James M. Ballengee
Jul 30, 2002
Former Washington and Lee University Rector James McMurrow Ballengee, who played a key role in the school's decision in 1985 to become coeducational after 236 years as an all-male institution, died of respiratory failure Sunday at his Media, Pa., home. He was 79.
Mr. Ballengee, a Philadelphia lawyer, was retired chairman of Pennsylvania's Enterra Corp., an oil service conglomerate in Radnor, Pa.
He served as a W&L trustee from 1978 to 1990, including nine years as rector.
He led the board of trustees' exhaustive studies of the benefits and potential difficulties in admitting undergraduate women and, by doing so, leaving the nation's small pool of all-male institutions.
While W&L's School of Law went coeducational in 1972, the university's decision to follow suit was a controversial issue that could have polarized alumni had it not been for Mr. Ballengee's leadership, forthrightness and skill in resolving alumni concerns, said former W&L President John Wilson.
"It was his articulate nature and his capacity to convey to alumni and other interested parties that this was a trustees' study and would be objective. That showed through," Wilson said.
"I think that's why people acquiesced in the decision and said, 'OK, we'll see if you're right.' Later, most people agreed Jim and his trustee colleagues were right."
Mr. Balengee's wife, Jo McIlhattan Ballengee, said her husband was determined that having women in the school was "the thing to do - he was very updated on that. He felt like it was time for W&L to catch up. He worked very hard. They settled the issue on Bastille Day; I remember that."
The admission of women almost immediately led to dramatic increases in W&L's admissions applications, the academic scores of its students and to W&L's inclusion as one of the nation's top 15 liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine now ranks W&L the 13th best liberal arts college in the nation. Its law school is ranked the nation's 18th best legal program.
Mr. Ballengee also spearheaded W&L's 250th-anniversary celebration in 1999.
A Charleston, W.Va., native, he graduated first in his class from the W&L School of Law in 1948. He had been editor of the W&L Law Review and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa honorary academic society and the Order of the Coif legal honorary society. He received his undergraduate degree from Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, James M. Ballengee Jr. of Philadelphia; two daughters, Elizabeth Bowerman of Puriton, England, and Sarah Stewart of West Chester, Pa.; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Burial will be in the church columbarium.

Harvey G. Pope, 83, dies
Oct 02, 2002
Harvey G. Pope knew something about work.
He worked his way through the College of William and Mary and through law school at the University of Virginia.
So when he took a temporary job at Hancock Peanut Co. in his native Southampton County, it was only natural he made it permanent.
"He was supposed to stay long enough to help them build and organize an office," his wife, Anne, said. "Almost 60 years later, he cleaned out his desk."
Mr. Pope, who rose to president at Hancock Peanut Co. and later bought the firm from the Hancock family, died in his Courtland home Tuesday at age 83.
After 35 years with the company, the once-minority shareholder and his sons bought the company in 1980.
By 1990, Mr. Pope's sons bought his share of the business, and even after they sold a few years later, Mr. Pope stayed on as a consultant, keeping an office there until earlier this year.
A former mayor of Courtland, he was active in GOP politics throughout his life. Gov. John N. Dalton appointed him to Virginia's Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services in 1982, and he also served on the boards of several peanut industry groups.
In his semi-retirement, he was a founding partner of Mid-Atlantic Gin, a cotton-ginning concern, and was former board chairman of the Bank of Franklin, now BB&T.
Mr. Pope was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and had to have a leg amputated later that year. It slowed him, but it didn't stop him.
"He'd just put on his prosthesis and go and do," his wife said.
Mr. Pope was a past board member at Cypress Cove Country Club and Southampton Memorial Hospital.
"He was my golfing buddy and my buddy in everything else," said longtime friend Roger Drake. "If you never had Harvey Pope for a friend, you don't know what a friend is."
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, J. Mathews Pope, of Richmond, and Robert H. Pope, of Courtland; a daughter, Patricia P. Hartman, of Courtland; three sisters, Elizabeth P. Fowler, of Franklin, Barbara P. Burgess, of Courtland, and Gwennie P. Overby, of Branchville; three brothers, Linwood L. Pope, of Newsoms, James F. Pope, of Courtland, and William E. Pope, of Newport News; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Franklin Baptist Church in Franklin. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Courtland.
