James David Taylor
Dec 10, 2001
James David Taylor, founder and retired chairman of Taylor-Ramsey Corp., died Friday in Lynchburg. Mr. Taylor, a longtime board member of educational, financial and cultural institutions in the area, was 81.
The Lynchburg native founded Taylor Lumber Co. in 1954 after nearly 10 years of working in the lumber industries of Virginia and North Carolina, said George Ramsey, his brother-in-law and partner who joined the company a year later.
In the late 1950s, the company changed its name to Taylor-Ramsey.
"It was a gradual success," Ramsey said. "He had the best work ethic of anyone I know. Even in his philanthropy, he worked very hard behind the scenes and very seldom stepped forward for the recognition."
In the early 1990s, he stepped down as president and retired as chairman of the board in 1997.
Although his company kept him busy, he still had time to indulge in one of his greatest passions, flying.
"The company bought its first plane in 1961 at his direction," Ramsey said. "He got the chance to continue flying until he was about 65. He loved being a pilot."
An Army Air Forces B-17 pilot during World War II, he was shot down over Germany and was captured as a POW. He later earned the Distinguished Flying Cross in addition to other decorations.
In 1970, Mr. Taylor was among a group of businessmen who founded Jefferson National Bank in Lynchburg, which was later sold to Virginia National Bank. He continued to serve on the Lynchburg Board of Virginia National and its successor, Sovran Bank, throughout the 1980s.
An active member of the Virginia Forestry Association, he was also a board member of James River Day School and the former Seven Hills School.
The Eleanor J. and James D. Taylor Media Center at James River School was named in honor of Mr. Taylor and his wife.
At the time of his death he was a board member for the Academy of Music of Lynchburg.
In addition to his wife, Eleanor Jordan Taylor, survivors include a son, Richard Edwards Taylor of Baltimore; a daughter, Anne Wynne Taylor of Washington; and a sister, Harriet Taylor Ramsey, and a brother, Robert Baird Taylor, both of Lynchburg.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg. Burial will be private.
