RUBY
Electa Culliton Snead Ruby, 94, of Victoria, Va., and who was currently residing with her granddaughter, Mrs. Brenda Allard of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away July 21, 2002 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mrs. Ruby was the daughter of the late William Francis and Cora Clarke Culliton. She retired from the Giant Open Air Market in Portsmouth, Va., where she was also a former native for over 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Willie C. Snead Sr. and Charles E. Ruby Jr.; four brothers, Gordon, Taylor, Austin and Calvin Culliton; one sister, Fannie Carey; a daughter, Victoria Perry; and a son, Jimmie Snead. She leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Willie C. Snead Jr. of Lunenburg, Va.; a daughter, Edith S. King of Victoria, Va.; two sisters, Joe C. Brett and Doris Moore of Crewe, Va.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 24, 11 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Victoria Fire and Rescue Squad. Staples Funeral Home, Victoria, in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Ruby will be sadly missed by many who knew and loved her.

SHULTS
Linda Jean Shults, age 52, of Richmond, died July 19, 2002. Survivors include one brother, William H. Shults; three nieces, Michele L. Shults, Destiny Shults and Diamond Shults; two nephews, Jason K. Shults and Dameon Shults; one sister-in-law, Jennifer Varley; and loving extended family. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held 12 noon Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment Mount Calvary Cemetery.

SPRUILL
William D. Spruill, 91, of Dendron, Va., died Thursday, July 18, 2002 in the Waverly Health Care. He was a native of Dendron, Va., the son of the late Joseph C. and Idella Avery Spruill. He was a retired employee for the Windsor Supply Company and a member of the Dendron United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Edythe B. Spruill; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen S. Watko and husband, "A.J."; two sons and daughters-in-law, William D. Spruill Jr. and wife, Beverly of Mechanicsville, David B. Spruill and wife, Janet of Chesterfield; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, Monday, July 22, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, with the Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will be in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to the Dendron United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 163, Dendron, Va. 23839.

Ruth J. Steele of Richmond entered eternal rest on July 17, 2002. Cherishing her memory are her daughters, Patricia and Sandra; her son, Marvyn; and daughter-in-law, Sherida; her grandchildren, Samuel, Joseph, Dawn, Erin, Darian, and Tanisha; her great-grandchildren, Brittany, Ramon, Joseph, and Jada; her brother, Leslie James Sr.; a host of nieces, among them one devoted, Gloria (Pennie) Goodman; nephews, and cousins, one sister-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Monday, 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., Dr. Robert L. Taylor officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

STONE-THOMAS
Dorothy Stone-Thomas passed away after a brief illness Saturday, July 20, 2002. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George E. Stone Jr. She is survived by her husband, Joseph C. Thomas; her son, George E. (Jerry) Stone III; a niece, Sandra C. Bottoms; three nephews, Norman Ernest Bottoms, William R. Crew, and David I. Richardson; and many loving family and friends. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. Dorothy was a member of Skipwith Baptist Church and a former volunteer at Henrico Doctors' Hospital. The family requests that donations be made to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad. THOMPSON
Cynthia Diane (Mallow) Thompson, 34, of Richmond, died on Saturday, July 20, 2002. She was the beloved wife of William Scott Thompson; loving mother of Mary Elizabeth Thompson; cherished daughter of Nancy Jane (Kile) and Brenard T. Howery Sr. (stepfather), and their daughter, Tiffany Marie, Delbert Earl and Robin A. Mallow (stepmother); sister of Mason Earl Mallow; granddaughter of the late Ervin and Mary Kile and Mason and Dovie Mallow. She is also survived by numerous nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Friends may call at the Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main St., Fairfax, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 22, where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Interment to follow in Great Falls. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Washington, D.C. Children's Hospital, who have over the years provided outstanding comfort and care to Cindy. TWEEDIE
Miss Margaret Tweedie, 87, of Richmond, died July 20, 2002. She was a retired employee of Crippled Children's Hospital. She is survived by her brother, Robert J. Tweedie of Richmond; also four nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen T. Clarke. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Graveside will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

WHITESCARVER
Col. Kenneth T. Whitescarver, age 82, died Friday, July 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Fork Union military Academy Chapel with Chaplain Ed Nicholson officiating. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Fork Union military Academy, P.O. Carlton Williams Sr., 64, of Richmond, departed this life July 16, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Mary Williams; a brother, Haywood Williams. He is survived by a devoted friend, Mary Hicks; his children, Marcella Jones, Miranda "Colleen" Asby, Andrea Williams, Alsia Ford and Carlton Williams Jr.; two sisters, Rose Plummer and Barbara Demory; two brothers, Kermit Williams Jr. and Jerry Williams; in-laws, Martha Williams, Mrs. Williams of New York, Charles Plummer and Cody Demory; aunts, Clara "Baby" Hill, Viola Winston, Dorothy Jackson and Hazel Payton; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Richard Earl Williams, age 80 of Richmond, died Saturday, July 20, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy L. Williams; three daughters, Carrol Sillmon and husband, Robert Sillmon; Barbara Anne Gammon and Joyce L. Thomas; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Williams of California. Mr. Williams was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the 111th Field Artillery 29th Division and fought at Normandy; also a retired welder for the Weldall Co. Mabel W. Andrews, 84, of Sandston, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 4, 2002. She was the widow of Elbert E. Andrews, and is survived by her sister, Marguerite Herndon; her brothers, Erwin, Joseph, Clifford, and Lewis Wootton. Mrs. Andrews was a retiree of DuPont, a member and past matron of Areme Chapter #17, Order of the Eastern Star, and member of New Bridge Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. BOYNTON
Dr. Gerald W. Boynton, age 64, of Mechanicsville, passed away on August 3, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. He was a native of Tennessee and was the son of the late Gerald Willis and Evelyn Claire Boynton. He graduated from Columbia Union College, and received a Masters of Social Work from the University of Tennessee at Nashville, and a Doctor of Education from the University of Georgia. He served on the faculty of the University of Georgia, West Virginia University, and the University of Houston, and retired as a supervising psychologist for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice. He was a faithful member of the Meadowbridge Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and served as Sabbath School teacher for many years for the "Pluggers" class. He also was a member of the Hanover Ruritan Club, and the Metropolitan Lodge #11, AF&AM, and Scottish Rite. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children, Andrew, Katherine, and Rachel, of Mechanicsville; daughters, Colleen Colegrove and Rebecca Baddeley; sons-in-law, Dr. Eric Colegrove, and Thomas Baddeley; grandchildren, Thomas and Jessica Baddeley, and Evan and Brianna Colegrove, all of Georgia; and father-in-law, Willard S. Gilley, of Williamsburg, Va. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at the Meadowbridge Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Virginia Swift Burgess, 85, of Burgess, died August 4, 2002. She was a member of Fairport Baptist Church, United Daughters of the Confederacy and Northumberland Co. Historical Society. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William L. and Virginia H. Burgess, Reedville; daughter and son-in-law, Frances B. and Warren R. Keyser, Burgess; brother, Jeter R. Swift, Reedville; grandchildren, Phillip Keyser, Gregory Keyser, Anita Bost, W. Ashley Burgess and Dare Burgess. Funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairport Baptist Church, Fairport. CALISCH
Elliott W. (Bud) Calisch, age 79, died August 4, 2002 at Lucy Corr Nursing Home in Chesterfield County, Va. He was born on April 18, 1923 in Richmond, Va. the son of Edith Lindeman and Abraham Woolner Calisch. After serving in the 8th Air Force during World War II, he graduated from the University of Richmond in 1949. He worked for Friedman-Marks and Jefferson Clothing Company for over 20 years before retiring from the Palm Beach Clothing Company. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of Temple Beth Ahabah and was an avid U of R (Spider) fan. A devoted father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Page D. Calisch of Richmond; three sons, Dabney Calisch and his wife, Linda of Naples, Fla., Nelson Calisch and his wife, Kathleen of Richmond, and Lance Calische and his wife, Charlene of Olympia, Wash.; one daughter, Melissa Calisch Drake and her husband, Evans; six grandchildren, Elliott Calisch, Avery Drake, Lawton Drake, Griffin Drake, Lindsay Calisch-Rogers, and Calum Calisch-Rogers. He is also survived by his two sisters, Frances Rothenberg and her husband, Bill, and Nikki Fairman, all of Richmond. The family will receive friends at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 7. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Richmond's Athletic Club.

CANNON
Everett Walton Cannon of Ashland, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, quietly passed away August 3, 2002 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Bumpass Cannon; his daughter, Linda Cannon Porter and her husband, Robert Miller Porter; two grandchildren, Michael Brandon Porter and his wife, Kristen Dyke Porter, and Melissa Brooke Porter; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Chase Porter and Chloe Elizabeth Porter; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Edward Cannon Sr. He also leaves behind his friend Hector, the cat. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 9 p.m. Monday. Funeral services Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Independence Christian Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad, Independence Christian Church, or a charity of your choice. Mr. Cannon had been a member of the Ashland Rescue Squad, and honored with a Life Membership, and had been a member of the Independence Ruritan Club, and was a member and a deacon of Independence Christian Church.

CLIBORNE
Edith Daniel Cliborne, 88, died August 3, 2002 at Britthaven in Nags Head. She was born in Brunswick County, Va., and resided in Blackstone, Va. prior to her retirement to Kill Devil Hills, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband, Cabell; and sisters, Ann and Ella Lee. She is survived by her son, Howard and wife, Helen of Nags Head; grandchildren, Kevin and wife, Travers, Catherine and husband, George; as well as great-grandchildren, Elliott, Sarah, Patrick, and Davis, all of Richmond, Va. Her sister, Betty Payne of Virginia Beach, Va.; and brother, Lewis Daniel of Powhatan, Va.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Edith had many friends from her years of caring and giving to others. Her gift of love will be remembered by all. She was a long standing member of the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church and Temple 3 of the Pythian Sisters in Norfolk, Va. She previously had been a member of the Temple in Blackstone, and had served on numerous state association committees, rising to be the Grand Chief of the Virginia Pythian Sisters before her retirement. Services will be held August 6, 2002 at the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, or St. Andrews-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head.
