O.S. Kuhn Jr. dies at 82, taught PE
Oct 29, 2001
Former George Wythe High School physical education teacher Oscar Shannon Kuhn Jr. loved making people laugh.
"He was a practical joker," said his daughter, Sharon Robertson of Richmond. "He'd send students and teachers around school looking for 'sky hooks' or for the 'key to the pitcher's mound.' He played 'guerrilla water guns' with squirt guns. He had a very terrific sense of humor."
Mr. Kuhn, who retired in 1984 as George Wythe's physical education teacher, driver education teacher and tennis coach, died of complications from heart problems Saturday at his home in Holden Beach, N.C., where he had been the "town character" since 1992. He was 82.
He began 36 years of teaching in 1948 at East End Junior High School in Richmond. He later taught at Chandler Junior High School and then went to George Wythe.
Besides teaching, he was a full-time basketball and football referee and baseball umpire. "I remember being escorted from some high school games by the police when fans didn't like the referee's call," his daughter said.
Mr. Kuhn also had been a substitute umpire at games played by the Richmond Virginians, forerunners of the Richmond Braves, and a referee for wheelchair basketball in Richmond.
A Radford native, he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Emory & Henry College, where he lettered in tennis and basketball.
He volunteered with the Army during World War II. He served in Europe and earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his role in taking out an enemy machine-gun position in Germany.
After the war, he served with the Army Reserve, retiring as a captain, and earned a master's degree in education from Peabody College for Teachers.
Mr. Kuhn had been a longtime Sunday school teacher for junior high students at Boulevard United Methodist Church.
His wife of 48 years, Ada Nichols Kuhn, died in 1990. In 1992, he married his college sweetheart, Billie Bell.
Besides his wife and daughter, survivors include two sons, W. Kirk Kuhn of Smithfield and O. Kevin Kuhn; and a sister, Frances Turner of Salisbury, Md.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave., Goochland County.
