Fred Anthony Ashley, 70, of 6813 Carnation Street, departed this life September 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Clara Lee Ashley; children, Terry Stinson (Lonnie), Frederick Ashley (Gloria), Vincent Ashley (Cheryl), Arnette Harrell (William), Freda Ashley, Charles Ashley, Anita Tibbs (Sherrod), Elaina Cumbo (William) and Martin Ashley (Natasha); 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one aunt, one brother-in-law, three nieces, four great-nieces, cousins, church family and friends. His remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave., where his family will receive friends Thursday, 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Southside Baptist Ministries, 5515 Bryce Lane, Rev. Dr. Lonnie Stinson officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery.

BEY
Maria Bey, age 83, of Richmond, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 31, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Bey; her parents, Jerman and Josephine Drake; her sister, Alphine Jones; and her son-in-law, John B. Gordon Jr. She was the loving mother of three children, Charles Bey (Alice), Marian Gordon and William Bey (Shirley). She is survived by one sister, Mozelle Robinson; six granddaughters, four grandsons, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; one aunt, Patty Ragland; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services will be conducted Thursday, September 5, 2002, 12 noon from Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Thursday at the funeral home. BLILEY
James Christopher Bliley, 51, of Louisa, died Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at his residence. He was born October 2, 1950 in Richmond, a son of the late Edward I. Bliley Jr., and is survived by his mother, Mary E. Wampler Bliley, who lives in Richmond. He was a member of Goldmine Baptist Church in Louisa County. Mr. Bliley is also survived by his wife, Patricia Rae Bliley of Louisa; four daughters, Tracy Logan and husband, Gill, Lindsay Ribakov and Abigail Ribakov, all of Richmond and Denise Bethke and husband, Tim of Edmond, Oklahoma; three sons, Stephen Bliley and wife, Sara, Tim Dich and wife, Kim and Ken Dich, all of Richmond; one brother, Robert Wayne Bliley and wife, Jan of Richmond; one sister, Linda Hall and husband, Warren of California; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2002 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment in Spring Grove Cemetery in Mineral. The Rev. Perry Clore will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

BOWEN
Chloe Elizabeth Bowen, 16, of Ashland, born July 9, 1986, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 3, 2002 en route to Patrick Henry High School, where she would have started her junior year. An automobile accident claimed the life of this vivacious young student, who was looking forward to a new year at Patrick Henry with boundless enthusiasm. She was an honor student, a cheerleader, and a member of the gymnastics team. She was active in Ginter Park Baptist Church in Richmond, singing in the choir from the age of four and playing in the youth bell choir. Chloe was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, H.B. and Helen Parrott; and is survived by her parents, Steven and Theresa Bowen; her brother, Steven Kyle; paternal grandparents, Al (Stan) and Bettie Bowen; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, Marcia W. Parrott and her friend, Mark M. Petty, Rose, Dennis and Candace Domayer, Alvin, Nancy, Allie and Brett Bowen, Cindy, George and Garth Treadway, Robbie, Derek and Meagan Spencer, Diana, Greg, Dalton and Molly Williford; as well as many loving friends. Friends may call at the Reid Funeral Home, 412 South Washington Hwy., Ashland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ginter Park Baptist Church, 1600 Wilmington Avenue in Richmond. BOWIE
Kyle Watson Bowie was born November 1, 1924 in Roanoke, Va. to Kyle W. Bowie Sr. and wife, Catherine Cheatham. He graduated from West Point. Kyle was assigned to Japan where he married Katharine Elizabeth Niblo. While there, he was awarded the CIB and Purple Heart. In 1965 as Battalion Commander, he was assigned to Vietnam. In the first six months he was engaged in a number of heavy battles and was awarded two Silver Stars plus a number of other decorations and the Battalion received a Distinguished Unit Citation. After returning to the States, he was promoted to Colonel before returning to Vietnam. He retired in 1975 with his wife to Halifax County, Va. Following his wife's passing, Kyle married Marie Foster with whom he spent his remaining years in happiness. He was on the Board of Trustees for the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation. He passed away on September 3, 2002 and is survived by his wife, Marie; his daughter, Kay and husband, Tom Scovill; grandson, Daniel and wife, Isavane; granddaughter, Hope Scovill; stepson, Lou and wife, Laurie Foster; stepdaughter, Amy and husband, Ted Humphrey; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Walter Watson Bowie. In lieu of flowers, please consider the Brookneal Volunteer Rescue Squad or the St. John's Episcopal Church. There will be a graveside service Friday, 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery with military Rites. He was an officer and gentleman in a quiet way, an inspiration to us, and most of all, a soldier's soldier.

BROOKE
M. Elizabeth Brooke, 85, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 3, 2002. She was a daughter of the late Richard T. and Cecil B. Brooke of Stormont, Va. She is survived by her niece, Jane Brooke; and her nephew, Thomas Winstead Brooke. Miss Brooke was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was retired from Southern States. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 5 in Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1925 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23220.

BURCHAM
Dr. Carnie Roy Burcham Sr., age 82, of Williamsburg, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2002. Dr. Burcham was the son of the late Wesley R. and Maude Edwards Burcham of Woodlawn, Carroll County, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret McCluney Burcham. After graduating from the Woodlawn High School, he attended and graduated from Lynchburg College and Vanderbilt University, pursuing further education at MacMasters University and the University of Virginia. At Lynchburg College he was the tenor soloist for the A Cappella Choir; he participated in the Literary Society, the Lynchburg College Players, Intramural Sports, the Ministerial Association, the Social Relations Committee, the yearbook staff, the Folk Dance Club, the Religious Activities Committee and the Student Christian Association. While at Vanderbilt he served student pastorates in Kentucky and was director of the East Nashville Branch YMCA. Reared in Forest Oak Christian Church (Carroll County), he was ordained to the Christian Ministry (Disciples of Christ) on Sunday, October 27, 1946, in the Galax Christian Church. Dr. Burcham served the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in Louisiana for 15 years. He was Minister of Christian Education at King's Highway in Shreveport. In New Orleans he was pastor of St. Charles Avenue Christian Church and served as Director of Student Work at Tulane University and helped organize the Gentilly and Lafayette Christian Churches. As pastor of the First Christian Church in Baton Rouge, he also served as Director of Disciple Student Work at Louisiana State University. He established the churches in Cromley and Monroe, Louisiana. For eight years, he was a member of the Governor's Committee for Institutional Chaplains in Louisiana; president of the 1953 Louisiana Convention of Christian Churches; chairman of the board of the Louisiana Christian Missionary Society. Both in Louisiana and Virginia, Dr. Burcham directed and organized youth camps and conferences as well as adult and family conferences. In Virginia, he served as Associate Secretary of the Virginia Convention of Christian Churches, carrying out the responsibilities of Stewardship, Outreach and Financial Promotion. His pastoral work was influential in moving the 200 congregations forward in Virginia. When he was pastor of Lakeside Christian Church in Richmond, Virginia from 1961 to 1968, the church doubled in membership; and he led the congregation to two successful Building Debt Retirement Campaigns and saw the building of the second unit of the church. Dr. Burcham served on the Executive Committee of the Virginia Council of Churches, was a member of the Richmond Area Ecumenical Committee for Research and Church Planning, the Recommendations Committee of the International Convention of Christian Churches, two terms on the Home and State Planning Committee for the United States and Canada, the International Council for Religious Education, on the Governor's Committee for plans for Virginia's role in the 1976 Bi-Centennial Celebration. Dr. Burcham's involvement and service to the community included service as president of the Brookland Middle School PTA, president of the Hermitage Sertoma Club, treasurer of Buford Academy, president of the Sandston Rotary Club, being a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship. He was a member of Virginia Museum Theatre, the Richmond Symphony and the Virginia Opera Company and the Richmond Public Forum. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Carnie Roy Burcham Jr., of Shreveport, Louisiana, John Mark Burcham and Sara Jane Burcham of New Orleans and Richard Lesher McCluney Jr. of Williamsburg, Virginia; and two granddaughters and one great-grandson. Two brothers, Mack J. Burcham of Charlotte, N.C. and Friel Burcham of Galax preceded Dr. Burcham in death. Surviving siblings are Kathleen B. Riddle of Greensboro, N.C., Florence B. Lawson, Pearl B. Bartlett and Bobbie B. Burcham, all of Galax; also 18 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 10 a.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home on Laburnum Avenue in Richmond, with burial to follow at Fort Hill Burial Park in Lynchburg at 3 p.m. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 5 at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg and on Friday, September 6 at Nelsen Funeral Home in Richmond from 4 to 7 p.m.

BURDITT
Gary Eugene Burditt, 43, of Spotsylvania, Va., died Sunday, September 1, 2002 at his home. Mr. Burditt was employed by General Products for 26 years. He was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, Harley rider and member of Ridge Road Hunt Club. Surviving are his loving wife, Beverly J. Burditt, whom he married February 14, 2002; three stepchildren, Stephanie Rodgers, Sarah Samulevich and Jeremy Rodgers, all of Spotsylvania, Va.; mother and stepfather, Shirley A. and Jim Keiser of Hopewell, Va.; father and stepmother, M. Eugene and Joan Burditt of Farmington, Del.; stepsister, Brenda Burditt of San Diego, Calif.; two stepbrothers, Barry Carter of Herndon, Va. and Brian Carter of Farmington, Del.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Spotsylvania Chapel, followed by burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Brooks, Ricky Spitzer, Donnie Payne, Vincent Washington, Billy Langridge, Bennie Lipscomb, Pete Gavis and Terry King. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Miracle Network, 4525 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117.

BUTLER
Doris Newton Butler of Richmond died Wednesday, September 4, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Carlisle C. Butler. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter L. and Annie Wheeler Newton; and a sister, Alice Newton Hawkes. Mrs. Butler retired in 1993 as Secretary/Treasurer of Westhampton Memorial Park, which was founded by her husband, and Sunset Memorial Park. She studied at the Peabody Conservatory and the New England Conservatory, and was a graduate of The American Institute of Normal Methods in Boston. Mrs. Butler was a violinist and performed with her String Ensemble, having played one of the first broadcasts on WRVA radio. She served on the boards of The Richmond Symphony, Richmond Music Study Club, Council of Women's Organizations, Ferrum College, and Federated Arts Council, now the Arts Council of Richmond. As a member of the Richmond Council of Women's Organizations, she helped establish "Meals on Wheels." The family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 6 in Westhampton Memorial Park.

COINER
Josephine Pittman Coiner, 87, formerly of Farmville, Va., died Friday, August 30, 2002 in Dayton, Ohio. Born in Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Maude Wood Pittman. She was a retired secretary with the U.S. Government and an Episcopalian. Survivors include her son, Leonard Coiner and his wife, Marjorie of Bellbrook, Ohio; two grandsons, Benjamin and Jacob Coiner; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Terrell and Margaret Baker; and six brothers, Elmo, John, Walter, Harold, Hugh and Clarence Pittman. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002 in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, Va., with Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, has charge of arrangements.

COLEMAN
Gale Coleman, age 43, of Richmond, entered eternal rest August 31, 2002. Survivors are three children, Larone, Latrice and Johntae; four grandchildren; her father and mother, Lewis Jr. and Gabriel Coleman; one brother, Lewis III; one devoted sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Hugh Lewis; two nieces, one devoted, Katika Coleman; one nephew, one great-niece, two uncles, two aunts, a host of cousins and friends. COLEMAN
Mrs. Virginia Browder Coleman, age 90, of Alberta, Va., died September 4, 2002. She was the widow of Henry Hilton Coleman. She is survived by a daughter, Sarah C. Eastwood of Richmond; a son, Marvin E. Coleman of Jackson, N.C.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ella Gibbs of Warfield, Daisy Gee of Kenbridge and Mamie Ammons of Colonial Heights. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home with interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Va. The family will be receiving friends Thursday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Memorials may be made to Antioch United Methodist Church or Alberta Vol. Fire Dept.

DICKERSON
David Christopher "Chris" Dickerson, 31, died on September 2, 2002 in Richmond. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Richmond on September 6, 2002 at 7 p.m.

FORNWALD
Ruth Smithers Fornwald, 90, died September 2, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William S. Smithers Sr.; her daughter, Barbara Smithers O'Toole and her husband, William L. Fornwald. She is survived by her son, William S. Smithers Jr. and his wife, Yvonne; her sister, Lillian C. Raymaker; eight grandchildren, Kimberly S. Wright, William S. Smithers III, Mary S. Kastelberg, Anne S. Wiley, William A. O'Toole, RuthAnn O'Toole, Robin S. O'Toole and R. Geri Blasko; 16 great-grandchildren and one nephew. Ruth and her sister, Lillian, who are members of the Yonkers, New York Sports Hall of Fame, were accomplished speed skating champions, winning numerous medals in competition along the East Coast including silver skates awards for their performance in Madison Square Garden. Memorial services will be held September 6, 2002, 10 a.m., at Gayton Road Christian Church, 12050 Ridgefield Parkway, Richmond, Virginia, the Reverend Deborah Vaughan presiding.

GAVENTA
William Carter Gaventa, MD, 81, of Midlothian, Va., died September 2, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice; two sons and their families, William C. Jr. and his wife, Beverly and their son, Matthew of Princeton, N.J.; John and his wife, Juliet and their sons, Jacob and Jonathan and daughter, Megan of Brighton, England; two brothers, Lawrence and his wife, Sylvia of Houston, Texas and Harry Reymer and his wife, Betty Ann of Lake Charles, La.; along with five nieces. Dr. Gaventa grew up in Florida, graduated from the University of Tampa, was first in his graduating class at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, later earned a Master's Degree in Public Health at Tulane University in New Orleans and was a Fellow in the American College of Internal Medicine. For 27 years, he and his wife were medical missionaries in Nigeria, West Africa under the Baptist Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) in Richmond. He led in founding the Baptist Hospital at Eku. Later, he was Chief of Medical Staff and coordinator of training at the Baptist Medical Center at Ogbomosho. During an extended leave in the United States he served as assistant medical director of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, Ky. Returning to the U.S. in 1984, he was director of the Mission Board's Medical Services Department until retirement in 1989. Following retirement he was a volunteer physician at Cross-Over Clinic in Richmond. He was an active member of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship from its beginning in 1991. He will be remembered as a man of dignity, humor, intelligence and commitment to his Christian faith. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian, where he was a dedicated member, holding a number of leadership positions. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to contribute to a William C. Gaventa Scholarship Fund established by the two Gaventa sons to be awarded annually to a worthy student at the Baptist Seminary, Ogbomosho, Nigeria, are invited to send such contributions to Winfree Baptist Church, 13617 Midlothian Turnpike, Midlothian, Va. 23113 and designate such gift. Other contributions may be made to the Missions Committee of the same church or to the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, 3400 Brook Road, Richmond, Va. 23227.
