Sarah Hill Cooke, nurse, dies at 86
Nov 13, 2002
As a girl of 4, Sarah Hill Cooke loved to bandage her dolls' heads.
When she grew up, she became the only black nurse to serve as interim director of nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.
She was the first black woman to receive a St. Philip Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Star Award, which recognizes outstanding alumni in nursing.
In May 2000, she received a Virginia Nurses Association Pioneer Award, honoring her as a nursing trailblazer.
Mrs. Cooke, a mother figure for many and known for her considerable nurturing talents, died Friday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 86.
The Richmond resident was born in Norfolk, the youngest of seven children of a Baptist minister and his wife.
"Little Sis," as she was called by her family, came in 1937 to Richmond, where a brother was teaching high school, and graduated from the former St. Philip School of Nursing in 1939.
Her nursing career began on the staff of St. Philip Hospital in Richmond, a former hospital for blacks during the segregation era, where she rose to assistant director of nursing services.
St. Philip's closed with the end of segregation, and Mrs. Cooke went to Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.
During the 1960s, she took academic leave to attend New York City University, where she earned her master's degree in nursing education while living with a sister on Long Island. She returned to MCV, where she retired in 1979 as associate director of nursing.
Mrs. Cooke served as chairman of the steering committee for the St. Philip School of Nursing Endowment Fund. For 13 years, she served as president of the St. Philip Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
Mrs. Cooke "advised young people on their careers, how to act and mannerisms," said her sister, Elsie Hewitt, of Norfolk. "A lot of them have said that they owe their success to her."
Mrs. Cooke, who had no children, became especially fond of Michael Dixon, Yvonne Moon and Yvonne's husband, Michael, whom she considered honorary children. They looked after her as she got older.
"Sarah didn't drive, and Michael Dixon drove her around until his multiple sclerosis got worse and he couldn't. Then Yvonne drove her around to the veterans hospital nursing home where her husband has been since 1999, and her husband, Michael, helped, too," Hewitt said.
Survivors, besides her sister, include her husband, James D. Cooke Jr.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1501 Decatur St. Burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery.
