Elaine C. Burns
Elaine Catherine Burns, 87, of Apple Grove, Mineral, died Monday, April 24, 2006.
Funeral services, conducted by Father Rodney Rodis, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28 at St. Jude Catholic Church. Interment was in Spring Grove cemetery, Mineral.
She is survived by her sons, Michael F. Burns and Matthew Burns; her daughter, Ellen Caruso; her grandchildren, Anna Meier, John Caruso, Michael T. Burns, Laura C. Burns and Ariena Burns; and her great-grandchildren, Sean and Caitlin Meier.
Mrs. Burns was born April 8, 1919 in New York, the daughter of the late Francis X. and Emma Bachmann Knowles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Michael T. Burns.
Lacy Funeral Home, Mineral, handled the arrangements.

Willie E. Dowell
Willie Edward Dowell, 93, of Gordonsville, died Friday, April 28, 2006 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Charlottesville.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. David Collyer, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Gordonsville. Interment was at Maplewood cemetery, Gordonsville.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Dowell of Charlottesville; a daughter, Lois Jean Labier and her husband, Don, of Charlottesville; three sons, William E. Dowell Jr. and his wife, Valerie, of Columbus, Ohio, Daniel W. Dowell and his fianceé, Nancy K. Floyd, of Louisa, and Michael A. Dowell and his wife, Silvia, of Gordonsville; and five grandchildren, Bryan Dowell, Kristin Dowell, Paul Dowell, Jason Dowell, Alexander Dowell, Matthew Floyd and Sarah Floyd.
Mr. Dowell was born February 4, 1913 in Albemarle County, the son of the late Cyrus B. Dowell and Mary Bernice Beck Dowell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice Dowell; two sons, Shannon Dowell and Kevin Dowell; six brothers, Bennie Dowell, Lewis Dowell, Tom Dowell, Lee Dowell, Cye Dowell and Clarence Dowell; three sisters, Mary D. Askey, Lois D. Coleman and Ethel Dowell.
He worked for Otis Elevator for over 40 years and was the electrical lift systems supervisor on the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. United States in 1952.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Charlottesville.

Mathew T. Herring
Mathew Thomas Herring, 18, of Ashland, formerly of Mineral, died Friday, April 28, 2006 in Ashland.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5 at Spring Grove Memorial cemetery, Mineral.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at Reid’s Funeral Home, Ashland.
He is survived by his mother, Michelle Herring; his father, Thomas Hamm; his stepfather, Dwight Black; a brother, Correy Herring; a sister, Samantha Herring; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Herring was born July 14, 1987.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Herring Family, c/o Reid’s Funeral Home, Ashland.

Edward Johnson
Edward Johnson, 78, died Friday, April 28, 2006 at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, Richmond.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Geraldine Shelton, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Thomasson Watson Chapel in Louisa. Interment was in Spring Grove Memorial Park cemetery.
He is survived by a sister, Louise Gillus; a brother-in-law, William Anderson; a number of nieces, nephews and friends; a devoted friend, Emma Shelton and her children; and his caregiver, Louise Langhorne.
Mr. Johnson was born Monday, November 7, 1927 in Washington D.C., the son of the late Mo-tee and Lucy Winn Johnson. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Alice Lee, Frances Anderson, Elizabeth Johnson and Ida Johnson; and two brothers, Preston and Patrick Johnson.
He moved to Louisa County at a young age and attended Louisa County Public Schools. He was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.
He was employed by Intercounty Construction Company for a number of years in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Mayland.
Upon returning to Virginia, he worked for and retired from Tyson Industries.

Brandon R. Lam
Brandon Ray Lam, 16, of Gordonsville, died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesvsille.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Roy Giles and the Rev. Omie Shifflett, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Gordonsville. Interment will be in the Eheart Pentecostal Church cemetery.
He is survived by his mother, Lora D. Hawley and her husband, Thomas, of Louisa; his father, Cecil Ray Lam and his wife, Misty, of Gordonsville; his maternal grandmother, Gladys Smallwood of Louisa; his paternal grandmother, Clara Lam of Ruckersville; three brothers, Joshua Wayne Lam, Daniel Earl “Bubba” Lam and Cecil Floyd “CJ” Lam; three sisters, Kayla Rene Lam, Brandi May Lam and Melinda Taylor; a special aunt, Audrey Lettner; a special cousin, Travis Lee Lam; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Lam was born February 10, 1990 in Charlottesville. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William Floyd Lam Sr.; four uncles, Roger Lee Lam, Robbie Smallwood, William F. Lam Jr. and Eric Riner.

Roy J. Mehlhaff
Roy John Mehlhaff, 81, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Graveside services, conducted by the Rev. David Thurman, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at Monticello Memory Gardens, Charlottesville.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy P. Mehlhaff; a daughter, Paige M. DeCarlo of Amherst; a son, Byron Mehlhaff and his wife, Karen, of Louisa; five grandchildren, Kristin DeCarlo, Blake Mehlhaff, Ryan DeCarlo, Jeff Mehlhaff and Ashley Stephenson; a brother, Kenny Mehlhaff of Minnesota; a sister, Mildred Black of Oregon; three brothers-in-law, Chubby Proffitt, Ralph Proffitt and Hollis Proffitt; and four sisters-in-law, Ollie Proffitt and Arlene Proffitt, all of Charlottesville, Janet and Joy Mehlhaff, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Mr. Mehlhaff was born in Underwood, North Dakota, the son of the late John D. Mehlhaff and Paulline Sayler Mehlhaff. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Stephenson; and five brothers and sisters.
He was a career administrator having retired after 20 years from the Lynchburg city school system. Prior to that he was with the Miller School in Albemarle County for 12 years.
He was an active member of Inglewood Baptist Church where he served as deacon, a trustee and also sang in the choir.
During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army.

Warren A. Payne
Warren A. Payne, 64, of Spotsylvania, died Monday, May 1, 2006.
Graveside services, conducted by the Rev. Mike Nickle, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5 at Good Hope Baptist Church cemetery, Spotsylvania.
He is survived by his brother, Lawrence M. Payne and his wife, Patsy, of Louisa; a niece, Angela Spears of Fredericksburg; and his nephew, Jacob Payne Louisa.
Mr. Payne was born October 1, 1941, the son of the late Russell and Thelma Seay Payne.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department.

Shirley W. Walters
Shirley Webb Walters, 74, of Gordonsville, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville.
Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Ed Rigg, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28 at Preddy Funeral Home, Orange. Interment was in Graham cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Ann Wine of Culpeper, Janet Sue Jones of Unionville, and Janice Marie Walters of Elkton; two sons, Terry L. Walters of Orange and William Bruce Walters of Glen Allen; a brother, Robert J. Webb and his wife, Ann, of Tallahassee, Florida; three sisters, Mary W. Lloyd of Somerset, Alice W. Colvin and her husband, Dixie, of Gordonsville, and Ruth W. Layman and her husband, Charles, of Troy; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Walters was born August 31, 1931 in Louisa County, the daughter of the late William F. and Annie Marks Webb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William F. Webb Jr.; and two sisters, Frances “Sis” Webb and Remona Webb Piercy.

Mary A. Askew
Mary Ann Askew, 56, of Bumpass, died Thursday, June 1, 2006.
Graveside services, conducted by Pastor Terry Gilbert, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 4 at Hillcrest cemetery, Louisa.
She is survived by her daughter, Alice Ford of Ashland; her stepchildren, Ella V. Askew of Louisiana, L. Raymond Askew of Bumpass, and Richard Bane Askew of California; a special friend, Jerrell Seay; her brother, Charles L. Brooks Jr. of Gloucester; her sister, Alice Brooks of Charlottesville; two grandchildren, Amber and Derrick Ford; and six stepgrand-children.
Mrs. Askew was born September 9, 1949, the daughter of the late Charles L. Brooks Sr. and Edith Perry Brooks.
She was a homemaker.
