Tracy L. Akers dies at age 37
Feb 24, 2002
Five bullets fired at close range were the impetus for Tracy Lynn Akers and his sister, Tammy, to found the Victims of Violent Crime Memorial.
Mr. Akers, who died Friday at age 37, was paralyzed from the neck down after those shots in 1982. They were said to have been fired by his ex-father-in-law. Mr. Akers, a Vinton resident, spent the rest of his life working on gun-control issues and the victims' support group.
The organization that started in Tammy Akers' living room now has about 400 members, mostly in the Richmond area.
Akers said her brother counseled victims' families over the telephone and, when possible, he made the trip to Richmond to speak at the group's annual memorial services.
"I will never forget the sight of him in his tuxedo, in a wheelchair, talking to those people," she said.
Akers added that victims' family members often sought solace from her brother, asking him to describe what it felt like to be shot, or to give them an idea of what a victim might have been thinking about in those final moments.
"He really tried to comfort them as best he could. He cared about the families."
Mr. Akers' alleged assailant was found not guilty by reason of insanity but still obtained a concealed weapons permit. In 1996, the Akers family fought - and won - to have that permit revoked, citing the 1993 Brady Bill.
The following year, Mr. Akers traveled to Washington to personally thank James Brady for his work in gun control.
In addition to his sister, survivors include his son, Robbie Akers of Lashmeet, W.Va.; his parents, Elizabeth Walker Akers of Vinton and David I. Akers of Willba, Tenn.; three brothers, Danny Akers of Baltimore, Md., David Akers of Richmond and Ernie Akers of Princeton, W.Va.; and two more sisters, Faith Akers of Richmond and Angie Akers of Vinton.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Directory in Princeton, W.Va.

June Carpenter
Oct 23, 2001
June Carpenter, a charter member of the Richmond Symphony, died Sunday as a result of kidney failure. She was 80.
A native of Richmond, Miss Carpenter graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She studied the cello at the Julliard School of Music and at Indiana University, said Eric P. Nolte, her son.
In 1957, Miss Carpenter was among the 100 musicians who started the Richmond Symphony. She often played first cello during her 38 years with the orchestra.
"She was a very competent cellist. She played all over the world," said Dr. Richard Edwards, professor emeritus at Virginia State University, where he was in charge of solo vocal performance.
Dr. Edwards met Miss Carpenter in 1968, when he and his wife moved to Richmond. Miss Carpenter also taught at VSU, her son said.
"She was our first best friend here," Dr. Edwards said. "She was full of pep, always anxious to do things."
Miss Carpenter also taught music lessons and started a number of quartets, trios and other ensembles in the Richmond area. She created the Lakeside String Quartet with Paul Nolte, Alfonse Gagne and Dr. Saul Kay.
She didn't have any experience with string quartets, Dr. Kay recalled, and relied in part on his knowledge and repertoire when they founded the group. A violinist by hobby, Dr. Kay is the retired chairman of the pathology department at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia.
"She was very enthusiastic," he said. "I introduced her to the late Beethoven string quartets and Bartok. She was very grateful for that, to the very end."
The Bartok she learned from Dr. Kay had an influence on her son as well.
"I was beating time to Bartok's string quartets with great enthusiasm when I was 2, my mother told me," Nolte said.
Nolte went on to study music and is a composer and pianist who works as a commercial airline pilot.
Miss Carpenter is survived by her son and his wife, Jan, of Westchester County, N.Y.,; and a sister, Beverly Styles of Palm Springs, Calif.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church, 1000 Blanton Ave.
