SPANN
Robert G. Spann, Lt. Col., U.S. Army (Ret.), age 68, of Richmond, died Saturday, September 30, 2000 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Katharine Ann Spann; one son, John Spann and his wife, Lisa; a daughter, Susan Spann; one brother, Rufus Spann; two grandchildren, Amber and Jesse Spann. Mr. Spann was born in Sardis, Ark., and was a graduate of Arkansas State University, where he was starting quarterback from 1953 to 1955. He was voted MVP of the Tangerine Bowl in 1953. Mr. Spann received his Master’s degree in Law Enforcement Administration from Michigan State in 1965. He retired in 1975 from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service in the military Police Corps. Mr. Spann was both Airborne and Ranger qualified and served tours in Korea and Vietnam. He was employed for ten years in the Virginia Department of Corrections and ultimately achieved the position of Deputy Director of Adult Services. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Derbyshire Baptist Church, 8800 Derbyshire Rd., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will be at a later date in Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 145447, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-5447.

STANKUS
Virginia Inez Powell Stankus, 85, widow of Joseph W. Stankus, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2000 in Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Spurgeon Thomas and Annie Duke Powell, and was born December 1, 1914 in Summit, N.C. She is survived by her son, Joseph W. Stankus Jr. of Richmond; six daughters, Anne Patterson of Carlsbad, Calif., Maria McHugh, Joan Gentry, both of Richmond, Virginia McIntyre of Perry, Ohio, Rita Mulcahy of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dolores Ford of Hinsdale, Ill.; 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, S. Talmadge Powell of Fullerton, Calif.; and four sisters, Jeanne Bailey Bly of Jenison, Mich., Adelaide Gallaer of Hampton, Hattie Hoke of Alexandria, and Elsie Slate of Emporia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Stankus was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and was past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court 1210 in Richmond, and a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Thomas, W.Va. She graduated from the College of William and Mary and taught at St. Gertrude’s High School in Richmond until her retirement in 1979. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, with a Rosary service being held at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Thomas, W.Va. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Thomas, W.Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Gertrude High School in Richmond.

TAYLOR
Mrs. Edmonia Turner Taylor, age 86, of Powhatan, entered eternal rest September 30, 2000 in Richmond, Va. She is survived by one son, Geroy A. Taylor; two grandchildren, Terrence M. Taylor Sr. (Karen) and Teairra G. Taylor; one great-grandson, Terrence M. Taylor Jr.; two daughters-in-law, Francis W. Taylor and Linda A. Taylor; and a host of other relatives and friends, three devoted, Rena Dudley, Floyd Bates and Margaret Harris. Her remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m. at Hollywood Baptist Church, Powhatan. Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to service. Rev. Revell Hicks, officiating, with interment in the church cemetery.

THURSTON
Walter Lee Thurston, of Sandston, Va., died Friday, September 29, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Thurston of Mechanicsville; three daughters, Janet Lee and Rita Snow, both of Sandston and Wonda Lee Thurston of Richmond; three sisters, Alberta, Anne and Doris; and four grandchildren, Kimberly, David, Jessi and Linnea; three great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Joey and Noah. Mr. Thurston was retired from AT&T. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

Departed this life Friday, September 29, 2000, Michael Haywood Washington, age 11, of King William, Va. He is survived by his loving parents, Oppielle Washington of King William, Va. and Michael Washington of Aylett, Va.; one brother, Jamie Mukuriah; two sisters, Selena Washington and Varyn Parham of King William; caring and devoted paternal grandparents, Freddie and Lorraine Washington of Aylett; maternal grandparents, Eva Washington of Alhambre, Calif. and Leon Harris of King William; great-grandmother, Elnora Spurlock of Aylett; a host of aunts, two devoted, Carolyn Vessels of Aylett and Ann Harris of King William; uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends, among them one special, John Holmes. Remains rest at the H.W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 3 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. WILBY
Julia Marie Wilby, 15, of Midlothian, passed away suddenly on September 29, 2000. She is survived by her parents, James and Janice Wilby; her brother and sister, Joshua and Jenna Wilby; her grandmother, Ruth Hall of Philadelphia; and two uncles, John and Paul Rulli. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd. John Daniel Call

Dr. John Daniel Call practiced internal medicine for 50 years at his office in the Lee Medical Building on Monument Avenue and in association with the former Stuart Circle Hospital, where he had served as chief of staff.
He and his brother, the late Dr. Manfred Call, served as the first student-health doctors at what now is Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr. Call, 88, died Wednesday at his Richmond home after a lengthy illness.
A Richmond native and the son of a doctor who was one of the founders of Stuart Circle Hospital, he earned his bachelor's and medical degrees at the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Raven Society and the track and swimming teams.
Dr. Call did his internship at Virginia Mason Hospital and his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic. While he was at the Mayo Clinic, he earned a master's degree in medicine from the University of Minnesota.
During World War II, he served in the South Pacific on the destroyer USS Buchanan as a lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps.
He was a member of the Doctor's Mayo Society, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the American Medical Association and the Medical Society of Virginia. He was a director of the Lee Medical Office Building.
An avid golfer, Dr. Call was a member of the Country Club of Virginia and the Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club. He maintained boats in Deltaville and Indian Creek to take him fishing in the Chesapeake Bay.
He often visited Amelia County to join friends and family in hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Virginia Anderson Call; sons Richard Anderson Call and Dr. Robert Somerville Call, both of Richmond, Dr. William Clopton Call of Crimora and Dr. John Daniel Call Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mich; and a daughter, Katherine Grainer of Goochland.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hollywood Cemetery.

ARCHER
William Thomas (Mike) Archer Jr. of Richmond, departed this life Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at McGuire Veterans Hospital. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

BALDWIN
Rev. Cornelius Mathew Baldwin departed this life August 13, 2001. He was born on October 26, 1932 in North Carolina to the late Mack and Nazzaree Baldwin. He is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah A. Baldwin; two daughters, Brenda L. Price and Eunice D. Baldwin; son, Anthony G. Baldwin; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; sister, Mrs. Evelyn B. Robinson; one uncle, George A. Taylor Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Eulogistic services will be held at Cedar Street Baptist Church, 2301 Cedar Street, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. BERRY
Virginia S. Berry, age 79, of Tappahannock, died August 16, 2001. She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Castellaw; a son, Edward T. Berry Jr.; three grandchildren, Edward T. Berry III, Mark R. Berry and Jennifer R. Castellaw; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Webster and Joyce Turner; and a brother, Thomas A. Sickal. Remains rest at the B.W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Service 3 p.m. Sunday at Smyrna Christian Church. Interment in church cemtery.

BISHOP
Russell Clarke Bishop, 73, of Chesterfield Co., passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2001. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired employee of VEPCO. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with interment at Blandford Cemetery. Andrew B. (A.B.) Carver of 3405 Terminal Ave., departed this life Monday, August 13, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Essie J. Carver; four daughters, Andrea C. Maddox, Frances Beryl Lambert, Freda A. Carver and Leisa C. Harris; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosena C. Lockwood of Connecticut; one brother, Frank R. Carver Sr.; one son-in-law, Calvin C. Maddox Jr.; one brother-in-law, Lawrence B. Lockwood Sr.; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, among them a devoted niece, Marilyn Adetona, and a devoted cousin, Ella Carver; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where the family will receive friends Friday (today), 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 18, 1 p.m. at Ebenezer AME Church, 4001 Terminal Ave., Rev. Judy Mae Smith Cauthorne, born March 18, 1947, quietly slipped into eternal rest at MCV Hospital Monday, August 13, 2001. She leaves to mourn a devoted daughter, Demetria Cauthorne; two grandchildren, DeJohn Wilson, John Wilson Jr.; mother, Laylia Simmons; stepfather, Curtis Simmons Sr. of South Carolina; father, Alton Smith of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, five stepsisters, two brothers, two stepbrothers; a devoted friend, Joseph Clayton; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Alice Elizabeth Johnson Clarke of 3300 Kingsdale Road, Richmond, departed this life on Thursday, August 9, 2001, after a timely and lengthy illness. She was the oldest of four children born to the late Henry Johnson Sr. and Mamie Irene Robinson Johnson. She is survived by a caring and loving son, Derwin; one sister, Ruby J. Turner; two loving and devoted brothers, Henry and Robert T. Johnson; two aunts, Beulah J. Allen and Louise Robinson Bey; several nieces, several nephews, two sisters-in-law, Eva W. Clarke and Arlene M. Johnson (who was loving and devoted to Alice); two brothers-in-law, William H. and Joseph R. Clarke; one loving and special friend, Alma B. Watkins; one devoted and caring couple, Theodore and Ethel Crawley; innumerable cousins, among them one very special, Magnolia (Maggie) Patron; a caring and devoted care-giver, Brenda Taylor; other relatives and friends. Professor S. James Cutler, age 85, of Staunton, previously of Richmond, departed this life Thursday, August 16, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aurelia P. Cutler; two daughters, Joanne Cutler Powell and Jeri Cutler-Voltz; a sister, Edna Cutler Lesher; and a brother, Herbert N. Cutler. He is survived by his daughter and two sons-in-law, Jamie Cutler Morris, W. DARGINIS
Efigenia "Effie" Darginis, age 95, of Richmond went home to be with the Lord, August 13, 2001. She was the widow of Varsames "Bill" Darginis. She is survived by her daughter, Carrie Balderson and husband, Robert "Bobby"; her grandchildren, Effie Swanson and husband, Dean of Penryn, Calif., Bill Balderson and wife, Rhonda, Larry Balderson and wife, Nittie, Danny Balderson, all of Richmond; 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

Walter Dennis Dawson, 68, of Tappahannock died Wednesday, August 15, 2001. He was a retired employee of Potomac Supply. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Brooks Dawson; his daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Tom Rogers of Warsaw, Faye and Wally Johnson of Stafford, Diane DeLorenzo of Jacksonville, Fla.; his brother and sister-in-law, Fletcher and Lois Dawson; and five grandchildren, Ryan Wainwright, Ulric, Kyle and Gavin Rogers and Lauren Palentino. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Interment Essex Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
