BRUMFIELD
Charles Preston (C. P.) Brumfield Jr., 61, of Richmond, departed this life on Friday, August 17, 2001. He was a graduate of Roanoke College and Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a member of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir. He is survived by his loving wife, Melanie Smallwood Brumfield. Preceded in death by his son, Keith Coleman Ellis Brumfield. He is survived by four children, Charles Preston Kent Brumfield, Kevin Eugene Reilley Brumfield, Lydia Brooks Cota, and Christopher Preston Brumfield; two step-daughters, Anne Flynn Woodhouse and Elizabeth Paige Woodhouse; two grandchildren, Merie Eugenia Ellis Brumfield and Richard Alan Cota III; and one sister, Gene Brumfield Edmunds. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 20, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 8 North Laurel Street, Richmond, Virginia. A graveside service will be Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army W.E.S. Program, 39 N. Market Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23804.

BUTTON
Lela May Button, age 83, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2001 at Fauquier Hospital after a brief illness. She is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy Lewis Reilly of Reidsville, N.C. and Emily Warren Brittle of Mt. Airy, Md.; a sister, Emma Kerns of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Vinton Twyman of Glen Allen, Va.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ellen Brittle; a grandson, Jonathan Wesley Gourley; two great-grandchildren; a nephew and two nieces. Mrs. Button was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Powell Button; and her brothers, Joseph, Travis, and Malcolm Twyman. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 20 at 11 a.m. at the Culpeper Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Fuson officiating. Interment to follow in Culpeper Masonic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Baptist church, 310 S. CUTLER
Professor S. James Cutler, age 85, of Staunton, previously of Richmond, departed this life Thursday, August 16, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aurelia P. Cutler; two daughters, Joanne Cutler Powell and Jeri Cutler-Voltz; a sister, Edna Cutler Lesher; and a brother, Herbert N. Cutler. He is survived by his daughter and two sons-in-law, Jamie Cutler Morris, W. Page Morris and Thomas Wesley Voltz; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and where services will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. deJULIO
Doreen M. deJulio passed away August 16, 2001 at the age of 80. She was a British war bride and was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Christopher N. deJulio. She left behind two children, Gregory deJulio and his wife, Mary of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; and a daughter, Danielle Asbridge and her husband, Tim of Midlothian. She had five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. deJulio was one of the first war brides to arrive in this country during WWII. She crossed with 600 wounded men on the Ile de France. She was a graduate of Bedford School for Girls in England and a true British girl. Her life took her many places all over the world as an antique dealer and through her husband's career. Her passion in life was her family and her animals. Funeral services will be held later in Arundel, W. Sussex, England. Family will recieve friends Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd.

FLEMING
Jim Clayton Fleming, age 81, died Friday, August 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Walls Fleming; children, Mickie A. Fleming of Richmond, Alice Fleming Douglas of Farnham, Va. and Susan Fleming Combs of Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by his son, James C. Fleming Jr. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Jones and Pauline Bradshaw, both of Clinton, N.C.; brothers, David Allen Fleming of Richmond and William Allen Fleming of North Carolina. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Helen Gilmore. He was retired from SunTrust Bank and and Army veteran of WWII. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home. Burial Signal Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one prior to service.

GARDNER-BARTLAY
Little Angel Keshondra Monque Gardner-Bartlay went to be with the angels August 10, 2001. She is survived by her parents, Karen Gardner and Kenneth Bartlay; four brothers, Keyvon, Gilbert, Robert, Niko; one sister, Sisela; grandmother, Barbara Gardner; a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Saturday at K.L. Jordan Funeral Services, 5008 Nine Mile Rd. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. K L JORDAN

GRAMMER
Rudolph Preston Grammer, age 75, of Valentines, Va., died August 17, 2001. He was the owner of Rudy's Restaurant in Petersburg, Va. for 27 years. He retired to Lake Gaston and was an active member of Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Cox Grammer; a daughter, Judith G. Thayer of Chesterfield; two granddaughters, Theresa T. Duggan of Chesterfield and Sarah G. Layne of Glen Allen, Va.; two grandsons, Leslie E. Thayer III of Mechanicsville, Va. and Preston Grubbs of Brunswick, Ga.; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine G. Hollay of Hopewell and Helen Hafner of Chillicothe, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia G. Grubbs. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Ebony, Va., presided over by Father Steven Cowan. Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Va. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 67, Gasburg, Va. 23857 or Lucy Corr Foundation, P.O. Drawer 170, Chesterfield, Va. 23832.

GRISWALD
Miss Queenie Griswald of Richmond died August 17, 2001. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral notice later.

HOGGE
Malcolm Derwood Hogge, age 89, son of the late Calvin O. and Cora Milby Hogge, died at his home August 16, 2001. He retired from Baltimore County, Md. as a golf course maintenance assistant and was associated with the Greenmont Cemetery. Survivors include a brother, James Hogge and wife, Hilda; one sister, Georgie Purcell; two nephews, Edward Purcell Jr. and James Hogge Jr. A service of remembrance, conducted by the Reverend Timothy B. Kirby, will be held Sunday 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. In his memory, memorial contributions may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 3501 Providence Road, Hayes, Va. 23072.

HORNBERGER
Diane Beasley Hornberger, age 47, of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie Y. Wade. Survived by her spouse, Richard A. Hornberger; two children, Ruth V. Brown and Richard A. Hornberger Jr.; her parents, Daisy M. Carson and James M. Beasley; two brothers, James M. Beasley Jr. and John R. Carson; two grandchildren, Mathew A. and Ashley N. Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews; and two devoted great-aunts, who were special to her throughout her life, Celenia S. Price and Lillie M. Shelton. She was employed by the IRS. She was a friend to everyone who knew her and was loved by all. Family will receive friends 2 to 5 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 17 at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Shady Grove Rd. and Rt. 301, and where services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. with interment in Dale Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Maggie B. Hughes, formerly of 905 Norton St., departed this life August 17, 2001. The staff of the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home is serving her family.

LAYNE
James Monroe Layne, age 60, died August 16, 2001 at his residence in Farmville. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Annette M. Layne; three sons, Daron Layne and David Foster, all of Farmville, Doug Foster of Chesterfield; daughter, Mrs. Brenda Baddorf of Richmond; five sisters, 10 brothers, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends Saturday 7 to 9 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. Funeral services 2 p.m. Sunday at Spring Creek Baptist Church, Darlington Heights, Va. Interment church cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Hampton-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department.

Gertrude (Plunk) Leabough, 70, of Henrico County, formerly of Goochland, Va., departed this life Thursday, August 16, 2001. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home (new facility), Goochland, Va. Funeral notice later.

LOWE
Mrs. Frances Cowling Lowe, 76, a resident of Wakefield, died Friday, August 17, 2001 in Waverly HealthCare Center. A native of Surry County, she was born on October 24, 1924, the daughter of the late Bernice Everette and Edna Branch Cowling. She was a member of the Rocky Hock United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Vernon V. Lowe; three daughters, Delma Lowe Rogers of Raleigh, N.C., Bonnie Lowe Looney and Trayce Lowe Pearman, both of Midlothian; two sons, Wayne A. Lowe and C. Brent Lowe, both of Wakefield; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Earle Schwichtenberg of Tucson, Ariz. and Dorothy Moody of Wakefield; two brothers, Bernice E. Cowling, Jr. and Albert C. Cowling, both of Waverly. funeral services will be held in Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Wakefield on Sunday, August 19, 2001 at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Don Chapman. Burial will be in Rocky Hock Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield on Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m . MacIVOR
Barbara Edwards MacIvor, age 79, of Marysville, Ohio, wife of Malcolm MacIvor, M.D., departed this life Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at her home surrounded by her loving and devoted family following a long battle with cancer. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, a steadfast friend, and a patient listener and wise counselor to many. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Marysville, she was a devout Christian and loyal supporter of all worthy causes. She was a former member and past president of The Woman's Parliament and a member of the Western Reserve Alumni Association. Shy and retiring by nature, she sought no recognition for herself but preferred to give the credit for successes to others. She gave her life in gentle love and truly gained from Heaven all she asked, that most precious gift of all, a Savior and a Friend. She was born November 5, 1921 in Springfield, Ohio, to the late Walter V. and Gertrude M. Edwards. She graduated from Wittenberg University in 1943 and from Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Western Reserve in 1945 with a master's degree in nursing. She taught surgical nursing at Ohio State University and at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Malcolm MacIvor, whom she married September 7, 1947 at the home of her family in Springfield; three children, Dr. Duncan and Virginia MacIvor of Richmond, Va., John and Sue MacIvor of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Peggy and Herbert Hendricks of Marysville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Lauren and Craig MacIvor of Richmond Va., James and Beth MacIvor of Bellefontaine, and Jessica, Heather and Thomas Hendricks of Marysville; a sister, Phyllis Edwards of Springfield, Ohio; a brother, Walter (Louise) Edwards of Phoenix; a brother-in-law, Robert (Virginia) MacIvor of Marysville; and many nieces and nephews including Dr. Virginia MacIvor (Henning) Meyn and Angus (Roberta) MacIvor of Cleveland. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church of Marysville. Rev. Thomas A. Lamb and Rev. John M. Groat will officiate. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Underwood Funeral Home, Marysville. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to First Presbyterian Church of Marysville, Loving Care Hospice, Union County Cancer Society or Memorial Hospital of Union County. Mr. Gilbert T. "Sprout" Mattox Sr., 79, of Emporia, died Friday, August 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Tiny Coker Mattox; two sons, Gil Mattox Jr. and wife, Jean of Courtland and Timmy Mattox and wife, Sharon of Jarratt; four grandchildren, Jennifer Thomas and husband, Richard of Franklin, Andrew Mattox of Courtland, and Daniel and Jordan Mattox of Jarratt; one great-granddaughter, Kristian Elizabeth Thomas of Franklin; three sisters, Leola Fisher of Drewryville, Nell Mitchell of Emporia, Margaret Duckworth and husband, Bob of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Minnie Mattox of Drewryville; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday (tonight) 6 to 8 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt. The funeral service will be held graveside 4 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2001 at Emporia Cemetery.

Mrs. Hazelle E. Means of Walmsley Blvd. departed this life Thursday, August 16, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Steets. Funeral notice later.
