Departed this life October 31, 2001, John W. Blanding Sr. of 2017 Gilbert St. He is survived by his loving wife, Leila S. Blanding; five daughters, Margo, Beverly A., Aleta D., Robin R. and Karen Blanding; four sons, John W. Jr., Eric M., Craig G. and Timothy Blanding; his first wife and mother of his nine children; four stepdaughters, Cecelia Hutchins, LaSaundra Collins, Renee King and Cynthia Hutchins; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Daniel Sr., Cleveland, and Isaac Moore Jr.; two aunts, one uncle, host of nieces, nephews and cousins, four sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday. Rev. Sharon Broaddus officiating. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 12:45 p.m. Monday.

BOLES
John Brian Boles, formerly of Richmond and having current residences in Urbanna, Va. and Clinton, Ohio, died October 22, 2001 at his home in Clinton after a short battle with cancer. John is survived by his wife, Laura; two stepdaughters, Jessie and Megan of Clinton; and a daughter, Savannah; and his first wife, Peggy of Cincinnati. He is also survived by his parents, Richard and Marilyn; a brother, Dick; and sister, Anne, all of Little Rock, Ark. as well as a brother, Bob of New York City. John was previously employed by Wheat First Securities in Richmond and at the time of his death was the President of Pinnacle Management Group, Inc. Private services were held on October 25 in Clinton, Ohio. A Memorial Service will be held on November 6 at 7 p.m. at Saluda Baptist Church in Saluda, Va. BRICKER
Shirley Z. Bricker, 74, passed away November 2, 2001 at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Stanley A. Bricker; her parents, Ted and Mabel Zubradt; and two brothers, Russell W. and Ronald E. Zubradt. She is survived by her daughter, Linda M. Bricker of Richmond; brother, Richard D. Zubradt and his wife, Rose of Fort Collins, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Dr. John B. Bricker and his wife, Gene of Richmond; two sisters-in-law, Lenora M. Bricker of Winter Park, Fla. and Norma Zubradt of Ankeny, Iowa; nieces, nephews, and good friends. Shirley retired from The Martin Agency and was active in the Richmond Ad Club for many years. Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 5 at 10 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to Bon Secours Hospice, 5857 Bremo Rd., Suite 710, Richmond, Va. 23226 or a charity of your choice. BUENO
Annie Hall Bueno, 36, of Richmond, died November 1, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Manolo Bueno; and children, Jessica, Jose, Patrica, Sharon and Twila Rodas. She is also survived by her father, Richard B. Hall Sr.; her mother, Bonnie L. Russell; grandmother, Dorothy B. Etchinson; sisters and brothers, Wayne E. Hall, Virginia H. Rodas, Loretta H. Brown, Richard B. Hall II; one grandchild, Ruben Rodas; and many nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and where services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2001. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

BUFORD
Retired U.S. Army Colonel Lanier Dunn Buford, age 85, of Alexandria, Va., passed away October 23, 2001 from complications related to pneumonia. His wife, Patricia O'Brien Buford, predeceased him in March 1991. Col. Buford was an Eagle Scout with the All Eagle Patrol of Troop 5 in Richmond, Va. and a graduate of Virginia military Institute (Class of '38). He served his country in World War II with Patton's 3rd Army from the Normandy landings through the Battle of the Bulge and on into Germany, finishing his wartime service as a tank battalion commander. Col. Buford also served his country as a military Attache during the French Indochina War, acting as, among other things, a military observer in the City of Dien Bien Phu during the siege of that city. Other assignments included posts as Assistant military Attache to the French Republic and military Attache to the Republic of Tunisia. His honors included the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and the Master Parachutist badge. He was a member of the Army-Navy Club, the Country Club of Virginia and the United States Horse Cavalry Association. He is survived by his sons, Lanier D. Buford Jr. of Front Royal, Va. and Patrick O'Brien Buford of Woodbridge, Va.; his brothers, Algernon Sidney Buford III of Lexington, Va., Robert Strother Buford of Richmond, Va.; a niece, Molly Pollard Buford; and nephews, Robert Strother Buford Jr., Lewis Burwell Buford and Algernon Sidney Buford IV. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at Arlington National Cemetery.

CANADA
Edward Graham Canada Sr., 80, passed away at his home on November 3, 2001. Born in Chapel Hill, N.C. on April 17, 1921, he was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Knight Canada. He is survived by his children, Edward Jr. and his wife, Bethann, Patricia Leonard, and William and his fiancee, Kathy; his grandchildren, Erika Leonard, Christopher Leonard and his wife, Krystyl, Edward III, Meryl and Bill; his great-granddaughter, Zoe; his loving companion, Sarah; and his dear friends, Kristina, Courtney, and Taylor. Edward was an active member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and an elder. He gave forty years of service and support to the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a scoutmaster. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow and a recipient of the Silver Beaver award. He was active in the Masons and participated in many community service activities including cooking for the Freedom House. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday (today) with a Masonic Service at 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Southminster Presbyterian Church. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Walter Draper Campership Fund, Memorial Child Guidance Clinic, 701 N. 25th St., Richmond, Va. 23223.

CARY
Robert L. Cary Sr., 72, of Ruther Glen, departed this life October 31, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Cary; one daughter, Anita Wright; three sons, Robert Jr., Michael and Stacy Cary. Remains rest at the F.E. Dabney Funeral Home, Henry St., Ashland. Funeral 1 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2001, at the Jerusalem Baptist Church, Doswell, Rev. E. Richard Swan, pastor, officiating. Interment Belmount Cemetery. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to services. The Dabney's morticians in charge of arrangements.

CHRISTIAN
Alvin Maurice Christian, a son of the late James and Adele Churchwell Christian, was born on July 27, 1926 in Richmond and departed this life on Monday, October 29, 2001 at McGuire VA Hospice. He is survived by a loving sister, Glenys Christian Clemons of New Orleans, La.; nephew, David K. Clemons of Columbus, Ohio; two nieces, Hollise C. Bello of Peach Tree City, Ga. and Camilla C. Spencer of Stockton, Calif.; brother-in-law, Billy V. Clemons of New Orleans; two cousins, Harvey and Herbert Churchwell; three great-nieces and two great-nephews; as well as a host of Christian friends and church family, two devoted, Joyce and Samuel Turner; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday at 12 noon from Moore Street Baptist Church, 1408 West Lee St. Dr. Alonza Lawrence, pastor; Dr. G.G. COTHRAN
Mildred Thorp Cothran, 80, of Richmond, widow of Ben Cothran, died Friday, November 2, 2001 after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Elmore and Lucy Williamson Thorpe of Nottoway County, Va. Before her illness, she was an active member of the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra McCrickard of Mechanicsville; her son, Benjamin Franklin Cothran Jr. of Richmond; and two grandsons, Michael Fields of Richmond and Melvin Fields II of Fayston, Vt. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2001. Interment private.

CRIPE
Janet K. Cripe of Richmond died Thursday, November 1, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan P. Cripe; a son, Christopher Cripe; and her parents, John and Nora Janus. She is survived by a son, Marc A. Cripe; two nieces and their husbands, Carole and Robert Schmitt, Bonnie and Merlin Markiewicz; six great-nieces and nephews, Kimberly, Alan, Michael and John Schmitt, Joy Bilger and Janus Wilken; and five great-great-nieces and nephews; a sister, Florence Boulos; and two brothers, Henry and John Janus. Mrs. Cripe loved art, to travel and her family. She was a longtime member of IKEBANA of Richmond, the Willow Oaks Country Club and the Woman's Committee of the Richmond Symphony. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity. Departed this life October 31, 2001, Joseph M. Dabney of 9810 Old Church Rd., New Kent, Va., formerly of Goochland Co. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife of 43 years, Dorothy A. Dabney; nine children, Vivian McDonald of California, Calvin Hopkins of Goochland, Joseph Turner of Richmond, Marzene Dabney Sr. of Georgia, Marvin Dabney Sr. of Richmond, Mary Akrie of New Kent, Marietta Dabney of Glen Allen, Matthew Dabney Sr. of New Kent and Melinda Greene of New Kent; one brother, Thomas Dabney of Goochland; one sister, Jacqueline Jones of New York; 21 grandchildren, Tonia, Monique, Michael, Kim, Angie, Marvin Jr., Mykhelle, Marshai, Chenay, Morgan, Ashley, Monae, Marzene Jr., Joseph, Matthew Jr., Britney, Tedmund, Michael Jr., Mekayla, Dwight III and Jasmine; five great-grandchildren, Tarmuan, Quincy, Tolliver, Jazmine and Tyce; two sons-in-law, Michael Akrie Sr. and Dwight Greene Jr., both of New Kent; three daughters-in-law, Gwendolyn Hopkins of Goochland, April Dabney of Georgia and Tamara Dabney of New Kent; six sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. DALEY
James Clement Daley, 21, beloved son of Mary Jane and James Daley of Richmond, died suddenly on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 in Marion, S.C. A 1998 graduate of James River High School, "Jimmy" is also survived by his sister, Erin Dyer and her husband, Ashley Dyer of Richmond and his grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Hauck of Baldwin, N.Y. and Mrs. Margaret Zimmerman of Amityville, N.Y. Jimmy, who worked at Capel Rugs in Richmond, was an avid softball and basketball player who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was born in Germany on October 31, 1980. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Funeral Liturgy will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

EASTMAN
Isabella Holfer Eastman of Gloucester, died on Novemer 3, 2001. She was born in Gatesville, N.C. on October 23, 1907 and was the daughter of the late Annie Brown and James Luther Hofler, and was the widow of the Reverend Reginald Wells Eastman, rector of Ware Church in Gloucester from 1942-1975. She is survived by her brother, John Gatling Hofler of Raleigh, N.C.; and other family members. She was a member of Ware Episcopal Church and the Garden Club of Gloucester. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at 11 a.m. by Rev. Daniel O. Worthington Jr. Memorial donations may be made to Ware Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 616, Gloucester, Va. 23061. Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, is in charge of arrangements.

FONES
Robert F. Fones (Humpy), age 73, of Mechanicsville, died November 2, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lena M. Fones; children, Juanita R. Wynne, Linda Beasley, Robert (Pete) Fones and Roy (Jerry) Fones; one sister, Martha Linton; and a number of grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. with a prayer service at 3 p.m. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

GILBERT
W. Dennis Gilbert, 58, of Colonial Heights, died on November 2, 2001 at his residence. A native of Pittsburg, Kansas, he was the son of the late Walter Philip and Bertha Riely Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was an employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation, and a member of the Petersburg Eagles Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Mary R. Gilbert; and son, Curtis Lee Gilbert, both of Springfield, Mo.; and connected relatives. Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2001, in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Chaplain Alane Miles will officiate. Interment will be in Waco Cemetery, Waco, Missouri, at a later date. The family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crater Community Hospice, 840 W. GRAY
Elmer Stringfellow Gray, 96, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001, in Chattanooga, Tenn., where she resided for the past three years, having lived most of her life in Waverly, Va. A native Virginian, she was born at Belair Farm in Culpeper County, the daughter of the late George Stringfellow and Mamie McMullen Stringfellow. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Women's College where she earned a bachelor's degree in both Latin and Mathematics; a lifelong member of the Episcopalian Church; a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Waverly at both the parish and diocesan level, and served as Altar Guild head; had served as a board member of the Order of St. Luke Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, and was a member of the Virginia Historical Society. During WWII, she was employed by the United States Army at Ft. Lee, Va. as an editor of technical journals. Mrs. Gray was the widow of the late Alfred Landon "Pete" Gray. She was also preceded in death by a son, George Stringfellow Gray. Mrs. Gray is survived by her son, John D. Gray of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; her sister, Frances Stringfellow Gray of Newport News, Va.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2001, at Christ Episcopal Church, 203 E. Main St., Waverly, Va., with the Rev. Macon Walton and Dr. Rufus Womble officiating. Burial will be in Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 928, Waverly, Va. 23890, the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, P.O.
