Jean Marie Cullather rite today
Jul 30, 2003
In 1991, Jean Marie Tucker Cullather and her husband received news that broke their hearts.
Their son, John Christopher "Chris" Cullather, had multiple brain tumors that would prove fatal.
After Chris died in 1992 at age 21, the Cullathers transformed their sorrow into a springboard to create hope for other families living with brain tumors.
They were instrumental in founding the Brain Tumor Research Fund at Medical College of Virginia and in organizing the Chris Cullather Classic, a Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball game designated each year for the past 10 years to raise funds for brain-tumor research.
Mrs. Cullather, who had been ill with brain cancer, died Sunday at her Richmond home.
Her vision of helping others fight against and live with brain cancer will continue through the establishment of the Cullather Cancer Fund.
Survivors include her husband of 37 years, John C. "Jack" Cullather; two daughters, Maribeth Carr and Maureen Stepanian, both of Richmond; a sister, Toni Eunice of Deltaville; a brother, Jim Tucker of Urbanna; and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Theodore Roy Turner service is today
Sep 30, 2002
A graveside service for retired art professor Theodore Roy Turner, will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens in Albemarle County.
Mr. Turner, whose works have been exhibited at museums and schools all over the East Coast and who taught fine arts at the University of Virginia for more than three decades, died Thursday. He was 80.
Mr. Turner saw teaching as his duty "to educate the public" about art but told The Times-Dispatch in 1964: "The great artist doesn't go to school. He learns in spite of school."
Mr. Turner often searched for inspiration while rumbling across the countryside on his motorcycle.
He had a special frame mounted to his bike to carry his painting supplies.
In addition to oils and watercolors, he was known for his bold wood block prints.
A Louisa County native, Mr. Turner earned a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. He served three years in the Navy. His first teaching post was at Dartmouth College. In 1952, he took a post at U.Va.
He taught a wide variety of classes, including printmaking, watercolors, art history and photography. He retired in 1985.
His work has been shown in exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts, New York University, the College of William and Mary, the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Print Club and at U.Va.
Mr. Turner's work is also in the collections of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, U.Va., the New York Public Library, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and several other educational institutions.
Over the span of his career, Mr. Turner was honored with several distinctions for his oil and watercolor work.
He was the widower of Sarah "Sally" Turner.
Survivors include three daughters, Suzanna Turner of Palmyra, Vicki Morgan of McLean and Jane Quinn of Virginia Beach; and seven grandchildren.
