DOWNING
Henry H. Downing Sr., 88, of Richmond, died April 23, 2001. His son, Henry Jr., a local realtor, survives him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Shelton, in 1994. A son of the late S. Byrne Downing Sr. and Kathleen Cook Downing, he spent his early life in Front Royal at Bel Air, the old family home. He was an honors graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, was Captain of his company in the Corps of Cadets, and was a member of O.D.K In Richmond after college, he was associated with the Travelers Insurance Co. as a field supervisor. He was appointed an officer in the Navy in WWII, assigned to Dive Bombing Squadron No.16 attached to the Carrier Lexington No.2, fighting in the Pacific. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Front Royal where he founded Downing Insurance, Inc., an independent insurance agency representing numerous companies. Appointed Postmaster in 1962, he spent about 12 years in that position as supervisor of 25-30 employees. In 1992, he and his wife returned to Richmond. He was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., on Thursday, April 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted in the family plot in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal, Va., on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m.

GORDON
Milton E. "Jeep" Gordon, 73, of Glen Allen, passed away April 23, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Burton Gordon. He is survived by a sister, Mildred G. Lail; many nieces and nephews; and a devoted friend, Haywood Chewning. He was an employee of Blue Cross, Blue Shield for 37 years. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., open visitation on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Building Fund, 11220 Nuckols Rd., Glen Allen, Va. 23059.

GREGORY
Charles E. "Chuck" Gregory, 51, long time resident of Richmond, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 20, 2001. Chuck worked for almost thirty years as a Real Estate Broker in the Richmond area with ReMax Commonwealth/Brooks and Innes Realtors. He is survived by two brothers, Robert H. Gregory of Gainesville, Fla. and James B. Gregory Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; his former wife, Ann Brown Cockrell Gregory; three stepchildren and two nieces and two nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his father, James B. Gregory Sr. and mother, Helen H. Gregory. A debilitating back injury had limited Chuck's activities for more than a year. Chuck was born in Raleigh, N.C. and spent his early years in Norfolk, Va. and moved to Richmond with his family in 1958. He attended local schools and graduated from Campbell College in Buis Creek, N.C. Chuck was active in many civic and charitable organizations, including the American Cancer Society. He will long be remembered by his many friends and business associates for his sense of humor and willingness to help others whenever he could. Chuck was a communicant of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, an active member of the Commonwealth Club and an avid hunter and fisherman. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church or the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Graveside services will be held at Hollywood Cemetery at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001.

GRIZZARD
Mr. Richard Arlington Grizzard, 88, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Margaret M. Grizzard; son and daughter-in-law, the Reverend R. Larry and Frances B. Grizzard of Emporia; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Ronnie Burge of Dolphin; two granddaughters, Barbara and Beverly Burge; and two sisters, Annie Edwards of Richmond and Mildred Price of Emporia. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (tonight) at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001 at Zion Baptist Church, Skippers, Va., with interment to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Rd., Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060.

HALL
Virginia S. Hall, of Lottsburg, Va., formerly of Richmond, widow of Samuel A. Hall Jr., passed away Monday, April 23, 2001. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel A. Hall III and Pamela A. Hall of Lottsburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Samuel A. Hall IV of Richmond and Russell Bryant Hall of Roanoke, Va; two brothers, William S. Scott and Frederick P. Scott, both of Richmond. The family will recieve friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wedensday at the Laburnum Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Callao Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 82, Callao, Va., 22435.

HENLEY
Mrs. Alice B. Henley of Powhatan County departed this life, Tuesday, April 24, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

HESTER
Jannie Ruth Hester, 76, of Mineral, Va., died April 22, 2001. She was a retired bank teller. Survived by one sister, Gladys M. Laager of Calumet, Minn.; one brother, Willard Hester of Orange, Va.; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral service Thursday, April 26, 2:30 p.m., at Woodward Funeral Home Chapel, Louisa. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

HULIN
Latrice Hulin (Pinkie), 17, of Henrico County went to be with the Lord, Sunday, April 22, 2001. She is survived by her mother, Kathy Tyler; her father, Larry McNair; also her stepfather, Russell Tyler; her brothers, Eric, Frank, Ladel and Donnel; her sister, Sharelle; her maternal grandmother, Sarah Wade; paternal grandmother, Hannah McNair; also a host of aunts and uncles and devoted friends. She was an honor roll student at Varina High School and a member of the S.O.D.A. program, Vice President of the Junior Class, Treasurer of Keyettes, National Honor Society and the Spanish Club at the school. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Thursday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

JACKSON
Departed this life April 21, 2001, Charles Junior (Fat Charles) Jackson. He leaves to cherish his memories devoted companion, Deborah Robinson; son, Damon Robinson; loving mother, Josephine Jackson; brother, Albert Larry; sisters, Evelyn Dobson and Barbara Thacker; a devoted nephew, William (Al) Larry-Thacker; two aunts, Pauline Jackson and Clara Roane; brother-in-law, Stuart Thacker; sister-in-law; Joan Larry; a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave., where funeral services will be conducted Thursday, 1 p.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

JOHNSON
Departed this life April 24, 2001, Mr. Albert R. Johnson, of 815 N. 35th St., apt. 101, and formerly of 1825 N. 29th St. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th Street. Funeral notice later.

JONES
Mrs. Thomas David Jones Jr., 85, of 5500 Grove Avenue, passed away April 22, 2001. She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., to John and Ruth Potts Riis. Mrs. Jones was the wife of the late Thomas D. Jones Jr., the former Commisioner of Banking for the state of Virginia and was the granddaughter of Jacob A. Riis, a well known author and social reformer in the early 1900's. Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and retired from the Pamunkey Regional Library in Havover Courthouse. She was a life long member of Second Presbyterian Church and a member of the Hanover Womens Club. Surviving are her children, Thomas David Jones III of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Mrs. Waverly G. King of the city; four grandchildren, Thomas Kendall King, Elisabeth Randall King, Kathryn Taylor Jones and Margaret Riis Jones; a sister, Mrs. James T. Moore Jr. of the city; 14 nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Loretta Taylor. Mrs. Jones' family will receive friends and family at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Second Presbyterian Church by Reverend O. Benjamin Sparks officiating. Memorials may be made to Sanctuary and Chapel Restoration Fund at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North 5th St., Richmond, VA 23219 or to the John Riis Endowment at V.C.U., Box 842019, Richmond, VA 23284.

KELSAW
Mae Pearl Kelsaw entered into eternal rest April 22, 2001, She was preceded by her son, Philip. She leaves to cherish her memories five sons, Lloyd, Louis, Ricky, Keith and Robert Kelsaw; 13 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren; sister, Mattie Mills of Richmond, sister-in-law, Margaret Kelsaw of Eastern Shore, Md.; devoted niece, Jean Henderson of Adelphia, Md.; several daughters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; one devoted friend, Ernest Houston. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave., where the family will receive friends on Thursday evening 6 to 7 p.m. Graveside services private.

KILTZ
Mrs. Lillian G. Turner Kiltz (Gay), 91, of Richmond, departed this life Monday, April 23, 2001. She was the widow of Burton F. Kiltz and was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Lottie M. Turner and Mr. Herbert Turner; also her sister, Edna M. Dillon. She is survived by her beloved nephew, John T. Draper Jr. and his wife, Margaret and their children, Michael, Debra and Timothy Draper and Carole Adams; several great-nieces and nephews. Also by her niece, Shirley D. Chapman and her children. Mrs. Kiltz was retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company in 1975 after 47 years of service and was a former member of Northside Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Wednesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, 11 a.m., at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

LASSITER
Departed this life April 20, 2001, Mrs. Lelia B. Lassiter of 1511 Greenville Ave. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John H. Lassiter Sr. She is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Richardson and Lelia M. Baxter; two sons, John H. Jr. and David Lassiter Sr.; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one brother, David Deberry; several nieces, nephews and cousins; three daughters-in-law, Lois, Tallulah and Louise Lassiter; one son-in-law, James Baxter; two sisters-in-law, Mary Collins and Alease Deberry; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Thursday, 12 noon, at Church of God, 1601 N. 21st St., Richmond, Va., where remains will lie in state one hour prior funeral time, Rev. Irnishel Drew (pastor) officiating. Interment Church of God Cemetery in Boykins, Va. Family and friends assemble at the church 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

LYTHGOE
George R. Lythgoe, 80, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on April 24, 2001. He is survived by his dear friend, Ruby N. King; sister, Hattie L. Gwinn of Norfolk; nephews, Hank and Bill Lythgoe of Richmond. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Morrissett Funeral Home 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Lythgoe was a retiree of E.I. DuPont and member of Manchester Gang, Chesterfield Lodge 161 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 yrs., the Scottish Rite, ACCA Temple Shrine, Antique & Classic Car Club of ACCA Temple, and the Manchester Moose Lodge. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 9217, Richmond, VA 23227

MASON
Shelley J. Mason, 26, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2001. She is survived by her mother and father, Betty and Grayson Martin; two sisters, Rhonda Jenkins of Virginia Beach and Dee Dee Williams; an aunt, Helen Morris; two nephews, Brandon and Gabriel; two nieces, Megan and Laura; grandmothers, Mary Sanford and Edna Mason; and numerous friends. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral notice later.

MCAFEE
John McAfee Sr., 73, of the 500 block of San Marcos Court, passed away Monday, April 23, 2001. Mr. McAfee was born in Pittsburgh, PA, of the late John McAfee and the late Mrs. Gertrude Mary O'Kane McAfee. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the US Army for 25 years, retiring in 1987. He was also a successful businessman, who started and owned several businesses and was a volunteer for many humanitarian causes. He was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Richmond, VA. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Brennan McAfee; a daughter, Mary Heather Yarow, her husband, Richard Scott Yarow, of Suffolk, VA; two sons, John McAfee Jr. of Richmond, VA and Thomas Paul McAfee, and his wife, Jacquelyn Branch McAfee of Ellicott City, MD; eight grandchildren and one great granchild. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Richmond VA by the Rev. Dr. James Roseman. Entombment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. The Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

MONCURE
John Moncure, founder and retired president of Moncure Oil Corporation, died Monday, April 23, 2001 at the age of 82. Prior to founding Moncure Oil Corporation in 1959, Mr. Moncure ran a poultry business from "Picquenocque", the family home in Henrico County. A veteran of World War II, he graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served in the Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant stationed in England working as a navigator on a B-17 bomber. Prior to entering the Army Air Corps, he was a member of the Virginia National Guard. Mr. Moncure was educated at McGuire School, Episcopal High School, and the University of Virginia. He attended All Saints Episcopal Church. Mr. Moncure is survived by his wife of 52 years, Douglas Parker Moncure; three daughters, Margaret Moncure Conway of Fredericksburg, Ann Moncure- Williams and Elizabeth Moncure Varland, both of Richmond; three sons, Alexander Parker Moncure of New Canaan, Connecticut, John Moncure Jr. and Thomas Rutherfoord Moncure, both of Richmond; and thirteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Parker Moncure Vaden. He is also survived by a brother, T. Rutherfoord Moncure, and a sister, Patty Moncure Drewry, both of Richmond. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the McGuire School Foundation, P.O. Box 7145, Richmond, Virginia 23221 or to the Mary Parker Moncure Vaden Endowment for Citizenship and the Arts, Collegiate School, North Mooreland Road, Richmond, Virginia 23229.

MONROE
Elsie Miller Monroe, formerly of Hyattsville, Md., departed this life on April 22, 2001. She was predeceased by her husband, William Monroe; and her parents, Floyd T. and Kiziah J. Miller. Survived by five aunts, Blanche J. Calvin, Mary J. James, Lucille Washington, Essie Norrell and Vera S. Miller; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave., where funeral services will be held Thursday 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Wallace J. Cook officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
