Constance Simons du Pont Darden
Feb 09, 2002
NORFOLK - Constance Simons du Pont Darden, widow of Virginia Gov. Colgate W. Darden Jr., has died. She was 97.
Mrs. Darden died Thursday at a Norfolk nursing home where she had lived for several years, said Sue Hill, administrative secretary at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
The burial Feb. 15 will be private. The church will hold a memorial service March 1 at noon, Hill said.
During her husband's long career in government, Mrs. Darden raised their three children and acted as an aide de camp for him. She also pursued interests in photography, birdwatching and music, playing the violin and viola well into her 80s.
Her husband, a former congressman and state legislator, was elected governor in 1941. He later served as president of the University of Virginia for 12 years. He died in 1981.
Constance Darden was born March 4, 1904, in Wilmington, Del., and grew up as one of eight girls and a boy in the family of Irenee du Pont, president of the DuPont Co. in Wilmington.
She graduated from Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and studied violin and viola privately in Philadelphia.
She married Darden in 1927 and moved to Norfolk.

Robert Broyles dies
Apr 06, 2001
By the book and uncompromising in his service to the many communities he served during his 35-year career, Robert G. Broyles made police work his life. And through police work, the Pennsylvania native found a home in Virginia.
Police chief of Blacksburg from 1974 to 1980, Mr. Broyles has "been a Hokie ever since," said Donna Broyles, his wife of 50 years.
Mr. Broyles, of Bracey, who also served as police chief in Hopewell, died Wednesday. He was 70.
Law enforcement was more than a vocation for Mr. Broyles, who once considered a career as a history teacher, said his wife.
After a six-year stint in the Navy, Mr. Broyles joined the police force in his hometown of Altoona, Pa. Two years later, Mr. Broyles joined the Arlington police department.
He was dedicated to the job, Mrs. Broyles said, but "police work never made much money." To make ends meet, he worked three part-time jobs and at the same time managed to earn a degree from American University.
From 1966 to 1968, he served as a U.S. adviser to the South Vietnamese national police.
After returning home, Mr. Broyles took two succeeding jobs as chief of police in his native Pennsylvania.
It was in Williamsburg, Pa., that community police work really came home for Mr. Broyles - literally. The family home had a line from the phone at the police station for after-hours calls, recalled Mrs. Broyles: "When the phone would ring, I would turn on the porch light because I knew he'd be passing by in about 15 minutes or so."
In 1974, Mr. Broyles was named chief of the Blacksburg police department, where he reformed police hiring procedures, enlarged the criminal investigation division and improved training in the department.
He resigned in 1980 in a dispute with a number of Town Council candidates. "He did not particularly care for politics in police work," Mrs. Broyles said, but "he always managed to work it out and compromise if he had to. The only thing he wouldn't compromise on was right and wrong."
Mr. Broyles moved to Hopewell as chief of police, remaining there until his retirement in 1989.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Broyles' survivors include his mother, Mary Hale Broyles Steckroth of Altoona, Pa.; his birth mother, Anna Hale Cowan Shipe of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, James W. Broyles of Chalfont, Pa.; a daughter, Donya B. Stephens of Riner; two brothers, Charles Shipe of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and George Shipe of Athens, Tenn.; and two sisters, Joan Seeley and Judi Bosowski, both of Pensacola, Fla.
Two funerals will be held for Mr. Broyles. The first, at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home in South Hill, will be on Friday at 7 p.m. The second, at Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg, will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held Sunday at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg at 2 p.m.
