ELLIS
William Mitchell Ellis, age 79, of Short Pump, Va., got his wings and went to be with the Lord on August 26, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lena Mills Ellis; and a daughter, Valerie Gail Ellis. Surviving are a son, Leroy Ellis and his wife, Terry of Mechanicsville; two daughters, Anne E. Nuckols and her husband, Lawrence B. of Manakin and Margie E. Dawson and her husband, Kevin of Hurt. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Penny Minor, Sandi Nuckols, Sydney Ellis and Gavin Dawson; two great-grandchildren, Larry and Ellis Dunn; two sisters, Katherine Ellis and Charlotte Osborne and her husband, Billy; a brother-in-law, John Liesfeld; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Dolan; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., Glen Allen. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2001 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church. Burial to follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church or contributions of money or blood to the Virginia Blood Services.

FEMIANI
Nila E. Femiani of Richmond departed this life to be with her sweet Jesus August 26, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph P. Femiani and her sons, Henry and Bob Femiani. She is survived by her children, Carol Hansen, Paul and John Femiani, Marty Gordon, Pat Femiani, Rose Riley and Clara Wendorf; her sister, Clara Grazer; her brother, Louis Suffredini; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Femiani was a lay member of the Order of Carmelites and the Giuseppe Verdi Lodge. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

FORTNER
Benny G. Fortner Sr., 69, of Roanoke, Va, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Iris Bozarth Fortner; three sons, Glenn Weeks Fortner and wife, Julie, Ben George Fortner Jr. and wife, Denise, Kenneth Bozarth Fortner and wife, Debbie; five grandchildren, Taylor, Haley, Bryce, Ryan and Gavin Fortner; two sisters, Rachael F. Bradshaw and Marcella F. Whitson of Virginia Beach. He was a native of Southwest Virginia, born in Big Stone Gap and grew up in St. Paul. In 1950, at the onset of the Korean Conflict he joined the U.S. Air Force, trained in electronics and electronic countermeasures, and served in the Strategic Air Command's 98th Bomb Wing (H) as an airborne radar specialist on B29's, stationed at Yakota AFB, Japan. After the Korean Conflict he served with the U.S. Marine Corps VMF 233, an anti-submarine patrol squadron at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1960, he was employed by Virginia Electric and Power Company in Richmond. He then received his professional registration and entered the consulting engineering field where for the next 40 years he practiced as a Consulting Engineer. He was a registered professional engineer and licensed to practice in 12 states and the District of Columbia. In the early 1980's he started performing engineering services in conjunction with projects for the U.S. State Department's Office of Foreign Buildings Operations, including task assignments in the Middle East, Far East, Central Asia, Europe, Central and South America, as well as the NIS. One of his latest assignments with Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, Inc. was supervising the design of a new U.S. Embassy Compound in Tajikistan. His engineering designs and assignments include complex electrical facilities for a wide variety of projects, ranging from healthcare facilities and airports to classified communications and diplomatic installations. He traveled to over 40 countries in the performance of his assigned duties. Since 1951, he continued his learning experience as a pilot and was an instrument rated pilot and aircraft owner who enjoyed flying for pleasure and occasional business. As a member of Angel Flight of Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic, he provided charitable air transportation for people-in-need of medical attention, medical supplies, organs, organ donors, blood and medical personnel when such transport was important for timely delivery. Over the past 40 years, he served on a number of professional and social organizations, including past member of City of Richmond Electrical Examining Board and Board of Appeals, senior member, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, served as secretary, treasurer, regional vice president and president elect of the Consulting Engineers Council of Virginia, member of the Virginia and National Society of Professional Engineers, member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, member of Ye Ancient and Loyal Order of Quiet Birdmen, member of Angel Flight of Virginia and Mid-Atlantic, Member of Virginia Aviation Historical Society and past member of the Board of Trustees for Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 12 p.m. at Second Baptist Church in Richmond. Burial to follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society.

HARRIS
Departed this life August 26, 2001, Richard Harris Sr., of 1616 Mechanicsville Turnpike. Notice of funeral later. Arrangements by the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Avenue.

HORTON
Donnie Horton, 51, died August 27, 2001. Survivors include his daughter, Crystle; and his mother, Ruth. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Interment 10 a.m. Wednesday at Va. Veterans Cemetery.

HOWELL
Donnie Hugh Howell, age 56, aka Pop, Grandad, PaPa, and Detroit Wheeler, slipped away on Sunday, August 26, 2001 at Chippenham Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Howell; daughter, Julia Flowers; inherited daughter, Jackie Winston; grandchildren, Makeda McEachern, Larry, Gary, Joy and John Siegler; and great-grandson, Kemon McEachern; parents, Bessie and William Howell; five brothers, Willie, Milton, Charles, Leon and Calvin; devoted friend, Joe Wilson, along with many others. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at All Saints Apostolic Church, 2001 Royal Ave., 12 p.m. Bishop R.L. Tapper officiating.

JOHNSON
Michael William Johnson, 37, of Columbus, Ohio and formerly of Richmond, died Sunday, August 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Fisher Johnson; daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Johnson; son, Camm William Johnson, all of Columbus; parents, Carl W. and Douglas G. Johnson; sister, Melissa Ann Johnson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, C. Douglas Jr. and Nancy Spencer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arun K. and Fran Fisher Bose; nieces, Claire Ling Johnson and Lily Malina Bose, all of Richmond. He was a graduate of The College of William and Mary and The Tuck School at Dartmouth College, where he earned an M.B.A. and was a Tuck Scholar. He had been employed at Signet Bank in Richmond in strategic planning, was a principal at Booz Allen in New York City, and served in several senior management positions with Bank One in Columbus, the last being senior vice president at Bankone.com. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Monument Avenue and The Boulevard. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Interment private at Hollywood Cemetery.

KAMBOURIAN
On the morning of August 25, 2001, Haig Kambourian Sr. passed away in his sleep at his Brandermill residence. Kambourian is survived by Roxie, his wife of 61 years; a sister, Virginia K. Wildermuth; a son, Haig B. Kambourian Jr.; a daughter, Jean Linda Kambourian; three grandchildren, Daphne Kambourian Dandridge, Melissa Kambourian-Kidd, Haig B. Kambourian III; and five great-grandsons. Kambourian was born in Richmond on November 16, 1911, and graduated from John Marshall High School where he was a member of the cadet corps. During World War II Kambourian worked for Western Electric at Bell Labs, taking part in designing the radar systems that were put into use in Spitfire airplanes in the air war over England. During the 1960's Kambourian returned to jewelry work for which he had apprenticed during the 1930's. He is the founder of Kambourian Jewelers that presently operates a store in Midlothian. The styles of jewelry and metal working techniques he taught are in use by many craftspeople throughout the country as well as members of his immediate family, who carry on the family business today. Kambourian was a patient teacher, loving husband and father. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 30 at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, 520 North Boulevard, Richmond, Va.

KELLY
Paul Edward Kelly, 63, of Colonial Heights, died Monday, August 27, 2001 at Johnston-Willis Hospital, Chesterfield. A native of Bellows Falls, Vermont, he was the son of the late Michael Joseph and Catherine Julia Usher Kelly. Mr. Kelly served his country with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Petersburg, the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee for Colonial Heights and the American Legion Post #284. He is survived by his wife, Carol L. Kelly; son and daughter-in-law, Jay Christopher and Marcella A. Kelly of Colonial Heights; a daughter, Megan A. Kelly of Richmond; a son and daughter-in-law, Sean T. and Lisa B. Kelly of Chester; a daughter and son-in-law, Colleen M. and Christopher Riggs of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren, Paul M. Kelly, David C. Kelly, Nicole A. Kelly and Aidan J. Kelly; a sister, Anna M. Kelly of Colonial Heights; as well as several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be conducted Thursday, August 30, 2001 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Petersburg. Rev. Monsignor Michael Schmeid, Rev. Monsignor Michael McCarron, Rev. Michael Renninger and Rev. Thomas Ianucci will serve as celebrants. Committal services will be private and at a later date. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 until 7 p.m. prior to the Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Massey Cancer Center, c/o Development Officer, P.O. Box 980037, Richmond, Va. 23298-0037 or to the Colonial Heights Senior Center, 157 Roanoke Ave., Colonial Heights, Va. 23834 in memory of Paul Edward Kelly.

LAIRD
Mary Catherine "Kitty" Laird, 79, of Richmond, widow of Paul M. Laird Jr., died August 25, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Libby Laird Cundiff; six devoted grandchildren, Anthony Wayne Cundiff, Trina Cundiff Beasley, Mario Brett Cundiff, Donna Cundiff Mauldin, Deana Cundiff Matthews and Gina Cundiff Stoltzfus; 13 great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Leroy W. Vest. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), with funeral services to follow at 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday in the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lexington, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6359, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

LANG
Bertie Snead "Red" Lang, youngest son of Emma Haden and William Burton Lang, died Saturday, August 25, 2001 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ramona Garris Lang; three daughters, Vivian Hargrave, Linda Cox, and Lisa Flippen; two son-in-laws, Lloyd W. Hargrave and Robert A. Flippen Jr.; eight grandchildren, Amy H. Moore, Anna, Bryan and Rachel Hargrave, Carley Lovell, Luke Mallory, Mariah and Hannah Flippen; two great-grandchildren, Quillen Hargrave and Singrid Pullin; three sisters, Pearl Haden, Creola Urban and Nancy Kehoe; many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. Mr. Lang was an employee of Safeway Stores Inc. for 40 years, most of which he was a manager. From 1979 until he retired in 1991, he was the manager of the Laburnum Avenue/Williamsburg Rd. Safeway. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Corinth United Methodist Church, Williamsburg Rd., Sandston, where Mr. Lang was an active member for over 37 years. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Corinth United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Bon Secours Hospice.

LEE
Alice S. Lee, age 83, died August 18, 2001, at the Hospice of NOVA. Beloved wife of the late Robert E. Lee; sister of Corinne Semple Jeffrey of Richmond, Va., Marion Semple Durocher of Revere, Mass., and James Semple of Amsbury, Mass. She is survived by niece, Alice Jeffrey Tucker of Reston, Va.; nephews, Paul R. Jeffrey, Michael F. Jeffrey and Stephen D. Jeffrey, all of Richmond, Va.; great-nephew, Bob Tucker of Reston, Va.; great-nieces, Alison Jeffrey Scott and Jennifer Yellets, both of Richmond, Va., and Leslie Tucker of London, UK. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 11, at 10:45 a.m. at the Ft. Meyer Old Post Chapel in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements by Adams- Green Funeral Home.

LOVING
Alfred W. "Shorty" Loving, 82, of Ashland, husband of the late Evelyn M. Loving, died August 27, 2001. He is survived by his stepson, Michael G. Harman and his wife, Lauri; his stepdaughter, Gay Blankenship and her husband, Rick; grandchildren, Christy Tate, Michael Harman Jr., Mat and Chase Blankenship; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Landon Tate. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will recieve friends 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in Independence Christian Church, Ashland, where the family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bon Secours Hospice, 8580 Magellan Pkwy., Bldg. 4, Richmond, Va. 23227. Mr. Loving was a WWII Army veteran and worked as a carpenter for 32 years at A.P. Hill.

MASSEY
Cecile Y. Massey of Richmond died Monday, August 27, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, John R. Massey Jr.; two daughters, Carolyn Hudson and Elaine Sprouse; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. Mrs. Massey was retired from the Department of Corrections. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Washington Memorial Park.

MICKENS
James R. Mickens of Jamaica, Long Island, N.Y., formerly of Richmond, Va., went home to his Lord August 26, 2001. He leaves a devoted son, Gregory (LaVerne); nephew, W.H. Mickens Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; a devoted niece, Carolyn Mickens Cephas of Richmond; and many great-great-great-nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Richmond area. Contact Carolyn M. OSBORNE
Sidney Schieffelin Osborne passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hood Osborne. A life long resident of Richmond, she graduated from St. Catherine's School and Harcum College. Mrs. Osborne was active in her community and volunteered her time at the Shepherd's Center. She is survived by five daughters, Schuyler Sneed, Sara Osborne, Tracy Osborne, Kathleen Broaddus and Gretchen French; her grandchildren, Vanessa, Mariah, Ben and Elizabeth; her sister, Margaret Clark Huber and mother-in-law, Marjorie Wallace. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Funeral notice later.
