen Texas; and two sisters, Hattie Carder Crebbs of Gordonsville and Lois Carder Collins of Richmond.
Mr. Carder was the son of the late Edgar Warren Carder and Lois Tillman Carder of Louisa County.
He graduated from Louisa County High School and then moved to Washington D.C., where he attended Columbia Technical School, George Washington University and Washington University.
He served six years in a topographic drafting position in the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
At the beginning of World War II, he returned to Washington D.C. to accept a cartographic mapping position with the Army Air Force. Subsequently, the entire office was transferred to St. Louis, Missouri were he resided for 60 years.
During his tenure, he served as program manager of the NASA contract for Apollo 17, which splashed down in the South Pacific and of the first NASA moon-mapping project.
Upon retirement in 1974, he was presented with the ACIC Meritorious Civilian Service Award in recognition of over 40 years of distinguished federal service.
