Elma L. Collins
Elma Lucille Collins, 91, of Gordonsville, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at her residence.
Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Sherman Collins and Pastor James T. Jackson, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 31 at Union Baptist Church, Gordonsville. Interment will be at Woodberry cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Linwood Collins Sr.; seven daughters, Marion Cowerd of Washington D.C., Frances C. Bowler of Gordonsville, Marie Collins of Gordonsville, Carolyn Brock of Standardsville, Doris Anthony of Louisa, Linda Lewis of Gordonsville and Lillian Wilson of Culpeper; four sons, James Price of Dale City, Ernest Linwood Collins Jr. of Philadelphia, Fred Collins Sr. of Gordonsville and Sherman Collins Sr. of Louisa; two brothers, Steve Robinson of Charlottesville and Jefferey Robinson of Gordonsville; four sisters, Louise Tate of Philadelphia, Shirley Robinson of Gordonsville, Elaine Robinson of Gordonsville and Kathy Terrell of Maryland; 35 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Collins was born September 18, 1916 in Louisa County, the daughter of the late Leonard Robinson and Beatrice Lewis Robinson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Floyd Collins; a brother, John Henry Robinson; and a sister, Martha Ann Cooke.
She was a member of Mt. Pisgma Baptist Church.

Benjamin S. Gershom
Benjamin Smith Gershom, 83, of Gordonsville, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at the Orange County Nursing Home.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Marilyn Spencer, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 30 at Gordonsville United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville.
The family will receive friends following the funeral service.
He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Alice Nalini Jesudian of Richmond and Emily Harini Thangiah of Gordonsville; a son-in-law, John Dinakar Thangiah; three grandchildren, Archana Jesudian McLoughlin, Beena Thangiah-Brown and Arun Jesudian; two grandsons-in-law, Dennis McLoughlin Jr. and Kenneth Brown; four brothers in India; and two sisters in India.
Mr. Gershom was born December 28, 1920 in the foothills of the Himalayas, the son of the late Rev. Edwin Gershom and Bharanamma Gershom. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Saraja Gershom; and a son-in-law, Dr. M. C. S. Jesudian.
He was the son and grandson of Methodist ministers and was a member of Gordonsville United Methodist Church.
He served in the British Royal Air Force in India and received his bachelor degree from Lucknow Christian College in India. He attended the University of Southern California as a Crusade Scholar in the early 1950’s, earning a master of education degree.
Upon returning to India, Mr. Gershom served as the principal of several Methodist schools, most notably Baldwin Boys’ High School in Bangalore.
He then immigrated to the United States in 1967. He taught at the Westtown School in Pennsylvania and later in Louisa County Public Schools until his retirement in 1986.

Gary D. Miller
Gary D. Miller, 59, of Louisa, formerly of Montclair, died Friday, January 23, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 30 at Mountcastle Funeral Home, Dale City. Interment with full military honors will be at Quantico National cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 29 at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandra; two daughters, Stephanie Fluke and Laura Miller; a granddaughter, Julia Fluke; a sister, Rosemary Browning; and two brothers, Herbert Jr. and Rodney Miller.
Born in Odessa, he graduated from high school in Big Lake. Mr. Miller graduated from the University of Texas, El Paso with a degree in political science. He served in the United States Marine Corp and worked for 26 years before retiring from the C.I.A.
He resided in Montclair for 27 years until moving to Louisa in the summer of 2003.
He was a member of Dumfries United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge in Centreville.

Art Morgenstern
Art Morgenstern, 64, of Lake Monticello, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at his residence.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cynthia; and his sister-in-law, Carol, and her husband, Cameron and son, Thomas, and had just returned from a trip to Florida to visit them.
He grew up in New York City, where he was active in the Civil Air Patrol and high school football.
After leaving his dad’s furniture business, he worked as a disc jockey in Pennyslvania and New York.
In 1972, Mr. Morgenstern joined ABC-TV in Hollywood as an audio engineer and worked for 25 years doing news, quiz shows and soap operas.
During the late 70s and early 80s, he covered all the Olympic games, the Academy Awards, and major PGA Golf tournaments. He worked for Good Morning America for five years setting up audio for live interviews on the show and met and put microphones on such people as Jamie Lee Curtis, Frank Sinatra and former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev. He did extensive traveling throughout the country for various location shoots.
Although Mr. Morgenstern lived in Lake Monticello for nearly a year, he had joined the Charlottesville Astronomical Society and the Fluvanna County Remote Control Flying Club.

Jacquelin H. Patterson
Jacquelin Herndon Patterson, 75, of Orange, died Saturday, January 23, 2004 at the Louisa Healthcare Center.
Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, is handling the arrangements.

Eugene B. Pendleton Jr.
Eugene “Bob” Barbour Pendleton Jr., 90, of Richmond, a native of Louisa County, died Friday, January 23, 2004 at his residence in Richmond.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 27 at Gilboa Christian Church.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the chapel of Westminster-Canterbury.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mildred McLean Pendleton; five daughters, Dr. Jane and her husband, Dr. Percy Wootton, Susan P. Hayden, Christina Perry and her husband, Joseph M. Perry, all of Richmond, Sally Campbell and her husband, Hugh Campbell, and Nancy Wheeler and her husband, Charles H. Wheeler IV, all of Hanover County; a sister, Betty P. Welday of Midlothian; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pendleton attended Virginia Military Institute and Hampden-Sydney College. In 1937, he formed a general insurance agency, was married in 1938 and also made his first step in politics by being elected Louisa County’s youngest member of the board of supervisors.
In September 1942, he sold his insurance agency and was commissioned ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. For the next four years he served in the Atlantic Theater during the height of the German submarine menace. He participated in the Invasion of Sicily and in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He was awarded two Battle Stars, several citations and the Bronze Medal. As lieutenant senior grade, he received his honorable discharge in 1946.
Following Naval duty, he was elected treasurer of Louisa County, in which capacity he served for ten years.
Active in many civic organizations, he was president of the Treasurers Association of Virginia, Rotary, Ruritan, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, VFW and Easter Seals.
Mr. Pendleton and his family were members of Gilboa Christian Church where he was an elder, Sunday School teacher and choir director.
Later in Richmond at Seventh Street Christian Church, he was an elder and chairman of the board.
In 1957, he was appointed Treasurer of Virginia, where he served four years; he then became vice-president of finances and treasurer of Southern States Cooperative.
He retired in 1978, but continued in those same capacities for Truxmore Industries until 1988.
In 1966, he was elected to the House of Delegates representing the City of Richmond and Henrico County and was reelected in 1968. He served ten years on the State Welfare Board, two years as chairman.
He was active in many organizations and boards: Atlantic Rural Exposition, Richmond Home for Boys, West Richmond Business Men’s Association, Richmond Symphony, Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Southern Bank, Shriners, Masons, Sigma Chi, Virginia Thanksgiving Festival, Sons of the Revolution, Virginia Creepers, Sons of the Confederacy, First Families of Virginia, Farmington Country Club, Country Club of Virginia, Commonwealth Club and the Society of the Cincinnati.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gilboa Church cemetery Fund, 6780 Jefferson Highway, Mineral, VA 23117.

Debra A. Walker
Debra Ann Walker, 51, of Louisa, died Friday, January 16, 2004 at a local hospital.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Michael Durham, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 21 at Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa.
She is survived by her husband, Roger “Domino” Allen Walker.

Nathaniel L. Whalen
Nathaniel Lee Whalen, 42, of Louisa, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Frank Lewis, were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 28 at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange. Interment was private.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Michelle Bowler Whalen; a daughter, Tameka Patrice Whalen, 19; two sons, Michael Tyrone Whalen, 21, and Maurice Nathaniel Whalen, 20, all of Gordonsville; his mother, Viola Harris Whalen; four brothers, James Whalen of College Park, Maryland, John Whalen and his wife, Gail, of Lynchburg, Joseph Whalen of Louisa and Gregory Whalen and his wife, Rosetta, of Fredericksburg; four sisters, Vanessa Robinson, Janice Wells, Caroline Harris and her husband, Wilbert, and Doris Henson and her husband, Gerald, all of Louisa; and a number of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, mother-in-law and friends.
Mr. Whalen was born July 16, 1961 in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, James Hubert Whalen.
He was a member of Zion Traveler’s Baptist Church, Louisa, and was affiliated with Wake Forest Baptist Church.

Mildred C. Carter
Mildred Clough Carter, 60, of Mineral, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Steve McClary, were held at 11 a.m. April 1 at South Anna Baptist Church. Interment was in the Christian-Ramkey family cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Todd and Neil Craig Carter; and a brother, J. V. Clough.
Mrs. Carter was born June 8, 1943, the daughter of the late John Vivian and Grace Parrish Clough.
