Departed this life November 7, 2001, Mr. Courtney Lee Brown of Richmond. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later.

BUJAK
John J. Bujak, 80, of West Point, Va., died Friday, November 9, 2001. His wife, Ray and son, John Jr. preceded him in death. He was a World War II veteran. John was a self-employed welder and the owner of West Point Welding. He retired from Chesapeake Corporation. He is survived by three daughters, Pat Kemp, Dianna Sanders and Donna Bunch, all of West Point; two sisters, Julia Zawodny of West Point and Stella Grabon of New Jersey; a brother, Stanley Bujak of Texas; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Point, Va., with burial in St. Theresa Cemetery. There will be a Christian Vigil at 7 p.m. Sunday at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point, Va., after which the family will receive friends. Memorials may be made to West Point Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Inc., Box X, West Point, Va. 23181.

COLEMAN
Charles E. Coleman Sr., formerly of Montpelier, Va., passed away suddenly Sunday, November 4, 2001, in Philadelphia, Pa. He is survived by three sons, Orlanda L. Charles E. Jr. and Shawn L. Coleman Sr.; two daughters, Renata C. Woodson and Virgie Coleman-Cousins; his children's mother, Madelyn S. Coleman; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one aunt, Mary White Brown; one uncle, William Mixon; a host of other relatives and friends. His memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va., Rev. John Gordon officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Beaverdam, Va.

COMER
Arthur Lee Comer Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2001 after several years of a courageous fight against several illnesses. He is survived by his former wife, Alice Comer; three children, Arthur L. Comer Jr. of Midlothian, Va., Mary Cofield of Richmond, Virginia and Bertha Reynolds of Bartow, Florida; two sons-in-law, Roland Cofield and John Reynolds; one daughter-in-law, Theresha Comer; one sister, Matilda Hicks of Fort Wayne, Indiana; five grandchildren, Edrick Cofield, Tara Howard, Saketra Ramsey, Chanel Brown and John Reynolds; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of dedicated cousins and other relatives. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 1827 Hull Street, where the family will receive friends Sunday, November 11 from 4 to 5 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Monday, 1 p.m. Rev. Lewis Blakey officiating. Interment Dale Memorial Park. Relatives and friends assemble at the funeral home Monday, 12:30 p.m.

CORNETT
Mrs. Helen Jones Cornett of Culpeper, Va., passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2001 at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community after an extended period of illness, at the age of 75 years. Born May 27, 1926, in Bristol, Va. to the late Cebart and Ruth Almeda Anderson Jones, Mrs. Cornett moved from Richmond to Culpeper in 1962 where she has since been a lifetime resident. She was a good friend to many, and for most years she enjoyed being a homemaker, a devoted mother and a traveler who loved shopping and had a love for hats. She was also a member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Culpeper Women's Club. Surviving are her husband, James E. Cornett Jr. of Culpeper, Va.; her children, Pamela C. Hoag and her husband, Paul of Culpeper, J. Phillip Cornett and his wife, Stacie of Richmond, Va., James E. Cornett III of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Cynthia C. Edwards and her husband, Rex of Culpeper; four well-loved grandchildren, Kristen and Alexa Cornett and Halley and Ethan Edwards; sisters, Vivian Loudy and Ester Loudy, both of Bristol, Va.; other nieces and nephews and extended family who remember her pleasant outlook and spirited personality with fond memories. Preceding her in death are her four brothers, Earl F. Jones, Carl F. Jones, Hubert H. Jones and Kyle O. Jones. Graveside funeral services will be held on 11 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2001, at the Culpeper Masonic Cemetery with Rev. Marvin C. Cook of Culpeper, Va. and Rev. David Delaney of Roanoke, Va. officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, November 11, at Clore-English Funeral Home, Culpeper, Va. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers are Joe Calemine, Elwood Smoot, Richard Harris, Ted Gore, Jack Inskeep, Cecil Pickeral, Earl Hawkins and R.J. Inskeep. Memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Regional Hospital Foundation, 501 Sunset Lane, Culpeper, Va. 22701 and/or the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. COTTRELL
Matthias Stephen Cottrell, 92, son of Richard and Ellen O'Dwyer Cottrell, died Thursday, November 8, 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, John, Richard, Lawrence and Joseph; and his two sisters, Marie Sullivan and Cecelia "Dolly" Ward. He is survived by his devoted wife of 73 years, Elizabeth Parrish Cottrell; his three children, Ann C. Legnaioli of Richmond, Joseph M. Cottrell and his wife, Jeannine of Farifax, Va. and Beverly Gayle Chapa and her husband, Greg of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Cottrell was a City of Richmond firefighter for over 30 years, retiring in 1975. Most of his career was spent at Truck Co. No. 1 on East Broad St. A Christian Wake service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, November 11, at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Monday at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

CROCKETT
Rudolph T. Crockett of Richmond departed this life November 7, 2001. He is survived by five daughters, Ann, Regina, Ronda, Marilynn and Gayle; a son, Reginald; three sisters, Virginia, Predencia and Jennie Faye; two brothers, James and Joseph; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St., where funeral services will be held today, Saturday, 2 p.m. Rev. Dr. Leroy Jones officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Family and friends attending services assemble at the funeral home today, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

DIX
James "Malcolm" Dix Sr., 83, of Richmond, passed away November 7, 2001. He was the husband of the late Dorothy H. Dix and is survived by three children, Eileen Williams, Janie Stembridge and Jimmy Dix Jr. and his wife, Jennifer; also a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Dix was a staff sergeant in the Army during WWII, was retired from Seaboard Coast Line Railroad after 44 years of service and since 1958 had a hobby of recycling newspapers in the Richmond area. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, November 10. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

HARLOW
Martin Leslie "Pop" Harlow, age 99, of Rockville, died Thursday, November 8, 2001. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening and at any time after 2 p.m. Sunday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Interment will be in Berea Baptist Church Cemetery in Rockville.

HARRIS
Despina Harris (Haritakis), 96, of Richmond, Va., passed away Thursday, November 8, 2001. She was born in Alatsata, Asia Minor. She was the widow of Manuel Pechas (Petsitis) and Andrew S. Haritakis. She was a founding member of the Philoptochos Society, Myrophores Chapter 1097. She is survived by nieces, Despina Crist and husband, Robert; Maria Tsotras and husband, Stefano, all of Athens, Greece; nephews, Rev. Anthony Pentikis of Bellingham, Wash. and James Pentikis and wife, Elizabeth of Somerville, Mass.; a cousin, Ourania Aspromgos of Astoria, N.Y.; and seven godchildren. Mrs. Harris loved to work in her garden hours at a time. Now she is working in God's garden. Visitation will be held at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., where a Trisagion prayer service will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Malvern Ave. Interment Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cathedral Endowment Fund.

JOHNSON
Departed this life November 8, 2001, Deitra Johnson of King William Co., Va. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. McCarthy, Director.

LUSH
George Ben Lush, an Amelia County dairyman, died November 9, 2001 at age 93. Raised in Chesterfield, Va., he later bought a dairy farm in Amelia where he was active in community affairs. He helped to bring the telephone to the county, build the War Memorial Building and served as president of Ruritans and Young Farmers. He was active in Mount Herman Baptist Church in Chesterfield and later in Piedmont Baptist Church in Amelia where he was a deacon for over 50 years until his death. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Brooks Lush; daughters, Gail Powell of New Zealand and Bonnie Yospin of Amelia; son, Sandy R. Lush of Amelia; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Lushaven Farm in Amelia on Saturday, November 10 from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Piedmont Baptist Church, 17801 Genito Road, Amelia, on Sunday, November 11 at 4 p.m., followed by fellowship. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Piedmont Baptist Church Building Fund or the James L. Hamner Library.

MASON
John Edward Mason, 53, of Chesapeake, Va., died November 8, 2001. He was born in Opelika, Ala. and worked as a sales manager for Truck Enterprizes. He attended Centerville Baptist Church in Chesapeake, was a U.S.A.F. veteran, serving as an instructor pilot, received his bachelor's degree from Auburn University and his MBA from the College of William & Mary. Survivors include his wife, Lynn Townsend Mason of Chesapeake; sons, Corey S. Mason and his wife, Cheryl of Lexington, N.C. and Travis R. Mason and his wife, Christy of Bozeman, Mont.; mother, Sara D. Mason of Opelika, Ala.; brother, Dan L. Mason and his wife, Jerry of Anniston, Ala.; grandchildren, Hannah Mason and Sarah Mason; mother-in-law, Colleen Gfeller and her husband, Warren of Wichita, Kan. Mr. Mason is being sent from Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel to Frederick Funeral Home in Opelika, Ala. for service and burial. Family asks that flowers be omitted and memorials made to the American Heart Association.

MEARS
Vernelle Margaret Blankenship Mears, widow of William J. Mears, died on November 8, 2001. A Richmond native, she was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1942. Mrs. Mears retired from the City of Richmond Commissioner of Revenue office after 36 years of service. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi social/service sorority for 53 years. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia B. and William E. Dvorak; nieces, Jacqueline D. Bolt, Victoria Dvorak-Cremins and Beth Dvorak Davenport, all of Richmond; nephews, Jay P. Dvorak of Richmond, and William E. Dvorak III of Chicago, Ill.; seven great-nieces and great-nephews and an abundance of wonderful friends. Remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday, 4 to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Beta Sigma Phi memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. A Rosary will be said 7 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of the Resurrection will take place at St. Edward Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Dr., on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. PARKER
Dessie Lee Parker, age 85, of King William, widow of W. Henley Parker, died November 8, 2001. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Crawford Parker and William Henley (Buddy) Parker Jr. and wife, Laurie; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, William and Wesley Parker; two brothers, Richard and Robert Skelton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Remains rest at the B.W. White Funeral Home, Aylett. Service Sunday, 2 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church. Interment church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sharon Baptist Church Building Fund or King William Rescue Squad.

PEARSON-ROUNTREE
Virginia Phaup Pearson Rountree passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2001. She was born April 15, 1912, the daughter of the late Arthelius and Mary Horner Phaup of Chesterfield Co., Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Etheldred W. Pearson; an infant son, William M. Pearson; and by her second husband, Shirley D. Rountree. Virginia had been an active member of Monument Heights Baptist Church, The Eastern Star Chapter 11, The Scottish Rite Woman's Club, the Christian Woman's Club and the National Federated Craft Chapter 60. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas A. and Jane W. Pearson; her granddaughters and their spouses, Mary-Stuart and Kevin Gremer, Katherine and MacGregor Gould; and a great-granddaughter, Jane Carlton Gremer. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 9 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Portsmouth, Va. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 9 at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Eastern Star Home of Virginia, 3000 Chamberlayne Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227.

POOL
Shirley Maxey B. Pool, "Strawberry the Clown," of Blackstone, Va., preceded to Glory by her husband, James Richard Pool Sr., died Friday, November 9, 2001. She is survived by their children, Wayne A. Bryant and his wife, Kathy E. Bryant, Richard Pool Jr. and Selena Perkinson; five grandchildren, Carla, Jessica, Bonnie and Nicholas Perkinson and Kaylee Bryant; two brothers, Earl and Henry Maxey; and three sisters, Gaynelle Armstrong, June Jeter and Mary Newman. Mrs. Pool was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Blackstone, where she served as a lay pastor and in the UMW. She was a member of the "Upper Room" Emmaus of Southside Virginia and a volunteer for Central Virginia Hospice. Shirley enjoyed serving her Lord in many capacities, from lay pastoring to clowning as "Strawberry" to whomever needed to feel God's love. Wherever Christian friends gathered, Shirley loved to be in their midst. Her clown ministry, Sunday school classes and Emmaus took her to many parts of Virginia. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 11 in Crenshaw United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hamner McMillian Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Crenshaw Methodist Church Building Fund, 200 Church St., Blackstone, Va. 23824, Blackstone Fire Dept. Building Fund, 101 W.
