CALLAHAM
Dr. William M. Callaham DDS, 76, of Midlothian, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002. He is survived by his beloved, Joanne Bradley (Jolie Dame); his son, William Timothy Callaham; Monica Bradley, Christine Stultz, Gwendolyn Jones and E.G. Bradley III; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many special and dear friends. Dr. Callaham attended Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the Highty Tightys, and graduated from Lynchburg College with a B.S. degree in 1945. After graduation he became a Medic in the Fleet Marines during WWII. Following his service to our country he attended MCV School of Dentistry. He graduated in June of 1953 and received his license to practice dentistry. He was a member and editor of Psi Omega and a member of Chi Beta Phi. He was also a member of the American Dental Association and the International Endodonic Dental Society. He opened his practice in November of 1953 in Crestview and later moved to Kensington and Three Chopt. He was Past Commander of the Richmond Power Squadron and also held memberships in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Virginia Yacht Club. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 12 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and where a celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Friday. COLEMAN
Maurice Houston Coleman, 58, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Richmond, Va., died peacefully on Sunday, August 4, 2002 in Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mable Houston and Hunter Coleman. Surviving are his sisters, Veronica Coleman, Connie F. Coleman, Corine Coleman Hubbard and Geneva L. Coleman; a brother, Charles M. Coleman of Washington, D.C.; nine nephews, four nieces, eight grandnieces, five grandnephews, two great-grandnieces; one sister-in-law, Viola S. Coleman; a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Springfield Baptist Church, Short Pump, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Advocate Charitable Foundation for the Adult Down Syndrome Center, Advocate Foundation, 205 W. CURTIS
Joel L. "Sarge" Curtis Sr., 72, homegoing to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 4, 2002. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Marie. He leaves to cherish his fond memories a very loving and devoted wife, Shirley A. (Matthews) Curtis; four sons and one stepson, Joel L. Curtis Jr., Mitchell Curtis, Michael Curtis, Terry Curtis and Michael Lomax; four daughters and two stepdaughters, Joyce Curtis, DeLisa Curtis, Paula Belfield, Carmelita Curtis, Cheryl Easter and Shara Lomax; one brother and his wife, Mitchell Curtis and Eva Mae Curtis; one uncle and his wife, Booker T. Curtis and Gladys Curtis; three aunts, Wessie Grice, Lena Byrd and Alease Byrd; one brother-in-law and his wife, George Matthews and Carmen Matthews; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends. Mr. Curtis retired from the U.S. Army, 440th Signal Battallion, and the Defense General Supply Center. He was a member of Thirty-First Street Baptist Church, the Usher Board, Growing in Faith Missionary Circle, the VFW Post No. 10654 and the North Airport Drive Civic Association. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Funeral services will be held at Thirty-First Street Baptist Church at 12:30 p.m. Friday, where his remains will rest for viewing at 11:30 a.m. Interment 3 p.m. Friday at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery.

FRIDENSTINE
Clyde Warren "Chet" Fridenstine, 75, of Callao, died August 6, 2002. Surviving are his wife, Helen Marie Fridenstine; daughter, Linda Dameron and husband, Steven; sons, Dan W. Fridenstine and Mark Ray Fridenstine and wife, Dorothy; eight grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral services 11 a.m. Friday at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood. Interment Northern Neck Memorial Gardens, Callao. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to Alzheimer's Foundation.

GARLAND
Departed this life August 4, 2002 Damien I. Garland of 1113 S. Lombardy St. He is survived by mother, Valencia E. Rogers; father, Dermone T. Garland Sr.; four sisters, one brother; grandmothers, Brenda H. Rogers and Arnette M. Garland; grandfathers, Kim Davis, Wayne Cox and devoted Alvin Young; stepgrandfather, Rudy White; Godgrandmother, Carleise Thompson; aunts and uncles, among them devoted, Mitchell Hudson; host of nieces, nephews and cousins and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday. Rev. Ronald Taylor officiating. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the funeral home 12:45 p.m. Friday.

GATES
Mrs. Dorothy Cook Gates, age 89, died August 7, 2002 in Farmville. The widow of Drewry A. Gates Sr. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Beverly G. Wilson of Crewe; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday At Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. Funeral services 11 a.m. Friday, Pisgah Baptist Church. Interment church cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Sharon Baptist Church, Rice.

GREEN
Michael Edward Green, 46, of Willoughby Spit, Norfolk, Va., died on July 12, 2002. He was born in Long Beach, Calif., raised in Maryland, and moved to Virginia as an adult. Mike was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Meckoll, also of Norfolk, and Col. and Mrs. Robert Green of Rockville, Md. He also leaves a sister, Nancy Hoffman; stepbrothers, stepsisters, nieces, nephews and many friends. While living in Norfolk, he served as vice-president of the Willoughby Civic League. He was a self-employed computer data base administrator. Prior to moving to Norfolk, Mr. Green was an eight-year resident of Richmond, Va. While attending Virginia Commonwealth University, he computerized their filing system. He was then employed by the Virginia Commonwealth Department of General Services, where he automated the Forensics Lab data base. He was also employed by Dataline, Inc. and traveled to Germany and Hawaii on their behalf to upgrade computer systems. Favorite pastimes included a love for the Chesapeake Bay as well as French and Civil War history. He will be dearly missed. HOOVER
Elizabeth G. Hoover, age 99, of Orlando, Fla., passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002. Born March 12, 1903 in Alexandria, La., Ms. Hoover graduated from Westhampton College, Richmond, Va., in 1922. She received her master's degree from Columbia University and continued her studies at the University of Chicago. Ms. Hoover was granted an honorary doctorate degree from Livingston University, Livingston, Ala. Ms. Hoover served on the faculty of Averett College, Danville, Va., Judson College, Marion, Ala. and the University of West Alabama, formerly Livingston University. A veteran of WWII, Ms. Hoover served in the U.S. Navy. She retired to Orlando in 1972 and became active in her community. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Orlando where she taught English literacy classes and worked in the thrift shop. Her volunteerism included being a pink lady at Holiday Hospital. The city of Orlando proclaimed March 13, 1993 as Elizabeth Hoover Day. Ms. Hoover was also a member of DAR and UDC. She had a kind and beautiful heart and was good to everyone she knew. Ms. Hoover is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton J. Hoover; her brothers, Dr. Hiter Hoover, Dr. Milton Josiah Hoover and Dr. William B. Hoover; and her sister, Nell Williams. Survivors include her sisters, Virginia Taylor or Orlando, Catherine Byrd Stone and husband, Fordyce Stone of Orlando and Sarah Jones and husband, Dr. George Jones of Richmond, Va.; sisters-in-law, Sallie Hoover of Norfolk, Va. and Audrey Hoover of Richmond, Va.; and eight nieces and nephews. Burial will be held in Richmond, Va.

Benjamin James Miller of Richmond departed this life Wednesday, August 7, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

MILLER
Wilma L. "Grandma" Miller, 74, of Mechanicsville, widow of Leslie G. Miller Jr., passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002. She is survived by her family, Anita and Wayne McAlister of Stafford, Al Miller of California, Wanda and Joe Gregory of King William and Tony Miller of Mechanicsville; a brother, Bobby King of Alabama; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Miller retired from Safeway after many years. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where a funeral service will be held 9 a.m. Friday. NORRIS
Kinsale native Walter Biscoe Norris, 83, died on August 6, 2002 at his home, Plainview, where he was born. He was the son of Marguerite Bailey Norris and John Holly Norris. Mr. Norris belonged to the Carmel UMC, the Kinsale Foundation and was a charter member of the Cople VFD and the Westmoreland Ruritans. The farmer-turned-rural carrier generously shared his garden produce. In retirement, he tallied oyster shells for the Potomac River Commission and carried the Westmoreland News. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Florence Douglas Norris; a sister, Betty Arnest; and his sons, Petie and Doug Norris. Visitation will be held at Plainview Farm on Thursday, August 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Carmel UMC. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cople VFD's rescue boat fund, P.O. Box 51, Kinsale, Va. 22488 or the Westmoreland Ruritan, P.O. Box 936, Montross, Va. 22520.

PAYNE
Grace Elizabeth (Dottie) Payne, age 80, passed away August 6, 2002. She is survived by her children, Ernest R. Baker, L. Bruce Baker, William H. Baker and Debra C. Berman and their families. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Wayne Baker; and is also survived by his family. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

PHILLIPS
Mrs. Elaine "Pat" Phillips, age 84, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Monday evening, August 5, 2002. She has been a resident of Boynton Beach since 1985, coming from Cleveland, Ohio. Mrs. Phillips had been a longtime member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and was a literacy tutor at the Boynton Beach Library. She also was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1924 in Willoughby, Ohio. Mrs. Phillips is predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Andy Phillips. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Patricia Phillips of Westlake, Ohio and Linda Phillips along with her fiance, Joe DeFazio of Richmond, Va.; one nephew, William Penn (Lyn) of Mayfield Heights, Ohio and lifelong friends, Stanley and Jeanne Benjamin. She is also the beloved aunt of the Youdath and Lefelholcz families. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 9, 2002 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Boynton Beach, Fla. A second Memorial Service will be held at the Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, Ohio at a later date. Those who wish may make contributions to the American Lung Association, 2701 N. Australian Ave., West Palm Beach, Fla. 33407 or to your local library.

POND
Ruth Fraughnaugh Pond, 80, a resident of Surry County and retired school teacher, died Wednesday, August 7, 2002 in UPMC St. Margaret Memorial Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. She was born in Caroline County, Virginia. Mrs. Pond is the daughter of the late Algernon and Hattie Sorrell Fraughnaugh. Mrs. Pond was highly involved in her church, Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, serving throughout the years in many roles. She was an elementary school teacher in both the Surry County and Hopewell City School system. In the community, Mrs. Pond was a very active member in both the APVA and the Surry County Garden Club. Mrs. Pond was married to the late Lyle Hawkins Pond and is survived by three children, her son, John Al Pond and wife, Kathi of Atlanta, Ga.; her daughter, Susan Pond Gilbert and husband, Mallory of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and her son, David, Lyle Pond and wife, Page of Charlotte, N.C. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Robert, Wesley, Stewart, Emmy, Ryland and Virginia. The funeral service will be conducted at Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Wakefield on Saturday, August 10, 2002, at 4 p.m. Rev. Don Chapman and Rev. Dr. Jim Becker will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence on Rocky Hock Road, Wakefield. Memorial donations may be made to Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, c/o J.C. Whitmore Jr., 2847 White Marsh Road, Wakefield, Va. 23888 or to a charity of your choice. Purviance Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
