Lewis G. Miles
Lewis Gale Miles, 82, of 6260 Greensboro Road, Ridgeway, died Monday, June 20, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Franklin County on March 24, 1923, to Shannon Via Miles and Lizzie Lee Miles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret M. Crawford and Alice M. Wood; and a brother, Herbert Miles.
He served with the Army 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, retired from DuPont as a mechanic with 31 years of service, and he attended the First Baptist Church of Ridgeway.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor S. Miles of the home; a daughter, Rita M. Loving of Roanoke; a stepdaughter, Wilma S. Wimbish of Gainesville, Ga.; one son, Shannon Gale Miles of South Boston; a sister, Mildred M. Mountcastle of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Gary Edwards officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

John W. Muse III
John Willie Muse III, 28, of 2645 Calvary Road, Penhook, died Friday, June 17, 2005, of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident in Franklin County.
He was born in Franklin County on Dec. 6, 1976, and was the son of John Willie Muse Jr. of Rocky Mount and Susie James Muse of Penhook.
He graduated from Norfolk State College, was employed at M & W Manufacturing in Rocky Mount, and he was a member of the Greater Mt. Parrish Baptist Church at Penhook.
In addition to his parents, surviving are his wife, Sarita Walker Muse of the home; three sons, Shamaad Muse, Armahn Muse and Simeon W. Muse, all of the home; a sister, Kathy Walker of Martinsville; one brother, Robb Wainwright of Rocky Mount; and other relatives.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Greater Mt. Parrish Baptist Church with Dr. Samuel Easley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Erma J. Rutter
Erma Jean Rutter, 56, of 224 Shumate Drive, Collinsville, died Monday, June 20, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born on Nov. 22, 1948, in the Panama Canal, to James Leon Greer and Erma O. McPeak. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Richard Rutter on April 30, 2005; and a brother, Junior Greer.
She graduated from Bassett High School in 1966, worked as an assistant manager at Wilco for 15 years, and retired from Market Square. She was a member of Turning Point Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Geraldine Caldwell of Collinsville; one grandchild; and one niece.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Community Funeral Services chapel in Ridgeway. The Rev. Tom Wilson will officiate.
Friends will be received at the funeral home for one hour before the funeral Wednesday. Burial will be in the McPeak family cemetery in Dugspur at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Donald L. Shively
Donald Lee "Duck" Shively, 56, of Bassett, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Henry County, and was the son of Madeline Koger Shively of Bassett and Dewey Daniel Shively. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Daniel Shively.
He served in the Army during the Vietname War.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter, Melissa R. Shively of Bassett; two sisters, Bernice Setliff of Henry and Rebecca Wright of Spencer; and a brother, Paul R. Shively of Bassett.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Elder Lewis Vass will officiate. Burial will follow in the Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at 173 Palm Drive, Bassett.

Lillian H. Wimbish
The funeral for Lillian Hancock Wimbish, 84, of Bassett, who died June 17, 2005, was held Monday at Blackberry Baptist Church with Dr. G.H. Vaughan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dale Hancock, Kenny Hancock, Tim Hancock, Eddie Hancock, Jason Ray and Ronnie Saunders.
Collins Funeral Services in Bassett was in charge of arrangements.

Calvin Dobbins Sr.
Calvin Jesse Dobbins Sr. of 3109 Carver Road, Martinsville, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Services, Martinsville.

Franklin R. Harris
The funeral for Franklin Roosevelt Harris, 72, of 3786 Hobson road, Axton, who died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Community Chapel in Ridgeway. The Revs. John Snider and Willie Conner will officiate. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery at Ridgeway.
The family will receive friends at Community Funeral Services from 6-7 p.m. today.
Harris was born Sept. 10, 1933, a son of the late Guy Harris and Susie Jackson Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Dawn Harris; two sisters, Eulelene Anderson and Nannie Sheppard; and a brother, Bascun Harris.
Harris retired from W.M. Bassett Furniture Co. after 35 years of service, and he attended Rich Acres Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel S. Harris of Martinsville; two daughters, Kathy Harris Pruitt of Axton and Elizabeth Harris of Martinsville; two sisters, Nolavon O'Quinn of Saltville, Rosie Taylor of Abington; four brothers, Billy Harris of Saltville, John Harris of Axton, Hugh Harris of Abington and Curtis Harris of Saltville; and three grandchildren.

Earl P. Helms
Earl P. Helms, 78, of 5900 Virginia Ave., Bassett, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Born Aug. 13, 1927, in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Virgil E. Helms and Lou Ora Lovell Helms. His wife, Lydia Frances Bousman Helms died March 29, 2004.
He had worked at American Furniture Co. for 21 years and Stanley Furniture Co. for 20 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bassett.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Helms and Charles L. Helms, both of Bassett; a sister, Edith H. Haynes of Bassett; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Bassett with the Rev. Lew Bennett and Elder Larry Hollandsworth officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services from 6-8 p.m. today.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bassett Building Fund, P.O. Box 557, Bassett, Va. 24055.
Collins Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.
